The official status of the much-loved animal has been changed from "endangered" to "vulnerable" because of a population rebound in China.
The change was announced as part of an update to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List.
But the update also brought bad news. The eastern gorilla, the world's largest primate, is now endangered.
Efforts by China, which claims the giant panda as its national animal, have brought its numbers back from the brink. The latest estimates show a population of 1,864 adults.
soon we can eat that delicious panda meat

Oh yeah, I forgot, there's no good news because everything is fucked forever.
Also how the hell is 1800 pandas not engadered levels
I would assume it's a function of what population capacity their natural habitat can sustain as well as how large their natural habitat currently is compared to historical levels
If pandas live in bamboo forests and bamboo forests are relatively a naturally rare habitat then there you go

A species is considered endangered if it's at risk of becoming extinct in all or a significant amount of its range. 1800 animals is enough for a sustainable population if the areas are preserved correctly. Conversely the gorillas that have just been classed as endangered number around 5000, but are probably considered endangered because unsustainable hunting and habitat loss is making them decline and putting them at risk of extinction.
Oh yeah population trends would be a big part of it too huh
