Redirecting Download in Windows XP Home???

Okay, so here's my dilema:

I have very little memory/storage on my laptop. I couldv'e already bought some components to help this, but I'm really trying to save up for the MAJOR upgrades I truly want. I don't want to settle. So, in the mean time I've been running and storing things off an external hard drive that I have. It's been helping alot.

My only issue is: on SOME things that I download and install, it will ask me which directory I want to put it in... and for those I choose my external hard drive... But what about when it doesn't give you the option of telling it where to go? Is there a way to change some default setting somewhere that will make things like this automatically download and install to the hard drive I want it to, even if it doesn't prompt me for my preferance?

PLEASE HELP!

    Jesus, patience please.

Most programs have the option to tell them where to install, but not all installers make it obvious. Sometimes you have to hit "change..." somewhere along the line or do a custom install to even get the option. A few things (like ActiveX controls) probably are going to install on your C drive. What sorts of programs are we talking about here?

I wasn't being impatient... I was actually fearful that it was tough to do.

One was a torrent downloader, and the other was MSN messenger. With the messenger one I have downloaded, deleted, and downloaded again looking for something like that along the way, but it gives no option for selecting where to put it. So I deleted it again. :P

MSN Messenger will probably want to install to the drive where the Windows installation is. You could try a third-party messenger like Trillian or Miranda.
For torrents, I use µTorrent. Just download the standalone version. It's just one file. Place it and run it from wherever you what.

I don't believe it - I'm on my THIRD PS3, and my FIRST XBOX360. What the heck?
