So it's going to be a while before I have enough saved up to buy a freighter but let me ask: How do you save multiple ships on a freighter, instead of just trading ships? Can you only save multiple ships by finding crashed ships?
So, you can only get another ship while on your own freighter. They land like they do on space stations, and when you go into the compare options, you are given 3 options at the bottom instead of just two: Buy it outright and add it to your collection, swap ships for the difference in price, and cancel. It will tell you the cost of the ship in that ship's "box". It also helps to see what the difference is when trading in one ship for another, so you can see the approximate worth of different ships and their slots, etc.
Cool, that's something that was never explained back when they initially added freighters.
If you prefer to farm crashed ships, use your freighter to buy some cheap shuttle, then go trade that for a crashed ship. Or land it at a trading post and wait for interesting ships, etc...

Yeah, and right after purchasing a ship from the freighter, take it out for a test drive to make sure the game doesn't undo your purchase (which it claims it will do if you board your original ship first and exit the freighter). Then, you can switch to whichever ship you want, and either trade new ships on stations, trading posts, etc or find crashed ships as normal.
Shuttles that land on Freighters rarely go over 1 million units in price, so that's not a bad mode of starting out, though it's better to go farm crashed ships if you're going to go this path, since that means their trade-in value is very much less. So, Shuttle, farm crashed ships up to a reasonable number of slots, then go buy up to even better ships via trade-in is a viable method. It's even better to do this with a secondary ship so that if you ever have issues with all the broken slots in crashed ships, you can go back to a working ship.

I don't know why it is, but I couldn't resist the allure of permadeath. So new save away! I'm diving into base construction right away this time around. My starting planet was a snow covered one, fairly relaxed, nothing particularly interesting about it.
The first system I jumped to had a desert planet that I found tremendously appealing for some reason. It's low on thamium, but the sentinels are chill and the landscape is great. There are tons of deep ravines that I look forward to flying around in once I have a nimble ship again.
Speaking of nimble ships, after a couple of hours I decided to claim my preorder ship. A few minutes after plopping a warp cell in, I flew over a 31 slot A class ship, because of course. Refueling your warp drive: still the most efficient method of finding new ships.
Anyway, this planet is pretty sweet. I haven't quite managed to do it justice via screenshots yet.
And then the next system over I saw this bizarre formation. Haven't had a chance to check it out up close yet, but I'm curious what it looks like on the surface.
Those have been in since launch. You can always ask Nada to point you in the direction of one.
They generally launch you pretty far, but not necessarily in the direction of the center.
Oh, can you actually enter them?
Yes, It's a one-way trip, and some of your ship tech might break and need repairing after. But it will send you several hundred thousand light years in a random direction. Generally, I have found they get me 30-50k closer to the center.

Oh yeah now I remember it. I used a couple on the PS4 version way back when the game launched. I'm currently playing it on steam so I've kinda restarted. I've also not really delved further than a single warp anywhere from my base system.
Right now I am farming emeril and vortex cubes for dosh so I can repair this hauler. I've got a ways to go. Still not done the base missions yet. Only just got the armorer, need to head back and meet him.
Still haven't found any of the ingredients needed for glass or the autonomous mining tech. What does the latter even do?

You attach the tech to the columns/arches/etc of ore deposits (Heridium, for example), and feel it silicate, and it will mine until it's filled (250 units of whatever it's attached to), supposedly until the resource is tapped out. Once it's full, it needs to be emptied, and once it's eaten through it's energy, same deal, so it's most useful to use on a planet you'll keep coming back to. I wouldn't suggest making more than one or two per column, though, as the cost to make them can be a bit steep in time sunk, and deleting them returns none of the resources you used to make them unless they're inside your base zone for some reason.

I keep seeing this around for super cheap on PS4 and I'm still really curious. Have they added much since release to get more in line with what was shown pre-release?

Heh so automated mining tool is pretty much pointless then. Seems like a lot of work for little gain.
The only use it really has in my opinion is to either be used on your home world, or used In that system on hard-to-find elements. But honestly, I feel like they're also for folks either trying to farm multiple elements and planets at the same time, or working on grinding heavy amounts of upgrades. I mean, since it doesn't run when the game is off, it's not even like it helps to leave them running when the game is off. It seems more like it's for people who have just enough time to farm up a few (5-10) in an attempt to maximize their time on a home planet. Leave the mining items and a beacon (because otherwise you might not be able to relocate them) and go back for a haul.
Then again, they were added back in the base building expansion, before the newest update to the economy, which can be gamed if you can get a good racket. For example, going to a mining system will give you access, possibly, to manufacturing materials to transport to a manufacturing system that then has . . . etc. Doing this in loops or small triangles can easily get you money. I'm looking right now at how to maximize my local systems for a profit. I got this item, Hot Ice, from a mission, and each one gives about 400,000 units even on a bad sale.

so here are some shots from the home system. finally set up base on the tiny snow moon i called "Little Pearl":
this is the massive planet it orbits, "Redshark": deep canyons and beautiful red grassy plains punctuated by the occasional tree. i think the climate's fine but the sentinels are frenzied:
and this is the planet closest to the space station. it's stunning, despite the acid rain - i think of it as the mushroom kingdom but i made a mistake in naming it. some of the big quadrupeds are hostile so it can be dangerous, but the scenery makes exploration worth it:
that ship's new too, and a testament to my commitment to this system. salvaged it because it has a shield installed i don't have the tech for yet (finding shield techs are a pain in the arse when you're going slow and methodically). but the look of it's growing on me!
While I was hunting for a new home base, I came across a radioactive planet that was mainly populated by Dodorexes.
Giant, filter-feeding, Dodorexes.
Before following any advice, opinions, or thoughts I may have expressed in the above post, be warned: I found Keven Costners "Waterworld" to be a very entertaining film.
Guys I don't think I'm leaving these two systems. So much to do! How do portals work? Does every system get one so I can always warp back to my home planet?
Also, this game is great through the steam link! The steam controller is a bit weird in general for me to use, feels too big but the controls are decent for the game.

I dunno anything about portals yet, but every space station will let you warp to your base (once you've claimed one) or to either of the last two space stations you've warped from. So you can always get back to your base from any system (and you can warp from the base to stations).
I've also been forgetting to use my Steam link, and with the new photo mode I don't even need F12 anymore so there's no reason to be playing at my desk. I use a 360 controller though, I just can't get used to the Steam one.
I think if you have the newer Xbox One controller that can just connect via Bluetooth it should work with the Steam Link just fine though I'm not sure.
edit: Quick googling seems to confirm this.

Well, it took me probably maybe over a year since I first sketched some out, but I've finally started on something I've been wanting to do since before the game came out.
Based on this. Currently it's starting to look okay from a distance.
Also, I just want to say that I really like seeing what people look for in planets, what y'all think is worth capturing, etc. And I especially like hearing why it appealed to you. So, anyway.
Also also I updated the OP and stuff as best I could, in case anyone new is stopping by.
I've finally gotten the ability to teleport from space stations and THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING! Its so cooooool! And missions have finally opened up so I can make a lot of money actively doing different things instead of grinding out minerals.
I started playing again once the update installed on my PS4.
I kept going with my original save because I don't want to start from scratch, and I assume that's why the green question marks won't go away when I reach the destination now.
Also I recently read about how the order of the fauna on your Discoveries screen gives hints as to where to find them, but that's in the old layout so now I'm still just ambling around trying to find the seventh thing on this ice ball. I have yet to properly scan a single planet. The Amateur status laughs at me from every trading terminal.

I love picking up missions that are like "scan creatures" or "scan minerals" because they're basically paying me to do what I would be doing anyway.
I've also noted a few things about scanning, such as if you see a red dot and center it in that middle area of the scan visor you can scan the critter without seeing it, and that zoom doesn't help with fliers, so as long as you can keep them in that middle area you're good.
My favorite animal scans are the ones where I can see the animal from far away, like just on the edge of draw distance, because I know that means they are fucking ginormous.

It's visible here in this picture. Might not look like much but...

With the appropriate dongle, any PC compatible controller will work with Steam Link. That includes all Xbox controllers.
Xbox One seems to take an extra step, but you can make it work. Is it that different than a 360 controller?

Heck, maybe it'll last long enough to get to another controller iteration.
