I'm having a lot of trouble with a build for fane in act 1. I know I can reroll in act 2 though...
Hes my primary caster, but I'm struggling with GOOD things that will heal him, but then also having ways for him to do huge amounts of damage against enemies. He dies SO FAST RIGHT NOW it suuuucks.
Any good build advice?
kind of sucks that we cant like, re-organize who has what spells memorized thoooo
edit: thinking of having red prince be fire-boy, and then maybe fane with geomancer/hydosophist so he can heal peeps? Or maybe giving sebille (shes the rogue) hydro and then giving fane air/geo/necro...
summoner seems goooood tho
Summoner is good. Geo on Fans is real good. Geo on a different caster is marginally better and that is debatable (A few spells state effects of "characters" and "undead allies" but not self so he couldn't use those to heal while an ally could, but that ally then needs to take Fane's position in to account during battle).
Geo Pyro is a good base for a caster Fane.
You DONT get to re-assign spells and shit in act 2 when you re-roll, right??
I'm so torn because theres shit i want to have SOMEONE cast now, but I dont want to waste moneys and slots now with having a kind of crap build.
party is:
fane (Pyrotechnic, Warfare) <-- happy with this
sebille (Polymorph, Scoundrel) <-- happy with this one
red prince (Necromancer, Hydrosophist) also: (Aerothurge, Geomancer)
ifan (Geomancer, whatever the shooty one is)
edit: And fane already has quite a few level 1 Hydro/Aero/Geo/necro spelllllsssss.. so I'm trying to decide what is worth putting points in now : / because even tho you canr eroll i guess you cant re-assign skills
Skill books are also typically cheap compared to the rest of the gear you can buy, on top of lasting significantly longer at later levels. Gold also becomes less of an issue as you level up as long as you're letting one character be your barter bot.
It's even a smaller issue if you're not a coward and willing to pickpocket people.

alright, feeling less bad about Fane being sort of a shitty mess now then. Do still want to plan out who has what tho.

Yeah, first tier skill books (which includes tons of amazing skills) are like 600g and you'll eventually have tens of thousands of gold as long as you either steal stuff or go full Lucky Charm on one character. If you both steal and use Lucky Charm then you'll probably have more money than you can spend. Also you'll eventually have tons of skill points from both levels and gear, my support mage uses Pyro, Hydro, Aero, Necro and Warfare skills at least.
Bone Willow hits harder on physical and has a teleport
Incarnate is 2AP for regular but requires and additional AP for any sort of utility and hits for a little less
Also with Elemental Affinity, Bone Willow is 2AP if you are an elf standing in blood created by flesh sacrifice.

Because of Lucky Charm, theft when appropriate, and letting my barter bot handle all transactions I ended up with over 50k gold. I spent a chunk of that and forget where I'm at but I foresee going a while without any vendor breaks again so I'll hit that threshold easily I suspect.
Only daggers can backstab, which is a guaranteed critical. If you've been raising your scoundrel skill your crit multiplyer will be so high your daggers will out damage two handed weapons.

I would guess that the dual wield penalty makes the backstab damage from a second dagger do more. And since axes also scale off of strength, the finesse scaling dagger will outpace it?
cool!! thanks. Right now it says the axe damages more, will it actually update the item to show that the dagger will do more? Like, does it display the bonus-with-finesse?? right now with the axe it says damage 36-40 and with the dagger it says 36-39, that SHOULD be accurate, right?
Like, doesnt she backstab ALSO with the axe? Or does the backstab only stab with the dagger? Okay, also, note to self, increase crit multiplier!!

All weapons have crit modifiers listed at the top of the window and increasing it via abilities (scoundrel, two handed) will update that number.
As for the listed damage ranges, those should not be updated unless you go to the character sheet and hover over damage, where it lists any appropriate math underneath the damage value. But just hovering over a weapon itself shouldn't do anything but list the stats of that specific weapon.
Edit - the only weapons that backstab as far as I'm aware are daggers. It says so in the weapon tooltip if it can or not. The only other weapon I'd think can backstab is maybe a spear but that's only because it's also a finesse weapon but MORE THAN LIKELY those cannot backstab.
I found Hannag's apprentice (the fight at the Blackpits was a definite thing), and went back to Hannag so she could teach me source. This resulted in losing the Pet Pal talent, and not even getting the point back, so basically if you open conversation with Hannag with a character with Pet Pal you will lose a talent point forever. You can retrain Pet Pal at the lady Vengeance by exchanging it for another talent, but that character will forever have less talents.
I reloaded, though. I didn't want to lose a talent plus the thing seems kind of evil? Very much Dark Sun defiler stuff, if you know what I mean. Getting Saheila's boost was harder but it seemed a +1 Source with no ill side effects!. /spoiler]
I don't know if this ever changes, but at level 15 my incarnates are still my mvps. I have two summoners with 1-2 in all the other mage skills and a ton of memory. They spend all their AP each turn buffing/debuffing. They do more damage than my rogue when she bursts. Plus, the mages can just use shields so they are much tankier than my 'tank'. Each turn they buff armor/teleport foes/haste/charm etc.
My 'tank' just has maxed out leadership + extra from gear and is giving everyone 42% resists and 28% dodge. His damage is weak, but he has 4 physical damage CC skills. So he just follows around my incarnates and CCs stuff.
Then there is my poor rogue. She is basically a unbuffed wood incarnate. Her mobility is great, but I can cast an incarnate anywhere too.
is it actually possible to not get all 3 points? I've turned down/killed every master except saheila so far, party is level 16 and I'm starting to feel like I'm running out of areas.

I accidentally discovered that if you left the Magisters alive who guard the gates, you can teleport an Oozeling near it and aggro them to fight the Oozes, which was a big help. Magister Grimes in particular is a walking Death Machine.

I think there are six potential sources of Source ? The Advocate, Saheila, the dwarf, Hannag, Ryker, and one other that I am forgetting.

there's jahan, who I turned down, and one more that I just found in paradise downs. if her source level up method involves killing stuff like...pretty much all the others except saheila I might see what happens if you move on to the next area at source level 2.

Hannag doesn't actually ask you to kill anyone...
I don't know what her reward actually entails but I know that animals already have it bad enough in this game and I'm not about to make that any worse.
And apparently the reward you get from Jahan is a buff unique to him that you only get from getting his reward when your Source pool is maxed out.

I think you can get the source without losing Pet Pal if you use a different character to talk to her.
Okay, is there ANY way other than Saheila to raise your Source without being a dick?
I did the quest for Ryker and as it turns out he wants to sacrifice souls to raise my Source. So the first way was to kill innocent woodland animals, the other is to literally murder souls. At this rate I expect by the time I find the next option it will require me to throw a puppy into a woodchipper and eat the resulting puree!

Jahan wants you to kill a demon. Dunno what that entails exactly but demons usually aren't great dudes. I was gonna get around to that after exploring Paradise Downs but my computer died so I'm stuck in limbo over here.

hey, I was asking this exact question yesterday! most of them are murdery/require the sacrifice or enslavement of life, even demonic life, so if you're playing a lawful no-fun, no collateral damage paladin type those won't fly. there is one exception that allowed me to hit level 3.
"almira" in the NE corner of the map will have you do a quest for her with a source level as a reward. her catch is that she wants to sleep with you, which worked for my char since only he was affected and also I really wanted level 3, so...

And apparently the reward you get from Jahan is a buff unique to him that you only get from getting his reward when your Source pool is maxed out.
You can get the Jahan skill book reward multiple times by talking to Jahan with different characters. That's how I got the book skill book twice. It's a pretty sweet skill too. You get a massive boost to magic armor for 1 source point and it does other stuff you don't really care about as a summoner.
There are 6 possible ways to get more source points. Only two of them seem like dicks to me. (kill animals, kill spirits) Also, even though I killed Ryker I still get the dialog option to consume the spirits so I wonder if you can still get the source point if you choose that path. (I already had three)
So far I've encountered:
Mordus (He's a dick, but you just have to release him and eat a void heart).
Saheila (Not a dick)
Jahan (Not a dick) + you don't have to actually kill demons
Ryker (Major dick)
Hannag (Major dick)
There is a succubus as well right? Jahan and Saheila seem like the best options.

Mordus is also a somewhat merciful route, isn't it? You get it by being sort of fed up with him and convincing him to help you out so it's not the worst route thinking of it that way. Ideally you want three before dealing with Jahan so you get his unique skill book. That leaves Saheila as the only really...lawful good option available. Ryker also has benefits to killing him, you can use the tome he wants to craft something I believe, or use it in a separate quest line to get a recipe at least. You can also take the Source point and then kill him anyways, use him to further your own personal goals. You hand it over after he's done.
Harming animals is straight up just out of the question and is only acceptable when absolutely necessary.

Mordus slaughters people for their source if you release him. You can get multiple books from Jahan by talking to him with different party members. He repeats the entire dialog tree over again. It's a cheesy way to get free stuff! So no reason not to use Jahan for the source point.

Yeah totally against it.
You can get Mordus to help you without letting him go. It's a kind of asshole move but given what sort of creature he is I didn't lose much sleep over it.
Unless he comes back when I did it he basically started disintigrating because I made him spill the beans. He gave me a Source point and when I started pressing him further, aggressively, he started to crumble into nothingness.
I'm interested in this game, but unsure how well it'll run - I have a Radeon 6770 and a few-year-old i5 with 6gb of RAM. Anybody playing this on a similar setup?
Honestly, I value Spell/Physical Armor recovery higher than pure hp recovery. Not only does Fortify/Armor of Frost cure CC/Status effects, they prevent additional ones from being applied. However, Spell/Physical Armor is heavily dependent on gear and there really isn't many options in Act 1/Fort Joy so it might be easier to rely on food/potions early on to survive
So, no, its not too important imo. You'd have to be more careful to keep everyone alive through each fight but you can easily heal up after and before fights with the bedroll

also i really wish the skilllbooks said the spells range omg
The exception is AoE ranges though (like supernova), which do vary.
Nope, at least Tentacle Lash has its own range, around 6m I think? Way longer than melee but shorter than a full-range spell for sure.

But it depends what difficulty you play on, I couldn't imagine it being possible on tactician to not have a couple of healing spells.
