My favorite thing to complain about is melee enhanced sniper rifles.
Nah, you know what's worse than that? Shotguns with high-zoom scopes. And the higher rarity a thing is, the more attachments it's likely to have, scopes among them. So a high-grade shotty is almost certain to have a scope that makes it nigh-unusable.
The Arkham Knight playthrough continues. For a while the game was crashing to desktop every time I died, which added a sort of unintentional tenseness to each difficult encounter. Thanks for that, WB. Also, you can exploit the collision detection to toss guys off of buildings and now I do that all the time because my Batman is a murdering psychopath.
Anyway, I've been on a Batman kick lately and have been rewatching Batman: The Animated Series for the past while. TAS has its own continuity separate from the comics, and is set in a dark retro-future environment (the creators called it "Dark Deco").
In that universe gene-splicing and genetic engineering exist, as does artificial intelligence (among a number of other "high tech" things), but they still use vacuum tubes for their computers, most computers have command line interfaces, and everyone has a black and white TV. Vehicles are styled after the large, curved ones from the 40s and 50s. The police use blimps to patrol the city from the skies.
Basically, I'm pretty sure Batman: The Animated Series and pre-war classic Fallout share the same universe.
I was talking with my baby brother and explained to him that Bruce Timm did for dc what marvel is doing now, except without the benefit of the internet allowing webseries to generate income alongside comics and television.
So Borderlands Pre-Sequel, True Vault Hunter Mode. Been actually enjoying the 2nd run through with the story again although it has really cemented my opinions of I HATE BULLET SPONGES. I'm stuck at a part now where 3 super badasses have spawned in a smallish area and 2 of them have that insta-kill (it's not really insta, but it is 2 hits death) lobbing morter thing. I cannot damage them fast enough to kill them and I've died a half dozen times now which is pretty frustrating. I've been in TVHM long enough now that my weapons are caught up (going after the AI) and it's really irritating that even swapping around damage types and moonbouncing my lawbringer tookus off, all it takes is a couple hits from those guys and I'm toast. I even found a way to hide behind a railing up high and thought "finally, I can cheese them down now" and LOLNOPE! They bounced right up there and murdered my crying in a corner butt.
Had to quit and put it down I was so irritated.
I sorta agree with the bullet sponges. I think they just overdid it. I loved Borderlands 2, but I hated UVHM mode because of how much damage it took to kill anything. I think they could lower the health a little bit, but i think the most aggravating part was their heal rate. If you had to stop shooting at something to reload, they just got so much health back its ridiculous.

Yea I dunno. After these 3 borderlands games we've got, I think they need a long break to look really hard at their formula and tweak it. The first was absolutely great and groundbreaking. The 2nd was pretty weak, PS made up for it with story. But all through it the core game is still pretty much the same. There is a lot in there that could use with some fixing. My favorite thing to complain about is melee enhanced sniper rifles. They really need to tweak their random-gun generating stuff to give you things that will work for you.
Plus if they don't know how to tweak hp/shield levels on the fly for when the game has multiple people, then I dunno what to say. That's been a thing for awhile. I do hope the story in 3 goes elsewhere though.
There's more competition in the loot shooter department now too. Destiny wasn't yet a thing when Borderlands came out and now it is.

Tl;Dr - game doesn't support Mandarin, user makes mod. Every time the game updates, the more has to be remade from scratch, since the engine doesn't support the characters. Sometime in June, he gets tired of it, posts a link to a piracy site with an older version the mod works with. Devs notice, his account gets banned, they talk, it gets reinstated, he removes mod, and tons of negative reviews from Chinese users are coming in. When this was first posted, it's rating was "Mixed."
Thanks for posting! After a million mediocre attempts to make a worthy successor to Master of Magic (half of those half-formed horrors coming from Stardock), these guys came out of virtually nowhere to show everyone else how it's done. They deserve all the praise we can give.
In particular whoever does their UI design deserves a medal - it doesn't matter how polished or groundbreaking your mechanics are if players can't readily understand them.
I wonder if their superior elegant UI design is thanks to the company being French and having a better cultural appreciation of design than american game designers.
I'm especially mindful of the contrast with anglo-american gaming grognards, who seem to relish having a DOS/Win95 approach to UI/UX. Games published by battlefront and Slitherine/Matrix Games are the worst offender for that sort of thing, and those designers seem to have an unrepentant view of themselves as serving a niche market who are "too serious" to care about quality of life features and price games like paper copies of Advanced Squad Leader (the flare path did a great write-up of that sort of backwards view, with a focus on back-catalog pricing, here: https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2016/08/19/the-flare-path-slash-or-spurn/)

Tons of other people talking about it of course, all your favorite reviewers, etc. Just a heads up.
An unconscionable crime, which someone will probably mod out within the first week of the games launch.
Apparently they're going to release a fix for it (sounds like it wasn't intentional), so I guess the Framerate Police can close the book on this heinous case.
It's currently sitting at 31% user reviews right now, which to me suggested a fundamentally broken PC port.
Nope, just a bunch of one line reviews going "30 FPS locked" with a negative rating. That, really, doesn't tell me anything substantially useful. Really hope they release that fix soon, so I can find some useful opinions.
Yeah, good luck with that. I mean, I still think Arkham Knight should be fucked, but supposedly they eventually patched the performance. It still has that reputation though

Which reminds me that it's a crime, that we still didn't heard anything about Borderlands 3. Come on 2K, no one cared or cares about Battleborn, give us some Vault to hunt!

I'd be ok with more shoot and loot games coming to the PC though. The Destiny 2 rumors tickle my pickle - back when I had a PS4 I played a bunch of Destiny and had a blast. It had its problems but it was the first game I played in a long time that recaptured the specific flavor of fun I used to have playing Phantasy Star Online.

Having fun with SOMA, pretty terrifying and getting nicely invested in the story and atmosphere.
Biggest weakness is the monsters. Other than a few super predictable ones, far too often they just manage to bumble into my hiding spot and kill me. It really diminishes my enjoyment when I have to wonder why I'm bothering with hiding at all.
This is literally because the game is deciding that you're bored and is thus teleporting the enemy right to you. SOMA requires you to keep moving to avoid this, but honestly I don't think it's very good game design for a horror game. This is why I prefer Charlie from Alien Isolation, who won't find you if you're staying still and quiet somewhere unless you drastically screw up - even though he is tethered to your position depending on the difficulty.
On the plus side, I'm not really set back when I "die" so there isn't too much frustration involved, but on the minus side there really isn't an incentive not to die. I was looking forward to enemies that actually stuck around longer than a minute but then with their homing AI and areas missing valid ways to get around them I'm paradoxically wishing they'd just go away.
I ended my play session last night after I encountered my third monster in the same base, not out of fear but to avoid tedium.
One of the big problems with SOMA is it simply doesn't feel like it was designed to have monsters. The creatures do have cool variations in how they behave and track the player, however the places they patrol are often not built to accommodate Amnesia-style hide/creep/run gameplay, and I think Frictional hasn't quite gotten past that mindset. Some sections have tight quarters where it's practically impossible to sneak by; you either exploit the enemy's behavior (in one case it only sees you if you see it, so wedging yourself into a corner until it passes can work) or you run in, take the hit, and run past while it's despawned. Others offer no cover and many winding hallways against an enemy that can outrun you and attacks almost immediately on sight. Still others try to relate worldbuilding details while you're trying to stay hidden.
It's also less than clear that you can actually die. I went the whole game getting my ass kicked, including by things that should have been one-hit kills, and only once got a game over - from falling down a hole. What happens when you're attacked is the monster punches or grabs you or whatever, your screen goes dark, and you wake up in basically the same spot or a nearby checkpoint; the monster has buggered off and are free to continue. Some can hit you like a half-dozen times without appearing to do any lasting damage. Also, several designs just aren't that menacing. They're weird and hostile, sure, but many of them don't have arms or other obvious appendages and just bump into you to attack.
Then there are narrative issues, and this goes into early spoiler territory (big spoilers, to be sure). Suffice to say the story itself undercuts a lot of the tension:
Seriously, don't click this if you haven't played SOMA and are planning to.
Considering Simon is already dead and Earth is irreparably fucked, it begs the question of what exactly you're supposed to be afraid of. You play a robot implanted with his memories, trying to launch a satellite as a last-ditch effort to preserve something of the now-extinct human race. There are hints that the Warden Unit, which created the monsters, wants to consume the Ark, but it's never made clear why and there's never any sense of the thing being in danger, except of simply not getting to space. Nothing threatens because there's nothing to threaten - just a bunch of machines carrying out a dying wish. It's conceptually unsettling and great fodder for a story, just ineffective at maintaining a horror atmosphere.
SOMA is still a really good game, and it shows that Frictional has come a long way since the '06 tech demo for Penumbra. Just don't go in expecting Amnesia 2.
I feel like outside of @Stabbity Style getting Black Ops 2, this has always been bad. Like, the games are almost not worth the money you paid for them.

Yeah, good luck with that. I mean, I still think Arkham Knight should be fucked, but supposedly they eventually patched the performance.
I'm playing it on an i5 2500 at 3.3GHz stock with 16GB of RAM and an 8GB RX 480 and I'm getting 60fps most of the time. I have all settings maxed (except the Gameworks stuff, all of it is off except for the fancy rain) at 2560x1080 and while it's not a super graphical powerhouse it still looks pretty nice (and you can perch up on a building or something on one end of the city and see the entire map spread out before you so it can be pretty demanding).
The issues I've been having have been more along the lines of weird little bugs rather than performance related. For example, sometimes when I am maybe a hundred feet or so away from my Batmobile, if I call it to me instead of driving over to where I am it will launch up into the air and disappear.
Also sometimes the mooks I am fighting will get stuck on stairs.
Also one time I chokeslammed a guy so hard he turned incorporeal and slowly sank into the ground, never to be seen again.

So uh, The Silver Case is out. Hopefully I'm not the only person here who's interested.
If I could make just one change to Borderlands, I would tweak how it handles recoil. As it is right now, I think recoil recovery is too slow, and recoil direction is too inconsistent. The total amount of recoil you can build up might be too high as well. But basically, with anything not a sniper rifle, a shotgun, a dahl weapon, a hyperion pistol, or some other weapon that happens to have extremely high stability, firing for just a few seconds will leave your gun swinging around wildly in every direction. And to recover from that, well, I've never tested exactly how long it takes to recover from recoil, but it's always felt too long to me. I'll try to cease fire for an amount of time that feels like it should be enough to recover from recoil, but then I fire and nope still can't shoot for shit. And the recoil just goes every which way instead of predominantly in one direction, so there's no way to really compensate for it.
I've put a couple hundred hours into BL2, and I think this is the main thing I dislike about it. Just, the vast majority of the guns are really unstable and as a result don't feel very good to use.

IIRC, shooting sighted in increases projectile speed for non-hitscan weapons so with an elemental or Torgue shotgun you're more likely to land shots on what you're targeting when sighted in.
Hello Steam thread! In about three weeks time, I'll be doing my annual 24 hour gaming marathon in an effort to help raise money to help sick kids over at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia! This'll be my sixth(holy cow six years...) year participating in the online charity event known as Extra-Life.
Extra-Life helps organize thousands of gamers online in an effort for them to come together and raise money for sick kids around the world. Since its inception in 2008, Extra-Life has raised more than $22 million for local CMN Hospitals! Their official start date this year is in November, but that date wasn't going to work for my captain or me, so we're going to do it earlier. On Saturday October 22nd, I'll launch my stream around 10am EST and will not get off until at least October 23rd at 10am EST.
If you don't have money to spare, no worries! You can also help by sharing my fundraiser page on social media before the event or by sharing my Twitch.tv channel on the day of the event! Exposure is the best way to get donations so even if you might not afford a few dollars at the moment, someone who you know might! And again, any amount will definitely help and all donations are 100% tax deductible.
Finally, I'll be playing mostly multiplayer games like Battlerite, Overwatch, Armello, Rocket League, and Move or Die (for examples) on stream. I should already have a good number of friends online playing with me, but if you're free and see me online playing solo during the marathon, feel free to shoot me a message asking to play games! Doesn't matter the time zone, remember I'll be on for at least 24 hours! Move or Die is also a special case where I'll need as many viewers as I can muster to make it more interesting for those playing the game as it has a special "Twitch mode" that allows players to vote on different things that affect the game-play.
But Koopah, I have the iciest heart on PA forums and I hate children. How can I benefit from this?
So here's the tasty bit. I will be conducting raffles for prizes for PA users who donate! The grand raffle will be $100 in Steam Bucks. I'll PM you a code for $100 gift card that I'll buy and activate at GameStop or Best Buy myself. Do whatever you want with it. The second raffle will be a game from my Most Wanted friends list (Currently looking like Doom or Divinity II: Original Sin, but still TBD). The third raffle will have two winners, and will be two Blizzard cards for $20 in Blizzard monies (one per winner). That's almost a $200 prize pool of raffles!
Whoa! I want one of those prizes! All you have to do is donate at least $5 to my fundraiser page before October 23rd, and you'll automatically be entered into the raffles you decide! Want to be extra generous and don't want to enter? That's perfectly fine with me, and up to you! Don't want to be entered into Blizzard games raffles because you think they make enough money? I agree, but hey... cosmetics, HotS heroes, and HearthStone cards are rad! Again, completely your decision. Just remember to enter your PA forum name/email address/desired raffles you wish to enter into the "special comments/notes" section when you donate the money. Otherwise, I'll just assume you'll want to be entered into all 4. If you have any questions about the event, prizes, raffles, my sanity? Feel free to ask!
That's all folks! Again, a very special thank you to everyone here for helping me in the past and continue to help me each time I perform one of these ridiculous marathons. I always question at the end of it if I'll do it again the following year, and each year I find myself coming right back to help benefit those poor kiddos. Thank you all for being so incredible generous without personal gain for yourselves. You're the best.
Alright. 3, 2, 1. Let's Jam!
Happy pay day everyone! 16 Days until Extra-Life!!

Also if anyone already has Amazon Prime, and does not play Hearthstone, it would be really cool if you could activate Twitch Prime for free and send me your Tyrande skin codes in a PM or over Steam. Apparently they're a hot commodity because Prime isn't available outside US, and I'd like to collect them from friends who don't want to use them to give them away randomly during Extra-Life. Thanks all

They're weird and hostile, sure, but many of them don't have arms or other obvious appendages and just bump into you to attack.
Then there are narrative issues, and this goes into early spoiler territory (big spoilers, to be sure). Suffice to say the story itself undercuts a lot of the tension:
SOMA is still a really good game, and it shows that Frictional has come a long way since the '06 tech demo for Penumbra. Just don't go in expecting Amnesia 2.
I feel like outside of @Stabbity Style getting Black Ops 2, this has always been bad. Like, the games are almost not worth the money you paid for them.

See above, what can I say I'm a gambler.
Just waiting on my code from LRG.
I've put a couple hundred hours into BL2, and I think this is the main thing I dislike about it. Just, the vast majority of the guns are really unstable and as a result don't feel very good to use.
I figured what the hell and went for it. Got the following just now:
Reign of Bullets
The Legend of Candlewind
Age of Fear
Rooks Keep
Action Alien
The Book of Desires
Incandescent
Spin Rush
It Came From Space and Ate Our Brains
I think I've only heard of the last one, but I don't know anything about any of them. I think I'll look them up before sullying my account with them.
edit: oops, Rise Battle Lines. Missed the 10th one.
IIRC, shooting sighted in increases projectile speed for non-hitscan weapons so with an elemental or Torgue shotgun you're more likely to land shots on what you're targeting when sighted in.

Happy pay day everyone! 16 Days until Extra-Life!!
After playing Black Ops 2, I can safely say that they're all garbage and totally not worth the money.
