John Scalzi described the GOP Primary as a "howling sampler box of Dunning-Kruger" and I haven't seen a better description yet.

That seems so long ago, I'd forgotten all about it.

That was a lot of real dumb answers.

So far, I'm pretty sure you and me represent her ceiling in Oklahoma. Although it would be pretty great to wake up tomorrow to discover that the entire state had reverted to its We Belong to the Land socialist roots.
The nice part of having to go to Norman to vote tomorrow is that I am gonna be in, probably, the single most liberal voting district in the state so it shouldn't be too soul draining

True. As long as you're relatively close to campus. I imagine things get pretty Trumpy on the far side of I-35.

It's not quite our election, but it's close enough:

That's perfect, like Donald Trump, Armstrong comes out and nobodies expecting much, but suddenly he's kicking ass in the primaries and head-butting Mitt Romney's titanium skullplate and shit gets serious when you thought it was a forgone conclusion.

I'm in upperclass white suburbia so it's pretty red. I work a little ways south where it's more rural and it's actually more democratic

I live right on the Iowa/Illinois border, and both sides are pretty blue. We're not very far removed from GOP country, but both Scott County in Iowa and Rock Island County in Illinois are pretty reliable territory for Democrats. I mean, there are a fair number of Republicans here, too, it's not Philadelphia or New York or Chicago, by any stretch, but you know. Still seeing way more Trump signs than I'm especially comfortable with, but there's one house near where I work that's got so many Democrat signs that it's kind of hard to tell where the house is? So it's a mix.

it's still kind of nuts how people are like "the media is smearing Donald Trump! hillary's ads are vile!" and like, 90% of the time it's like, "here's some text of what trump said at a rally," followed by "well that's probably not what he meant what's it like in context," followed by "oh shit it's actually worse than I expected"

Well, sure, the Media is just reporting what Trump actually said, but I haven't seen them report about an email that someone BCCd Hillary on where they talked about a work of art that could be, if it were to instead of being art, not be art, could be seen as satanic in nature! And they didn't even give any coverage about how terrible Hillary was for that! I only know about it because it was on redstate, breitbart, rated false on Snopes, pinned on /r/t_d, r/pol, r/conservative, and satanhillary.ru!

    Biased!

Populism isn't entirely a bad thing. Nor is it entirely a good thing. The whole "most progressive platform of all time" thing? That's appealing to populism. Getting money out of politics is populism. Democracy is populism.

Now, right wing populism? That's Goddamn terrifying.

One guy at my shop who's super anti-Hillary actually said he wouldn't have minded if Bernie became president. Not that he would have voted for him but "at least he's not a criminal".

He's probably a liar. If Bernie was the nominee GOP clowns would be saying they could have voted for Hillary at least she's not a socialist.

I think he was being honest.

I think he's being honest about what he thinks he would do but completely wrong about what he actually would do. I remember only two years ago all the people I know around here who are now talking about how Hilary and Bill are the worst were talking about how Bill Clinton was the last good president we had. Some people have no idea how much the way politicians are reported on effects their opinion.

As soon as the media decided that pandering to demographics was okay it was all over. Finally, dismissing unpleasant facts of reality in exchange for what makes you feel good wasn't just for the insane and the wealthy. Any ordinary person could find a voice with some veneer of "authority" to tell them what they wanted to hear. Now it's okay for anyone to just decide what they want to believe and nothing need ever challenge that again.

This is the world we live in now and you might as well figure out a way to deal with it, but I don't think it's ever going back.

this article reminded me of how strange I thought it was that Jill Stein isn't on the NC ballot. seems like the powers-that-be here would want her siphoning off vote from Clinton

stranger still, she is apparently the only valid write-in in the state. they could've just put her name there with no functional difference

North Carolina has one of the most restrictive ballot-access laws in the nation. The state requires a third party or independent candidate to collect 90,000 petition signatures by May 15 from registered voters just to get on the ballot, while most states require tens of thousands fewer signatures.

The North Carolina Green Party submitted over 10,000 signatures May 15.

I want too many threads I've written in I have pointed out that blacklivesmatter uses that very short name because the 24-hour News Network won't pay attention to anything longer than that. As soon as they start saying something accurate and deep about the problems of this country without related to Just One race, the News Network is already moving on to some other story, some other gorilla getting shot, something about Jenner's new hair color.

Short and sweet keeps the media's attention.

Well, the text to speech function on my phone it's surprisingly accurate today.

I was so into the highlander TV show you guys

like I was into the highlander tv show without having seen the highlander movies

God do I wish they would reboot that series.

Like especially in modern times. Let's go over the kinds of surveillance state we live in. Think about it, dudes fucking having sword fights out in the middle of a city and chopping off heads? Yeah about 10 cameras caught that shit dumbasses, how we gonna keep keeping that secret?

A fucking gathering? Holy shit so many cops, so fucking fast.

You could most likely actually make a decent series out of it given a halfway competent set of writers.

The reason they never went into that stuff in the show is that if you start doing so it's all the show can be about. So no police ever call to ask Duncan about local beheadings.

Exactly the point, make it about that, make the kid he finds in his gallery some kind of techno whiz that initially helps him with his tons of footage of his first quickening in decades problem. Then dial up the police pressure through the first season or two until you find out that the main investigator is an immortal that hadn't yet had their first death. You can still run the same episodic pieces that merely depend upon an immortal main character they just happen to be bottle episodes that exist outside the being investigated by the police episodes.

Use the surveillance like practical holy ground. Dissuade other immortals from attacking you by pointing out the watching eyes

Edit: I may have put more thought into this over the years than is necessary.
Well, The Watchers were a secret international organization hellbent on making sure that no one on the planet learned about Immortals. So I'd imagine they'd be the antagonists in the reboot.

    I found it oddly reassuring
the head-in-the-sand attitude about climate change that has hung over most of the elections I've watched this year - and certainly envelopes all Trump supporters - is frankly more alarming, on aggregate, than Trump himself

I guess it is a character flaw that I look for the best in people, but If I had such a rabid desire to see other people be miserable in the long term, (beyond the transitory schadenfreude of lol #zoelwasright) and so little faith in the notion that people have redeeming qualities.

Well, I don't honestly think I'd be able to function in daily life, or for that matter a reason to avoid ennui.

A magician gives you a ring that, when worn, will let you see the world as it truly is.
However, the ring will never leave your finger, and you will be unable to ever describe to another living person what you see.
