Currently derping my way up the ladder with Skycragagagaggro; seen a lot of saucy brews along the way, as well as enough Sandstorm Titan that I can't confidently run 4 Permafrost. While this deck seems easily countered within the context of a given meta, I'm a little surprised this 4/2 Charge, Overwhelm Yeti has apparently survived a handful of balance passes.
If sandstorm exists to push midrange time, champ of fury is there to push skycraggro.
That may be true, but 4 power and Charge on a two-drop is a developmental decision that seems more problematic in the long term due to how it can affect player perceptions of future cards. As such, I wouldn't be surprised if it gets adjusted, much like how Champ of Stonescar and Champ of Feln got hit. And those are still VERY playable.
But that all said, I didn't play for pretty much the entire span between Omens and Dusk Road, so I may have missed the extent with which the meta demands Champ of Fury aka Super Jund Hackblade.

Hol' up, Stonescar and Feln champs used to be better? I was just thinking the Feln champ could really use shifting the abilities around so that flying and aegis are separate.
Breezed through Gold with a 72% win rate; 99.9% of my losses were to Sandy T.dek, usually of the Praxis Big Stuff variety. Eventually started running the oft forgotten Polymorph and managed to beat that damn Titan a couple times.
Then I hopped into draft and snap 1-3'd with a hideous Combrei pile. Managed to lose to some goober running Electropy (and some other jank I can't remember), but they had two of the 4/4 Flier that stuns 2 units and the 4/5 Overwhelm + Killer Unseen, so Electropy was just rub-ins I guess.
While I was mostly just playing Constructed during the last week of the season, I don't think I encountered much "true" Armory, just variations on the classic "Icaria Blue" model of Control.

I said 'fuck it' and made a shitty armor list without Tavrods or Daishos and won like four straight just from hitting people in the face with Sword of Icaria. Relic Weapons are so insanely punishing for decks that don't develop the board.

of course they had to revenge a makto to block with :c

I think I hate auric runehammer more than anything else in this game
So I'm about 8 hours into the game. I've completed the free campaigns, done a few gauntlets (haven't won any yet), and have a free forge ticket. I have 1500 shiftstone, 5000 gold, and no idea what 90% of the cards do. What should I be doing next?

Play gauntlet/forge until you hit masters to build up your card collection.
Play the puzzles, you get gold for completing them and they teach you a lot of card interactions.
Look around at https://rngeternal.com/tier_list/ for a deck that looks interesting without too many legendaries in it to you and build towards it.
I think you just go up a rank whenever you finish one. So if you beat the Gauntlet boss it'll have a little animation saying you've reached Silver (and you get special chest when that happens).
In other news, I love teaching Feln players than Annihilate doesn't work on Calderan Cradle's dragons c:
Each time you beat a run (defeat final boss for gauntlet, 7 wins for forge) you go up in rank, in the top left corner of the gauntlet/forge page it shows a little rank icon.
But you'll also just know when you reach masters as it will take a while and you remember beating final bosses.
The reason to keep going until masters is that you get a special rank up chest with increased rewards (if you look at the guantlet/forge page, it's the sand/black/gold insignias chest in the front).
Do ranked every day until you get your First Win of the Day bonus, as that's a gold chest which comes with a card pack. At low ranks it shouldn't take you too many games to get a win, even with the starting collection.
Although not amazing, the decks do technically contain more rares than you would normally get for your gold price, so in abstract they can be more "worth it" than random boosters.
I would probably call Praxis Impulse, Skycrag Fury, and Company of Steel the only ones I would consider though.

@Marty81 - I'd suggest picking your two favourite factions, and then build a deck with the best cards you have in those factions. Fire and Justice are a good place to start, with efficient Warcry creatures, removal and combat tricks. Just make sure you have a good curve.
This should get you a couple of ranks in Gauntlet, and every time you play Forge you can upgrade a deck and keep going.

I won my free forge run and leveled up to bronze. Hooray! Does that mean the cards that I'll see in future forge runs will be a little better, or do the enemies just get harder?
Also I guess I should be saving my gold for the adventures, huh? I don't see any other free way to get the cards in them.

The opposing decks will get progressively stronger.

But I won't be offered any better cards?
Does it make sense to go 6 wins and then concede to the last boss to keep things easy for future run harvesting then?

No, you want 7 wins for the upgrade rank chest.
Difficulty also goes up with your hidden MMR and number of wins overall so just conceding the last boss / 7th win doesn't do much to help.

I don't think they're capping the quality of the cards you get at the start.

My upgrade chest was just 1000 gold and a pack. Not sure if that's worth the permanent increase in difficulty. Err, actually, is it possible to get demoted in any of the single player experiences?
Thank you all for all the help, btw. The new player experience is a tad overwhelming.

It's not possible to get demoted in single-player, but the single-player ranks do reset with the release of every expansion (which just happened like two weeks ago). Getting those rewards is like... kinda the point of the modes? I suppose if you like playing it the way it is you can sit on it if you like, but you'll get cards for ranked slower if that was your ultimate goal.
I think at least in Gauntlet the enemy will get better and better cards if you keep winning either way, so trying to stay at a low rank is kinda pointless. In general it's probably better to play vs people anyway for the chests unless you have some specific gauntlet grinding deck.
Forge is the same, even if you drop at 6 wins the difficulty will still go up, maybe just slightly slower.
Number of wins and hidden MMR weigh heavier then your actual rank ATM.
I remember someone doing some testing and if you go multiple no win runs it will drop the difficulty down, but that's a lot of wasted gold to maybe make it easier temporarily.

not really, the decks aren't very good.
They're awful. Spend your gold on forges and drafts
