Metzen's story prowess notwithstanding, he a little bit influenced me into my current career. I remember poring over Samwise and his art in the Warcraft 1 manual.

I couldn't focus on Diablo 3's story because of its absolutely godawful voice acting

    Maybe it was awesome

    I'll never know

The story in D3 isn't that terrible
The storytelling is what is atrocious

In D3 bosses are constantly yelling at you that your last victory doesn't matter because the next minion is going to beat you. It makes them all seem incompetent. By the time you get to them they have lost all credible threat.

Also iirc you get backstabbed by like 4 obviously evil people that your character inexplicably trusts over the course of the game. Some of them pretty much immediately. (See: Zoltan Khule).

technically your character totally expects kulle to betray you and he never has an opportunity to do any damage with that betrayal

He knew exactly what story he was in and how much it needed a classic pantomime villain cackle.

    Metzen did good stuff.

On the plus side, our heroes are finally safe from Corruption.

So, what's the deal with Leah?
This is the most frustrating part of Diablo 3's storyline for me personally.

Diablo 3 had the most annoyingly incomprehensible and irredeemable plot line of any Blizzard game ever made.

Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.

Diablo 3 ended up being mechanically brilliant, but man that game sure was a Blizzard game top to bottom (as opposed to a Blizzard North game) there's such a palpable shift in tone, atmosphere and storytelling style compared to 1&2.

He made a career out of the art you draw in the margins of your notebook during algebra.

    And that's fucking awesome.

What do you mean what's the deal?
She's an innocent woman who is brutally killed (or probably worse) in a hamfisted effort to raise the stakes for the climax. That's it; that's the whole deal.
It is, in fact, very narratively frustrating for a host of reasons, but I don't see where the confusion is.

I think that diablo 3's story reduced to its major beats is serviceable, though the fact that the nephalem picks up on Emperor Hakan's treachery but Adria's comes as this huge fuckin' surprise will never not be completely stupid to me

as is the fact that the act bosses can't seem to shut the fuck up

(although that whole idea worked fine for Claudia Black's character, because I will listen to Claudia Black say damn near anything for as long as she's saying it)

Metzen provided the soul of a lot of games that 90's-me loved.
    u5olscr8kb1i.jpg
But nothing, nothing, will ever be better than Paci-FIST written on a space marine's armored hand. He nailed the Warhammer 40k aesthetic better than Games Workshop could.

I love that even when he was still a pretty amateurish artist he was still like "I'mma embellish the ever-loving FUCK out of this"

I didn't notice till finding that image just now that he clearly was waffling between "Thundergod" and "God of Thunder" and then decided both.

just to set up something like this? What happened to carrying on the legacy, I thought they were going address that by reviving Leah somehow in the expansion but nope absolutely nothing

Tyrael takes over the role of "one half-competent person who knows the score" and restarts the Horadrim

I was fine with what they did with Leah but it would have been nice if they'd written it so that some fragment of her was able to be extracted from Diablo

    Good for Metz.
I'm sure his family is tired of all of the time he's devoted to the Blizzard universe. He can go spend all of his millions enjoying life now.

Except then after everything Tyrael went through with us he was all

"AH FUCK, CORRUPTION" "tyrael what all I did was stop Malthiel"

diablo 3's main story is so bad, at least the world building and side stuff is still okay

I thought Kerrigan was a neat villain/anti-hero in the original StarCraft. When they tried to repeat it with Arthas in WC3 though even middle-school me thought it was a tired retread.

I did not realize Metzen was so young. That must have been one hell of a ride working for a burgeoning Blizzard from age 20-onward.
