Sometimes when there is a ton of stuff going on, yes.

Game-breaking? No. It doesn't happen often enough as far as I've seen.

I've had the same problem. The game often slows down slightly when there are a ton of enemies on the screen, but during the fight you're talking about it really slowed down to a crawl. Even running to the other side of the ring, away from the action, didn't really improve the speed. Very unpleasant.

That being said, I love this game. I could play all day. . . .

You mean the bones you get from eating chicken and sheep? I've found no use for them yet, and I'm up to Chapter 5 of Mercedes' story (third character). They do boost Materials up by 3, though, so they do have some use.

Then I am going to assume that's what they're for, 'cause they're taking up space that I could be using for Eggs on Toast.

And I've noticed bones will drop in the underworld anyway so I can always farm them.

Everything brings Materials up by something. You don't NEED to carry absolutely everything. If you have no materials, just toss the bone. But some wilted or rotten fruits are needed for some mid-level recipes. You don't need bones for anything special. All junk should be for leveling up Materials.

Whilst I dislike sourpusses in game threads as much as the next guy, I need to know- does the game change in any substancial way mechanic-wise once you're done with Gwen? Because right now I can't stand the combat, and I don't want to go grind levels to get further just to realize it's more of the same. At least if I knew the other characters didn't feel so utterly useless...

I think people were saying that each character does different things. Mercedes flies and uses a ranged weapon, Oswald can turn into the black knight, etc.

Not sure if that's entirely accurate, but you get the point.

You can change the difficulty mid-game. And then just run through an area a few times and you'll have enough money to keep going. The mountains are good for money, as long as you can get good grades.

so im coming to not much enjoy the alchemy/food aspect of the game at all. i definitely appreciate the layers it adds to the gameplay, but i just do not enjoy planting seeds, mixing potions, and eating fruit whilst trying to beat the shit out of badass monsters. everything else is boss, so im just gonna play through on easy to enjoy all the cool design and animation, then call it a day.

man, the whole fruit thing makes the gameplay. thats a shame.

I like how they mixed anime with other large influences (mythology, colorist painting), but I wish they would give these influences equal weight, so I wouldnt have to look at little girl protagonists all day, for example.

yeah, it's clear that they wanted a huge emphasis not just on killing, but maintaining yourself and using items. i just really don't find it fun at all. beautiful to watch, though, so it's worth pushing through.

I thought it added a welcome degree of intricacy to the gameplay, although I can see how you would think its an awkward and boring way to do so. I just thought managing your various inventory items actually led to legitimate strategy, which made the game interesting.

I cant tell whether the story is stupid or interesting yet, however.

oh its not boring, but definitely awkward. it feels like the menu just takes too damn long to open, for one thing (probably intentional, but i still don't like it). of course, ive only been at it ~5 hours, so maybe i just need more time to grow into it.

i do like growing and then slaughtering sheep, though.

the story, so far, has been far too literal and straightforward. characters telling us, and other characters, all their innermost fears and desires, right up front. no subtext, no foreshadowing, just right upfront. not a bad story, just not really well written, i guess.

Eventually, Muggles don't do much for you in the way of health or XP. And with a little farming you can get a ton. I feed them to chickens at this point, unless I need them for a cafe/kitchen recipe. Good for upping materials too.

Not sure why they didn't just call them Mangoes however.

For myself it just feels awkward. Like they came up with the cyclical item menu and then hamfisted the alchemy system into it, rather than making said aspect separate (not helped by the lack of automatic sorting by type in bags). I'd expect a tooltip to tell me what the result of adding my chosen ingredient would be, not just what the thing does on its own; it would've saved me some frustration when I was starting out.

Mixing items in Powerstone 2 was a lot of fun because there was an element of discovery and risk/reward. I can't comment on how it was handled in Odin Sphere but it sounds really similar.

The tutorial bits pretty much explain everything essential (I guess them telling you that you can only equip one item at a time, that you're supposed to go back to grind by design, and just how many bags you can actually carry, isn't considered essential), you just need to really pay close attention. Especially the alchemy bits.

I generally like the Alchemy/plants aspect of the game. Most of the big fights have felt like very slightly controlled desperation on my part, where I managed to survive by killing enough underlings to get a napple at the right moment or quickly transmuted a napalm potion.

I'm in the middle of the second storyline, and am abusing the heck out of the alchemy parts. Basically, find some mulberry seeds, use photon release to grow them, and use two to raise a material by 10. Then use another mulberry, a bone, and a seed to make another material to 9. Then mix both, and you got a 90 material. Then mix that with whatever, releasing a ton of phozon.

Another handy trick is that napples take three bites to eat to the core, and you always get two when you plant a seed. So take two bites, then you can use the mostly eaten napple to raise a material to 5, while still getting a good chunk of HP experience.

And another thing thats handy is that most of the potions (Healer, Painkiller, antidote) will multiply a material by 2, so you can use it twice, then if you're having trouble getting a material's numbers higher, you can mix the potion with only one charge left to multiply the material.

I do worry that I spend way more time thinking about mixing stuff than combat most times.

I've been playing through this recently. Really dig the art style, though I keep having to wonder how they get their freak on when the guys are, I dunno, four or five times as large as the weemen.

It's pretty emo as well, but so far I dig it. I haven't gotten very far (A good friend bought me both Super Paper Mario and Guitar Hero 2 the other day), but what I've seen I dig. The game is hard, too. I'm not used to item whoring in an RPG, at least to the required levels of this game. So far, I make it a point to grow some mulberries on the difficult maps so I can heal myself without using my buns/cheese.

I dig it. Voice acting is a bit B grade in a few places, though, and the animation seems a bit stiff in some places, but the fact that it is gorgeous easily makes up for it. Took me a minute to get the level system figured out (Atlus didn't send me a book with it) but I think it's pretty good and offers an incentive to growing food.

Also, do you guys have this problem? It seems like the animation and the dialog/sound is a bit laggy. I'm assuming it is my beat up PS2. Just wondering if anyone else has this problem.

I've noticed a bunch of slowdown in the necropolis or whatever the undead world is. Also, during boss fights, obviously. But definititely not enough to be game-breaking. No problem with the sound too much.

The loading time gets a might too long during the pooka village, entering and leaving the cafe and restaurant.

I only really notice it during major conversations.

Well, you can't make anything you don't already have a recipe for, and the game does tell you the kind of potion you're going to get if you highlight a viable ingredient, so I'm not sure what you're complaining about.

Managing your inventory can be a bit of a pain in the ass, but you can sort all the items within a bag. Press R2, highlight the bag you want to sort, and press square.

Finally, for all you wondering how to maximize your materials and keep your inventory clean, here's a quick and easy way to make a Material90:
Creating a lvl. 90 material is a quick and easy way to gain experience, since crafting with a lvl. 90~99 material will yield a shit-ton of phozons (about 24, I think).

    Required ingredients: 2 lvl 0 materials, 3 mulberries, 4 assorted seeds/mandragoras

Step 1: Combine each material with a mulberry.
    2x (Material0 + Mulberry) = 2x Material5

Step 2: Combine one of the new materials with a mulberry to create a lvl. 10.
    Material5 + Mulberry = Material10

Step 3: Combine the remaining material 5 with four assorted seeds/mandragoras to create a lvl. 9.
    Material5 + 4x(seed/mandragora) = Material9

WARNING: Make sure that none of the mandragoras you mix will accidentally create a potion, since that will force you to start all over again.

Step 4: Combine the Material9 and Material10 to get a lvl. 90 material.
    Material9 + Material10 = Material90

    Also,
You can also multiply the value of any material by two if you combine it with a mixed potion (any potion should do, regardless of the number of uses left). Use this to quickly create a high-level material if you are desperate for inventory space/phozons and don't have the ingredients for the above recipe.
