Honestly, I was blown away by the feel, look, and general tone of Shadow of Mordor, so I put that. I will note that many games that are supposed to "get" you with a plot twist are the ones I see coming from a mile and a half. It's the games that I expect little of that actually get a "holy shit, really?" out of me.

@spoit gifted me Life is Strange Complete Season after I talked about not having time to play it so I was going to pass on it. I thought having tghe first episode kept me safe from getting gifted it but I guess they fixed that! Thanks spoity, darling

The “I'm Not Crying, There's Something In My Eye” Award — The Banner Saga
The “Just 5 More Minutes” Award — Stardew Valley (In this case, more like "I'm up now and I know it just saved but I might just go and water the crops and pop to the shop and stalk someone and and..."
The “Whoooaaaaaaa, dude!” Award — The Walking Dead
The “I Thought This Game Was Cool Before It Won An Award” Award — Sunless Sea
I understand the appeal of those games but if the art style only made them look a little older, I might test them on my pc.
The virtual cop one I'm Just gluing to watch a YouTube video of.
Oh, that's my bad then. I assumed you were making a Mirai reference. Her skirt is apparently a portal to some sort of extradimensional heavy weapons locker.
Award picks, most of them probably very pedestrian. Which is surprising as there are no walking simulators. Heeeeey-OH!
"Test of Time"
Half-Life 2, for being the only single player game I've played four times through despite it pretty much playing exactly the same every time.
"I'm Not Crying"
planetarian ~the reverie of a little planet~, for stabbing you with the feels over and over and over until you are out of places to stab
"Just 5 More Minutes"
Everquest. Christ, just going to the store page for long enough to nominate it had me wanting to reinstall and play a little bit. But I know what happens when I do that.
"Whoooaaaaaa, dude!"
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. "Hey, a nuke went off. How am I going to get out of th... oh."
"Villain most in need of a hug"
F.E.A.R. Alma really needs a hug.
"Game Within a Game"
Blades of Time, for having a multiplayer mode bearing zero resemblance to the single player game and which had me addicted for days.
"I thought this game was cool before it won an award"
Bulletstorm. This was a tough one because I always play games late, but I decided to redefine it as "before it got remastered for current-gen" and Bulletstorm is getting a wonderfully-unexpected remaster soon.
"Best Use of a Farm Animal"
Sakura Dungeon, for ABYSSAL COW
And finally,
"Most Deserving of a Sequel"
like I need to put a game title here.
Whew...it's been awhile, hasn't Steam Thread? Good to see you all again.
Before i get into things, let me preface, if apropos of nothing, fuck Captcha, i mean, right where it hurts.
See, i wanted to set up a SteamGifts contesting thing, but...i cannae log into the damned thing, because Captcha...fucking Captcha.
Anyways, longish story time?
So...recently i've been doing a Japanese language Let's Play of BoI: Afterbirth, yeah? It's been a lot of fun, if kinda stressful, but mostly a lot of fun. i...i'm not really someone who puts myself out in public, so this has been a big step for me. It's even led me to start up another series for LittleBigPlanet, and has been, generally, a big thing for me. Even Honeybunny's happy that i'm being a little more active in my life, so...a lot of happiness.
And i owe a great debt for all of this to you lot. i wouldn't have found Isaac, probably, if it hadn't been for hanging out in this thread, is all.
So...i'm up to 80some videos now (though only 31are public at the moment, i'm doing a one-a-day update schedule). i figured, as a thank you, i'd toss a contest y'all's way...except...Captcha.
So...what we're going to do. Anyone who wants a copy of Rebirth and Afterbirth, drop me a PM in the next 5days. i'll roll a d-whatever (depending on how many people get in touch) at the end, and whomever the die favours will get a free copy of both. Afterbirth+ is on the way soon, too...i'll probably give away a few copies of that too, when it comes around, but y'all want to get in on the almost groundfloor early, right?
Thanks so much, everyone. i might be spending all my time console gaming these days, but you still get all my love that i'm not giving to Honeybunny.
My whoa dude was Just Cause 3, because "whoa" is the precise feeling I had the first time I ziplined over a ridge and then transitioned into the wingsuit and came over the crest to see a huge valley open up below me while I just glided through it.
Game within a game was Doom 3, because I thought Super Turkey Puncher 3 was great (and relevant since tomorrow is Thanksgiving).

My "We Didn't Think Of Everything Award" category suggestion for Mass effect 2 is "Come back to Steam, EA!"
Portal 2 for The “Test of Time” Award
To the Moon for The “I'm Not Crying, There's Something In My Eye” Award
Skyrim for The “Just 5 More Minutes” Award
Tales from the Borderlands for The “Whoooaaaaaaa, dude!” Award
Saints Row IV for The “Game Within A Game” Award
I know its cheating to include a game from the same series, but I also chose Saints Row The Third for “I Thought This Game Was Cool Before It Won An Award”
South Park Stick of Truth for The “Best Use Of A Farm Animal” Award
Left 4 Dead 2 for The “Villain Most In Need Of A Hug” Award
Game withing a game, I'd vote for Final Fantasy 7.
I've spent a lot of time @ the Gold Saucer.
Now, not all the mini-games are super involving, but they are still very 'mini'.
Lets see if I can recall the games:
G-Bike
Snowboarding
Submarine
Arm Wrestling
Basketball Shooting
Wonder Catcher
Mog House
3D Battle
There was also chocobo breeding, betting, and racing.
Oh and don't forget the Fort Condor mini-game thing outside the Gold Saucer.
Some people played Cool Boarders, I played FF7 snowboarding.
I had one save that was just for the golden saucer.
I beat the game, collected knights of the round, defeated Ruby and Emerald. But still, there was one Save slot that just Cloud in the Golden Saucer, playing snowboarding for hours like the world want coming to an end.
... And now I'm downloading FF7. I think my save is pretty close to the Golden Saucer.

Give it like 15-20 minutes, and tell me its not the most engaging thing you've ever seen. You'll note, I didnt say the greatest game. It is just.. "Test of Time"
To Terraria. I don't think of any of the games in my steam library as 'old', but this is a game I've started playing again more times than anything else on that list so...
"I'm Not Crying"
To Valiant Hearts.
"Just 5 More Minutes"
To Civilization, because it's the 'one more turn' of 'one more turn games'.
"Whoooaaaaaa, dude!"
To To the Moon, because that one thing right at the very end.
"Villain most in need of a hug"
To Far Cry 3, but only the first half.
"Game Within a Game"
To Pony Island. I don't think that's exactly what that award was going for, but it certainly deserves it more than anything else I can think of.
"I thought this game was cool before it won an award"
To Life is Strange, because it's the only game I've played recently that I picked up before any of my friends did, and because the nature of the game made getting the chance to react to their playthroughs a boon.
"Best Use of a Farm Animal"
To Hatoful Boyfriend. I don't know if pigeons really count, but hey.
I'm trying to decide between empyrion or 7 days to die for a crafting/survival sim. anything drastically wrong with either to knock it out of contention?
Couple thoughts; 7 Days is probably the more well rounded of the two at the moment. I think it's further along in development and has more content/is more balanced based on what I've seen/heard from others who have played it. I play a lot of Empyrion but most of my time is spent in Creative mode building things. The actual gameplay is somewhat lacking at the moment. The developers are making good progress but if you're looking for gameplay I'd recommend 7 Days instead. I will also bring up another most excellent crafting/survival sim: Subnautica. It's a gorgeous game and I had a lot of fun with it and that was before they patched in a whole bunch of stuff. I stopped playing because I didn't want to burn out on it but I definitely plan on going back to this and putting a lot more time into it once it hits release mode.
I used my write in category to nominate Subnautica for the Jules Verne Award. :P

StarCrawlers is a game I've had for a while. It's an Early Access game so I had only fired it up once or twice to see the basics. I liked what I saw but figured I'd let it bake and check it out again closer to launch. Recently the announced plans to launch the game in the spring. This is a game that I've seen update a decent bit, at least once every couple of weeks. Usually more often and the changelogs were always full of tantalizing tidbits. Gear system upgrades and refinements. Procedurally generated jobs (that are pretty sweet and fun to play) hooked into a faction system with storyline repercussions. Cool as fuck handcrafted story missions. A clever turn based combat system with an innovative use of time units and initiative. Classes with deep skill trees. All in a classic gridder format of dungeon crawling turn based combat and deep party management. The sci fi is a fun, crunchy cartoony vibe. Very much an 80s/90s Saturday morning kind of thing. The art nails the gritty setting while staying easy on the eyes and fun to look at. Rebels and misfits on the fringe of space taking on odd dirty jobs in dangerous and remote places.
It pretty much ate close to eight hours of my day. I can tell I'll be thinking about it during Thanksgiving stuff. It's still not quite finished. They are holding the bulk of the story content for release. There are still a few tidbits left for them to hit with the factions system. But it's already a complete game. The basic gameplay loop with the job board and the faction system providing loot heavy procedurally generated dungeon crawling is something I can see myself playing with basically forever. Apparently it's also getting a pretty deep handcrafted story that plays off the factions system and such. If that delivers it will be a savory gravy for a game that is already pretty solid. If you like the format of gridder/Wizardry style turn based RPGs and are hungry for sci fi RPGs in general this is a really nice one. A real modern approach to classic concepts. It's scratching all kinds spots in vigorous new ways.
Check out this soundtrack preview, the music is tasty. It also shows off the game and it's cool aesthetic and impressive environments.
