Considering playing on Easy. I don't want to bother with difficulty.
Same, except I'm in Chapter 1. I lost to the dragon once, so I grinded a bit and beat it on my second go. The most annoying part about the game to me, so far, is when you turn on the PS2 and load -- fuck having to pick up the book first. Other than, I'm loving it. It's like a Tales of... gone wild.
Edit: I mean, it;s like Tales of Symphonia et al gone wild. For clarification.
man....this game is fucking awesome. I'm in chapter 4 as Valkyrie right now. It kinda just ramped up in difficulty, but the gameplay is fucking pwn. The visuals speak for themselves being that they are made of victory. I feel it's kinda a breath of fresh air for the genre. So, I'm quite pleased with my $40 purchase.
also, Cover art = win.

Snagged my preorder copy last night - my local Gamestop only got in 2 copies; both preorders.
Sadly, I got roped into some Crackdown and then some Starcraft with a buddy of mine so I never even got the chance to open the game.
Tonight when I get home, I'll have to swap out the Wii for the PS2 (again... damn I need a component switch).
When you go to use a material, you'll notice a number in the ring that pops up when you use it. That number is the number of the material you're using. When you highlight the next item to use in a combination, a second number/letter will appear. If it's a number, that means that your combination will yield a material of that number. If it's a letter, that means you will get that alchemy outcome (p for painkiller, h for healing potions, etc.).
Screw the spoiler, everyone needs to see this. The game really should have told you this in the tutorial.
This game is pretty brutal. I just beat the Chapter 4 boss and I barely made it.

Yeah, I went back to the Ringford Forest place to grind. Made 3 or 4 Healing Tonics, 2 Painkillers, 3 Napalms, and two of those awesome food items that have two parts, healing 300 and 500 HP.
I also finally used two Psypher Skills to double my attack power, and make an illusionary copy of myself that mimiked my attacks. Needless to say, that boss ate Psypher.
Up to Chapter 2 of Cornelius' tale. His double jump+Down+Square attack is kinda hard to use, especially since you have to hold Down to keep using it while pressing Left and Right to move.
I tried to get this game yesterday, but my normal EBgames and Best Buy didn't have any copies at all. I might check another one today.
Best Buy's web site doesn't even have an entry for it, but you might try a check availability search on EB's web site to see if anyone around you might have them.
The store next to my office had one copy left when I went in.
My local Gamestop didn't get these in until yesterday (Thursday) and they only got a few. I arrived just in time to snag the last one.
I've been playing all morning and having tons of fun. A couple of times when I went to save, though, I got the message that the save data had been corrupted (yikes). This wasn't a big deal since I just saved it again and double checked that the record was there before quitting, but I'd hate to lose my game data or the data for another game (if that's even possible). Has anyone else seen this happen? I'm saving on a virtual memory card on a PS3 hard drive.

I've been playing it on my old giant PS2 that I bought the January after launch, and I haven't had any problems. The only thing I could think to suggest would be that you make sure to always make two copies every time you save, just in case, and keep two sets of said two saves each.
Zimmydoom, Zimmydoom
Flew away in a balloon
Had sex with polar bears
While sitting in a reclining chair
Now there are Zim-Bear hybrids
Running around and clawing eyelids
Watch out, a Zim-Bear is about to have sex with yooooooou!
I got my copy today. What I played so far was pretty awesome. I'd still be playing it if it weren't for the fact that I'm in the middle of a Digital Devil Saga 2 playthrough.

Errrg, I think I've heard of people having problems with this on their PS3, to which Atlus responded 'guys it's a PS2 game PS3 compatibility isn't our problem'. Info probably from this forum somewhere... there were a ton of general 'my PS3 ate my PS2 saves!!!! WTF ARG' posts back when, dunno if a PS3 update addressed that yet. I don't have one.
Waiting on playing this, way into Etrian Odyssey right now.
Before I open it, how much do you think this game will be worth in about 5 or 10 years on eBay?
Nothing? I think if the demand is this high, the printings will be there.
The games that end up being valuable are the ones that are printed in small quantities, and people don't really get an interest in until years later (see Panzer Dragoon Saga, Suikoden II, Rez).
Erm...they should have provided you with a Material 2 in the Tutorial..
No, no material 2 ever dropped.

You can use pretty much any item to increase the level of the Material. Like a Mulberry Seed synthed with a Material 0 makes it a Material 1. Then just go it again and you have a Material 2. You can also synth 2 Materials together to get a Material with a number equal to the two numbers multiplied. So a 3 and 5 net you a 15. The 10s digit only increases the amount of Phozons released from the synthed item. The higher the 10s digit, the more Phozons, naturally.
I'm playing on hard right now, just beat Belial and having a great time. It's not too difficult. As long as I don't make stupid mistakes, I've been fine.

Materials are kinda complicated in that way.
It won't let me synth any thing. So I'm kinda boned
Damn this month has been nasty for RPGs/RPGish games
.hack, Dawn of Mana, Odin Sphere, Atelier Iris 3...
Luckily for my wallet, half of those are crap.
I was rather surprised at the games that turned out to be crap. I guess I should have expected Dawn of Mana to be botched, but it still took me off guard. Good thing I hadn't been thinking too hard about buying it.

Seriously, have there been a decent Mana game since the third one?

I liked Sword of Mana. The DS one looked meh to be, but then again, it seemed like more of the same.
And my Odin Sphere reserve should be waiting, but I haven't gotten it yet.
The first unicorn knight fucked me up royally for a good half an hour.
"Use the napalm to defeat him!"
Hi it doesn't do any damage.
That's odd. Are you sure you're hitting him? It won't do an extreme amount of damage, but it should give him Lv 2 or Lv 3 burns to eat his health away.

If you throw it as he's running away, the flame trail will continuously burn him. Took him down to less than a quarter of his life left.
Changing gears for a bit: I'm playing as Gwendolyn. I tried to level up and farm before going to the boss in the woods. The problem was that I couldn't find any substantial enemies after I had cleared the levels out. One time I found 3 or 4 frogs, but they only spit out 7 Phozons, and I wasted a Muggle Seed. Is the game just that unforgiving? Do I have to manage my farming and such at all times?
Also: When the fuck do I get better bags? This is ridiculous.

Sorry, but that's the hard part. You've gotta have the map and go to an area with lots of stars or possibly a boss to guarantee Phozons. Also, wait until you're growing a seed to perform alchemy, so the phozon runoff go to the seed.
Don't bother with multiplying the Materials unless you really, really know what you're doing. (I know I don't.)
yeah, I somehow have a Material 11 in my bag, but I can't use it for anything. If I try to mix it with an Onionette to make an antidote, I just get a material 12 instead. Can I use this thing or should I just sell it?
I'm currently redoing the entire forest sequence (already beat the whole level once) so I can afford to buy the ring that makes you immune to cold. That seems like it would annoy the shit out of me.
