Tried the beta... Evidently something is very wrong somewhere and the game isn't talking to my ancient video card (GeForce 6600 GT) correctly, since all 3d textures are flickering and vomiting everywhere, and then it starts to freeze, and then it restarts the PC.
Interesting.
Edit: But the game does run perfectly smoothly for those first ten seconds, beautifully high framerate with highest textures. It's almost like a memory leak.
Thats a pity, the beta really is quite fun to play for lack of the real thing. At the least the gameplay videos are breeding like rabbits.

so just in case people didn't see it, from the official site -
"The Tutorial has a glitch that requires users to run at 1024x768. We're going to release a minor update later in the week or early next week that addresses that."
I have no idea how a bug like that can slip through into the first thing a player sees in the game. very sloppy.
In any case I did buy it and it's waiting for me at home, very excited.
Yeah, it's frustrating because I get to play for just a handful of seconds, and I can see how fun it would be, and I think, maybe this time, with just the right settings, I've gotten it to work. And then chunks of the skybox start to turn bright green and sear my retina and I cry because I love homeworld and MoO just so much and oh god please just work so I can play

Fucking pirates. They've got like 75 ships in their system and I need to go through there to fight my opponent. While I was in there I noticed that pirate raiding fleets just spawn there, they're not built. I hate it when shit doesn't follows the rules.

I ran the tutorial just fine in 1920x1200.
dunno.
so did I...but only the first time. After that nothing happens.
Also, I'm sitting here going O_o trying to figure out how the resolution setting of all things could affect the tutorial.
Haven't tried the aliens yet, but at the moment I really like the Advent. I'm a sucker for turtling up and winning through culture.
Civ 4 was great in that regard.
Though in soase the culture thing seems a little out of context from the rest of the themes. perhaps if it was 'subversion' or 'rebellion' or something instead of culture. like instead of tv stations and stuff you have something more militaristic. i think the whole idea of splitting military from civilian goes against all my pre conceived notions of what a space faring race would be like.

Worked fine for me at 1920x1080 as many times as I care to run it.
The tutorial seems to have numerous bugs, from dying at start up to freaking out if you do something before it tells you to.

So is this game worth forty five bucks? Because it seems really cool, but there also seems to be some problems and I don't know if I want to spend my game-buying moneys on something that I will not enjoy for long
Keep in mind I enjoyed GalCiv II and Homeworld 2 immensely
Well I like what I've played of it so far, which hasn't been much unfortunately. I've been rather busy recently but hopefully tomorrow or the next day I can sit down and dedicate some more time to it.

well I played through tutorial 1 with no issues by just using all the default graphical settings.
then i just played through tutorial 2 after bumping everything to maximum and choosing a nice awesome widescreen resolution.

Think a much darker Galciv II with a real time combat system that works, the 4x elements don't suffer from real time simply because the game speed is generally fairly slow, and the amount of micro management needed can be cut down heavily with options. The games only similarity to Homeworld is that it's in space and has pretty colors and lots of ships that shoot at each other. I could compare it to Freespace and have as much ground to stand on. (More, possibly, as the scale is surprising when you actually get down to look at how tiny the fightercraft really are.)
It does have the Nexus/Hegemonia theme going. If you like blood fueds, genocide, eye candy and in system warfare to go along with your Civ/MoO empire building experience you should feel right at home.
The games bugs seem mostly limited to it's tutorial and arguably misguided diplomacy system, and there's already a slew of people on the official sniffling over being spanked by Pirates. The first ain't a particularly big problem as the game is easy to pick up after playing any given 4x and rts game, and the pirate issue can be resolved by either sucking less or editing a couple text files. As well, the dev lead has promised a number of pirate free maps to be released for the map making challenged in the near future. As for the diplomacy system, well. Some people like it, some people hate it. A number of people aren't quite sure whats going on. I like to pretend that my opponents are democratic, it explains their erratic behavior.
-It would be really awesome if a mod would edit the title of this thread. From now 'til the end of days newcomers will see it and come in here to question and critisize it's status as a Homeworld clone. It's not Homeworld. The fighters have cool engine trails. Thats all. *cry*

Actually, I was playing with the map maker earlier and it seems pretty easy to use. You'd have to be totally retarded if you couldn't figure it out.
Apparently my GF6600's fan broke, so it's been overheating, like, really badly. I just near burned my fingers. Weirdly, though, after clearing the dust away and letting it cool down, it works! It fricking works!

The problem with Nexus is that you felt totally lost with what is going on in the game... basically, the lack of a good tutorial hurt. Being as methodical as I was... ugh
Damn, I want this game. I have been itching for another game like Hegemonia for a long time...
I still wish there was a new Imperium Galactica game... I miss IG2.

Yup. Obviously, from now until I can get a new card, I'm gonna be pretty careful with how long I spend gaming...
Almost finished my third game: 2v2v2. On what is likely the final push and have learned to use the AI commands to get my partner to coordinate with me. Last battle I had before I had to save to go out involved 2 of my caps + some cruisers vs 4 of one of the 3 remaining foes caps and a small fleet of frigates at their homeworld.
They had to end up running as my caps were a level 10 Carrier (Advent) and a lvl 9 Battlecruiser, the leftmost one (equivalent to the Kol). Between the levels and the amount of tech upgrades I had they only managed to get the shields down on one of the two before losing two of their caps and having to start to retreat.
Earlier fun was an attack on one of my chokepoint systems by 6 caps + god knows how many frigates vs my full setup of defenses and 4 caps. I ended up losing 2 of my caps as well as the planet and had to retreat. Built up an absolutely massive force of cruisers and caps, snuck in when they had broken up the invasion force to assault some other worlds, and then pincered them in a contested system with my AI parter. End result was 4 different factions from 3 different sides engaged in an immense firefight, probably 10+ capital ships involved. The other two factions ended up retreating and losing quite a number of ships in the process.
Sucked though as one was Advent and had tons of Guardian ships (which have the giant shield), couldn't see squat through all the shield bubbles.

Really? I found the first three missions to be more than adequate at teaching you how the game works. I mean, it walks you through step-by-step.

Well, let me rephrase that, I had to base my opinion off the demo. I know, bad idea. Usually in games like this, they put in a tutorial in the demo especially.
Knowing that the full game isn't like that... is it any good?

OK, my account is squared away.
Aye, I tried that after reading their FAQ. But, no dice. Hasn't changed anything.

dunno.
Real men learn the hard way, online and with 2 grand on the table.
The hard way was me sitting in front of the monitor zooming in and out then being pwned by 10 billion siege frigates.
I remember having the same attitude with Galciv. Fuck this tutorial bullshit (online guides and all) just jump right in.
The onyl word to describe what its like to do that is 'getting brutally violated then spat on'
so did I...but only the first time. After that nothing happens.

It's an awesome tool to use. What tickles me is the thought of setting up a map along the lines of the Honor series or something similar.
