Man, I got out early enough that I'm ready for someone to give it another shot.

Hmm, the All or Nothing theory, huh? I supposed you're probably right. What's wrong w/ an all-jedi MMO though? Make the universe big enough, make enough variants of Jedi as someone mentioned earlier, make it so that you can still choose to be a part of the jedi order or not, perhaps even good, bad, neutral jedi. Seems plausible at least.

It would be like City of Heroes... only Jedi.

    It could work.

then again, I think that using a good balanced, tabletop rules system to handle the mechanics, ala the new Saga rules from WOTC, would work the best. That way you can have your epic bounty hunter and epic jedi, and both are on equal footing.

I'm sure it's been said, but I'll say it again, why not limit the character creation to where, if you create a jedi, then you're done. Unless you delete that character that will be the only character you ever have, on any server. So people need to make a choice, either they get to be an uber jedi and only an uber jedi (and many will) or they get to indulge their alt-itis and be a bounty hunter, pilot, mercenary, medic, etc, etc, etc...

I'm not sayin anyone would actually do this, but I'd like to hear reasons why it couldn't be done...

The only problem I see with this is that you're basically saying that you can either have one uber character, or a bunch of lesser characters. I imagine that most people will not even consider that a choice and go with the uber. plus, it doesn't stop anyone from multi-boxing and having both anyway.

But the gist of what you are proposing still rings true. actually present a choice to players. with consequences. you can be uber, but it will take you..oh I dunno, 5 times as much work to get there. or permadeath or what have you. And hey, Jedi can be the uber combat mage class or whatever, but if the game is deep enough, other professions can get the advantage in other areas. For example, disallow Light Jedi from having money??

What would of course be also nice is if Jedi actually fucking acted like Jedi. instead of just: "LOLZ!! look at my LEE+ jEdI sKiLlZ

I'm not talking about mandatory RP or anything like that, just not allowing crap that obviously breaks immersion.

I suppose the easiest thing to do is to not allow players to be a Jedi at all. Of course there would probably be a ton of bitching.

If they made Jedi permadeath or a lot harder to play as there would be bitching.

If they allowed players to choose Jedi, but made them balanced with the other classes there would be bitching.

Hm, I don't think there is a scenario that wouldn't involve a lot of bitching. Cept not make a Starwars MMO.

Heheh...I just pictured some stuffy executive somewhere w/ dollar signs in his eyes thinking about people buying the game twice, and paying double subscription, so they can play both types...

The increased difficulty could work perhaps. I think even making leveling twice as hard, instead of five, would probably be enough of a hit. I also like the no-money thing, and it would fit great for a good jedi, but doesn't really make sense if you allowed evil or neutral jedi...perhaps only allow good jedi? and yah, making someone ACT like a jedi is just a lost cause and a huge shame...

If there was never a second attempt by anyone to make a Star Wars MMO, I would eventually bitch. Loudly.

but the difficulty thing, it would have to be coupled w/ making Jedi badasses. Then at least it's a trade-off. Get a plus for a minus. But yes, there would be bitching...

In fact, head on over to the WoW forums...believe, you WILL see bitching, and this for the most mind-blowingly successful MMO ever.

So really, make MMO, there will be bitching. And as I said, not make Star Wars MMO, there will be bitching.

    No win.

That would work from a game perspective, but not a business perspective. Remember, people are paying monthly to play their Jedi -- permadeath doesn't work outside of free MUDs, where it is, in fact, a great system.

I'll admit I'm not a fan of permadeath either, there is just too much shit that can go wrong that wouldn't be the player's fault. RL interfereing, boom you die and lose all your work through no fault of your own.

but surely they can think of some good trade offs for being uber.

Togfather is precisely right though, no matter what any MMO has done, there has been bitching involved..so why pander to the whiners. you know damn well people will come in droves to play a Bioware KOTOR MMO

That's what's always pissed me off about your standard MMOs, They try and please everyone and all playstyles, but everyone bitches anyway. so why bother, focus on doing one thing right instead of a shitty job on a lot of things.

edit: In related MMO thoughts, I hope to fuck this game is amazing, but I'm willing to see it flop if it must. It'd be great if they actually brought over a lot of the SWG ideas of non-jedi livelihood, but somehow I figure it'll be namely jedi related if only because of its title. Here's hoping we get more information before the summer begins or something.

Yeah. And the Sith armor looks totally gay. I don't see how anyone can play an MMO where you can't look like a badass. I want some big, evil looking armor. Expect an even worse Good/Evil distribution than Alliance/Horde in WoW.

This is LAME. I loved KoToR for the story, not leveling grinding, which is all MMOs are good for. MMOs are also not the best way to tell a story since they are never supposed to have a set ending. It seems the recent MMO fad has taken away another one of the games I was really looking forward too :(

God, every aspect of an mmo just becomes awesome in a star wars context. how did they fuck up SWG so badly?

Just base it kind of around the modern WoW style a la LOTRO and WHO.

Make being a Jedi like the 60-70 specilisation in WoW but not wildly overpowered. Most people wanna play jedi anyways, make them a DPS class. Then you work on making non jedis awesome and just as powerful. Heck, Id love to be a canderous style long range dps or god, a HK47 stylee guy, maybe having droids as familiars.

raiding would also be amazing, man, just thinking about an MMO almost just like WoW in terms of combat and smoothness would be amazing with star wars.

alternatively, if this is bioware, adding in guild wars style cutscenes and dialogue would be brilliant.

This made me not want the game to be made.

    Cheers.

See, I'd want an MMOFPS/RPG/Flight Sim.

What I want is a game that lets me do whatever the fuck I want in a universe that allows me to buy a Muurian Tansport, trick it out, take a job from factions that have a minimal but observable effect on the gaming world as a whole.

Basically mix a TIE Fighter quality flight sim, a Jedi Knight series quality FPS with Deus Ex/SS2 RPG elements, Morrowind/Oblivion do-whatever-the-fuck-I-wantedness and drop the entire thing in a player run economy ala Eve Online. The Core is run by the NPC authorities (whether that be the Republic or the Empire) and the fringes are, for the most part, up for grabs.

It will never happen though. I can't imagine a company that would be willing to invest the time and effort it would take to incorperate a top-notch flight sim, FPS and RPG all into a single game.

Around the time of KotOR, there really weren't. That's why the Jedi in KotOR were based out of a secret academy on Dantooine. Nearly half the Jedi turned to the dark side after the Mandalorian Wars and by the end of the Jedi Civil War (the war which is being fought during KotOR), there weren't many more than a hundred Jedi left.
