Indiana (and Kentucky) were just being BLASTED on Twitter. Everyone calling us poor, uneducated, inbred, racist idiots...we were actually trending for getting mud thrown at us, and what can you say? That's the perception that the rest of the country has of us. Corn, meth & racism.
This is all I'm going to say about it because I hate politics (and agree it has no place in this thread), but it wasn't the rest of the country saying these things. It was the rest of the Left. You can see tons of this exact stuff in D&D right now. It's as racist as anything else I've heard this year. This is the very reason I hate politics.
Anywho, I finished Dying Light and I'm trying to think of a new game to play since I'll have some downtime with the wife going out of town a few days and the kids in school. How long is Blood Dragon? Been thinking about giving that one a go. but I'm not looking for something very long at the moment.
Play Blood Dragon. As I said, it's a much more focused experience than the mainline Far Cry games. My playtime for Blood Dragon reads 25 hours, less than half what I spent not finishing Far Cry 3.

Hmm, a little longer than I was looking for, but I did really enjoy FC3 and am a child of the 80's.

Ooh, and only 3GB, too. Downloading. Thanks!
For what it's worth, Blood Dragon only took me about 10 hours to finish. I'm not sure if I did every single thing, but I beat the game and got what I wanted out of it.
So, uh, I put up a giveaway for Dishonored the other day, I had preorder DH2 from gamesplanet, figured I should give away the key. I am reading on other sites that apparently you aren't meant to, that it'll return a "you need to own the base game" error, like it's a DLC or something.
So I had to cancel it. If anyone that entered it wants to attempt to redeem it under the understanding it might not work, just send me a PM, I'll just /random in a day or two, and will try to think of something else to give away in the meantime.
The good @Talus9952 sent me a little pick-me-up, which is quite needed after last night:
This actually does cheer me up a bit. Used to play a lot of Harvest Moon a couple console generations ago, and I've heard nothing but good things about this. Thanks a bunch, man!

Wow, that's... a shitty way for them to handle that. I, too, would have totally assumed the key could be given away. :?

I think at least some third party sellers did too. Some had really low prices on Dishonored 2 with no mention of the Dishonored 1 bonus so assume they were planning on parting it out to sell separately.

I mean, my assumption is just hearsay from what other people reported, so it might be nothing, might be retailer specific, but would rather not risk it, especially since Steamgifts automated system gets anal about making sure keys are redeemed and has banned accounts before.
It MIGHT work, I just don't want to fuck up someone's account if it doesn't.
Gotta give it up for @Talus9952! Out of nowhere I got a Steam key for Technobabylon. I've been absent from the Steam thread of late, so it was cool to be remembered and treated to a nice surprise! Looks like this will be totally up my alley. I played and enjoyed the first Blackwell game, and I'm a fan of cyberpunk. I also have some vacation time coming up, so I'm looking forward to digging in.

Look, I'll be honest with you. I don't know what these are. One of them has a unicorn with rainbows flowing from their butt. One of them is software made by iolo (no relation?). One of them is a bird crapping simulator. One of them is a 1+1=0 game. One of them is partially in another language. I don't know. I'm as confused as you are. It's that kind of a week.
EDIT: Played some Verdict Guilty, and this indie fighting game is a lot better than I expected. You can play as an alcoholic detective and there's a handcuff mechanic.
I've been absent from this thread for a bit, but I can't think of a better home for these games. Giveaways are open til Monday!
Personally, I'm debating between Dishonored 2 and Tyranny right now and it is very hard to choose. I loved the first Dishonored so that makes sense, but I love the idea of Tyranny and its setting and I liked Pillars a bunch, even though I lost the thread of it and found it hard to come back to. A tighter, more focused PoE sounds very cool.
I have strong, relatively well informed, political opinions. Even with five major parties in my country, none of them really represents me. I write emails, write letters, and vote after serious reflection in each election. The results are never as good as I hope, nor as bad as I fear.
While I'm not exactly the poster child of being on topic, I do try to stick to games and keep the OT to posts to ones that I think are entertaining. I do have conflicting opinions about the US election, but this isn't the place to discuss them.
Let's argue about games, thank @Drake for his reviews, and call bullshit on Isy when he complains about class being returned. Let's leave the politics for D&D.

What's everybody's thoughts on physical strategy guides for games? Are they even worth getting anymore, now that we can search for info on our phones?
I'm super tempted to the hardcover guide for Skyrim Special edition and a normal softcover for Witcher 3, even though I'm probably not going to play either any time soon, due to other stuff. I probably shouldn't spend anymore money this month, but I just wanted some opinions to justify myself if I decide against buying them.

more of a collectors item than an actual thing that is necessary.
i don't think strategy guides have been required since you got a free pack of microwave popcorn with your VHS rental.

the Interwebz have made them totally irrelevant, but personally, I love having physical copies for RPGs and open world games, still have my Majora's Mask guide. It's really more of a "are you a fanboy/girl?". Personally nowadays I only ever buy them when I find them used for a couple bucks at a Goodwill or garage sale etc., but I could see myself buying a Dark Souls guide at some point near or at cover price. They're also nice to have when you're bored to flip through and learn something new about one of your fav games. They can vary in quality a lot too, I like the ones packed with as much extras and bonus info as they can fit (love the ones with dev interviews). But yeah, they're totally unnecessary and not worth it if you're on a budget
The best strategy guide I ever read was one for Resident Evil 2 that was written by two people (one person wrote Claire's gameplay and one person wrote Leon's) who would occasionally insert passive aggressive insults toward the other writer in their sections.
Considering the lead times required to print and distribute strategy guides I can't imagine a modern one being that useful in an era where games aren't even finished until about two months after their release. Gamefaqs is hit or miss compared to a professionally written strategy guide, but on the upside it's free.

Gamefaqs seems to have seriously declined in the last few years.
Your average game specific PA thread is usually a better substitute when a game is fairly new.
Gamefaqs forums have always been complete trash, the only reason to go there is for the guides. That obscure late 90s CRPG you are playing through? Odds are there are three or four different FAQs or guides hosted there for you to peruse. The only downside is they are text only, which means if something needs to be seen visually to be easily understood you're at the mercy of the explanatory skills of the author.

Buying game guides in this day and age is idiotic.
That said, I picked up the hardcover guide for Skyrim at release and planned to wait to purchase the game it until it was $5. Unfortunately @Iolo ruined that plan. In actual practice, I used GameFAQs for planning my character, but I really enjoyed reading through it as well as having that guide as one of the very few gaming items on my bookshelves. The only other vidja book is the first part of the novelization of Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga. The game is one of my favourites of all time. The book is... well, it's a book.

I like the physical game bibles for Bethesda sized games. For anything else, there's the internet.
The one thing I hate is the rise of videos over words and pictures. I prefer people just show me the item or goals in a few screen shots rather than some video I have to load up while playing a game.

I hate this so much. Not just for videogames, but any sort of troubleshooting.
I need a ten second long explanation on [thing], but all I find are eight minute long videos that start with "Hey what's up youtube it's [literally no one cares] here with a tutorial video for [thing]" that runs like crap in the Steam browser.

I sometimes find myself thinking "I can read and analyze a text description at least 3 times as fast as you can flap your stupid gums" at something that's video only with no written component. I then imagine myself putting on a top hat and walking away as I close the tab and look for a better guide/article/whatever.
In other news, Dishonored 2 plays well so far but is definitely not optimized on PC. I require smoother frame rates for when I make a running jump at a guard that just discovered and then grab a leg to sever it at the thigh.
I use the heck out of GameFAQs and Playstationtrophies , less so guidebooks though I've bought a few over the years.
I prefer text explanations usually, but I don't mind videos when they're appropriate.
They're not always - I had someone link me a "here's how to do this fight in FFXIV" video where it was just a video of the fight set to a metal soundtrack with no comments on what was happening, those are the worst. I felt like I'd watched it and should know the fight but had no clue what I'd just watched.
I recently did a 4-part, 30-minute Getting Started in Bloodborne video series that I tried to make a good video for as don't think I could have done justice to it in text. basically a playthrough of the first section with frequent annotations to explain new things / why I was doing / what I was doing, all in real time and occasionally making fun of my lacking skillz.
Haha, absolutely with you guys on the long-winded video guides vs succinct, searchable text wordage. A strange change that over-complicates things, I find, yet seems to be really popular.

I'd take fixed-width, text-only guides any day over these steam "guides" that are just links to their LP.
