I got this from Gamefly on Friday and am having a blast with it. I'm on PS4 and level 22.
Grab some PS4 PAX guardians to play the story missions with, it will improve the experience exponentially.
I won't be powerleveled though, right? I really like to get things done by myself.
Speaking of which... I see a lot of level 40s hanging around the 12ish story areas. Is there a reason for that?
I mean...they'll probably slaughter everything, but I don't think you'll level up faster except by virtue of the fact that you'll be completing story missions faster because 3 guardians is objectively better than 1 guardian.
The best way to see how it works is to take your level 20 self and go patrol back in in the Cosmodrome, against level 4 enemies. They can still kill ya, if you're not paying attention, and all the rewards are based on *your* level, not the area's (up to certain caps you are nowhere near yet), or are level-agnostic.

Previous missions aren't necessarily rolfstomps. You have a whole lot more leaway to screw around but there are some firm caps where your effectiveness/resistance gets capped. The only thing have more guardians with you would be to make screws ups a lot less likely and let you play on Hard mode but that comes with bonus XP which I don't think they want.
I personally wouldn't worry about bonus XP. Level is kinda irrelevant if it's not 40. You shouldn't really be underleveled for anything if you do them in order.
Okay that is pretty cool. I noticed that when I was doing PVP. I was feeling smug as fuck when I was level 12 and topping the charts against level 40s.
Yeah, default PVP is a fair playing field. Levels and Light don't matter, outside special, clearly-marked events. Perks on gear matters, though, and purple / gold gear just has more perks.
So it's much less impressive than I told myself. Boourns.
It's still pretty impressive considering you can't use any of the real meta weapons and you probably haven't unlocked the real interesting perks in your subclass yet.

... A little better, thanks.
How do subclasses work? I found out that when you level it doesn't necessarily give you another point to put into your subclass... XP you gained goes towards your subclass right? Is there any reason to level the initial class? For example I started as a Warlock that had... Voidwalker I think? And then I got the next one at 15 that was a fire one (which is a lot more fun to play). Should I be switching between the two?

Eventually you'll want all 3 (you won't unlock the 3rd until sometime in the 3rd expansion story) subclasses maxed out just for flexibility, but go for whichever you find the most fun first. Once it is maxed you can also keep playing as that one and just swap to one of the others before turning in a bounty to get the xp twords it and then swap back for more killing with your favorite as it can be depressing to have one maxed and then swap to a unleveled one that doesn't have its abilities unlocked yet.
Yeah I learned the hard way. I leveled to 15 while in PVP. Switched to the new class and then queued up for the next match only to find out that I had no grenades or powers.
So it's much less impressive than I told myself. Boourns.

All of them are powerful. There's no tiers really, just different specs. Recommended is that you stick with one until you finish it, then switch to another one. When you're getting close to done, funnel all bounty XP into the next one you're going to do, to unlock the very basic abilities right away.

I main a Warlock and Voidwalker is my jam. I spend the whole time in the current raid as a Voidwalker, but in the previous raid I actually used all three Warlock subclasses during it. Play whatever feels most fun now. When you want to start leveling a new subclass, the best way is to equip it before turning in a bunch of bounties, that way all the XP gets applied to your new subclass and you don't have to worry about using it while it's still weak.

You're correct, XP goes directly into your subclass which unlocks abilities over time, as opposed to a level/point system.
Subclasses differ based primarily on Super, grenade, and melee abilities, as well as a few passive buffs. They are all designed to be roughly equal in strength; while some may be more useful in particular situations (e.g. add clearing vs. boss DPS vs. PvP), all of them are completely viable for whatever activity you are doing. So basically, you can play however you like, whether it's switching up often or just picking a favorite. (Though it does kinda behoove you to stay with one long enough to unlock the more interesting abilities.)
My quick-and-dirty rundown of Warlock subclasses:
Voidwalker
- Super: throws a giant exploding ball of pain
- Best grenades
- Offense-oriented
Sunsinger
- Super: go Super-Saiyan on espresso, watch world burn
- Strong passive abilities
- Can resurrect after death
Stormcaller
- Super: Emperor Palpatine on roller-skates
- Crazy melee range
- Great against adds, and in PvP
@Local H Jay how do you find running NLB and a shottie? Is that specifically better for Trials?
I enjoy using NLB and Party Crasher. It's good because I can expend all 12 shots and not worry about being out of sniper ammo. I wouldn't recommend doing that loadout unless you learn the kinks of NLB, like the dash cancel and the 'jam'. Ideally you won't need much shotgun ammo because it should be 1-2 shots tops to kill someone.
Equally effective is Universal Remote and preferred snipers; if you find yourself always low on shotty ammo, UR is the answer. In Trials, special ammo can be scarce. Getting essentially bottomless special is definitely one of the strengths of NLB/UR.
Outside of Trials? It's a fine loadout either way, but a reliable Pulse, Scout or Auto will allow you fight mid-range and more than one target. OHKO guns like snipers and shotties are more useful in Trials so you can quickly put down a body and defend it, either up close or far away.
NLB is a ton of fun to use once you get used to it, honestly I started using it as a joke and it became one of my go-to weapons for Trials and IB. Definitely mess with it and see how you do.
Thanks, I will! It looks super fun and I keep seeing dudes over there that I would love to tag in one shot but don't have any way to; I've already got a snap-shot But Not Forgotten that I've been thinking about trying but I really want a mid-range OHK, not the traditional long shot sniping. Too many things to try, too little time for me to play.
Also me giving too many shits about my overall k/d, I'm this close to being a solid 1.

I am so TRIGGERED by all the salt around match making right now. I am probably going to produce a rant.
My preference for Warlock subclass switches as time goes on, but right now I am heavily into voidwalker.
Axion bolt is so good in crucible. I love tossing one, and then shooting the enemy as they run. That grenade is like a hound; "Go get em' boy!".
Novabomb, the one that splits into three projectiles, is also amazing. The area you can hit is so wide. You can arc it around corners, over walls. If you toss it from a far distance the projectiles split up to cover a large area.
The melee, eh, I like sunsinger melee with the shield better, but it is still good. I'm using Ophidian Aspect which enhances it. I'm not actually sure how it enhances it. But it does.

It gives "The Hunger" perk for free so you can choose Annihilate (bigger Nova Bomb and grenade explosions, my choice) or Angry Magic (Nova Bomb tracks, +1 Armor) instead.
Oh my god, fuck Trials cheaters, seriously. Some assholes kick Jay from the match, then proceed to teabag us.
(they had a history of "incomplete" Trials matches, so they were definitely cheating)

Sorry to hear that Arteen, remember to report them both through the game (on Bungies site if they left the match early, which cheaters usually do) and to Microsoft directly too.
That wasnt a lot of Trials I played this week due to various obligations, hoping to play some next week. (without cheating scum preferably)
Flawless with Booker and Zombie Ghandi!
Was a very hard fought victory, with several disappointing losses beforehand. We even lost out on game 5, but pushed through to see the Lighthouse.
I got a ...3rd Adept Blind Perdition (399), 400 Warlock boots, and yet another ornament.
Finally. It has been a long, hard road in Year 3, but I'm graced by the light of the sun once more.
After a hell of a lot of cards, many ending at 7 or 8 wins in 4/5 matches, finally I see the Lighthouse once more. After last nights double-loss at 8-0, and us losing on win 5, it was great for this to happen.
Booker and Jay did a lot of the heavy lifting on the previous cards, but I felt I had some solid games on this one, and felt good about getting a double kill to lock the last round. Jay's double-headshot NLB was the highlight, and I'll say it pushed our morale into overdrive for the victory.
Playing a bunch of Trials this week reminded me that for all the frustrations the mode can bring, it's also just damn solid fun a lot of the time. It's hard to beat the rush and thrill of competition, and it makes you up your communication and awareness so much higher. I've slowly dragged myself to positive K/D and decent competency, but I still wish the mode were different. Less punishing for losses, less incentive for the cheaters, and more open to more players. A mode where you can get more of the custom rewards, even if it takes longer, would likely drive more people to it. Arteen's vision of the mode being win-driven, with wins cancelling losses, is something I'd like to see. Even if the Lighthouse remains a place for success, the mode itself can use tweaks to make it more enjoyable, and likely increase the playerbase.
It's been a grand run this weekend. I won't have as much time in future weekends, but damn if I won't be right back in for more.
