So finally managed to get in and after tinkering with the character customization, was finally happy, started and then the game chucked all my appearance choices out and made me Default Man.
@Dr. Chaos you can change your appearance for free in town, the NPC that does it is a bald guy in a purple suit just to the right when you come into town near the stairs. Still sucks that it just set you to default though, havn't really heard that issue before.

i actually really like the blast hammer so far, but i haven't managed to find out how to unlock axe/pike yet.
i assume "keep doing quests," because that's what the in-game thing says.
once i figured out quick reload and the forward blast-leap, i've been very mobile and also high-damage.
i like the jump -> headsmash approach, feels beautiful. the weapon is a really interesting hybrid of monhun's hammer and gunlance.
i'm still kinda looking for the GS equivalent. is it Axe? it's gotta be Axe.
this game is less... intimidating? than monster hunter. you feel much less squishy, and there are less animation locks.
i've been playing radically differently than i normally do in monhun, just running up and jamming damage when i can.
also uh, this game is actually pretty good, and i like it!
i accidentally played for three hours last night, after getting in around midnight pst.
i'm currently trying to figure out how to manage my laptop heat better, if this is gonna be a long-term thing.
I havn't done much MH (waiting for MHW!) but I do think the Axe is the closest to a GS. The pike is unlocked by getting the blacksmiths rep to 4 or so, which doesn't really take long. Think the axe just unlocks sometime during the quests for the second area? Might have been near the start of the third. I do think Axe and Hammer are my favorites so far, still trying to get used to timings on them to get max damage in and get out without getting hit. Once you start getting to the later hunts damage ramps up and people getting downed raises your danger meter quickly, ( the triangle on the upper right with the % number) and once that that maxes out you can't pull people up and you take a lot more damage.
SPINY EVIL FIRE CATDOG managed to wreck two consecutive parties.
Yeah, that fight is poorly designed imo. It just doesn't have any windows because most of the time it stops is after running all the way across the room to spam fireballs at you. At best you get a couple hits and then ZOOM its off again. A real problem if the party has a lot of weapons built for multiple hits - it's literally impossible to stick to it.
It's possible to knock it out of its charges for an opening but I'm unclear on the mechanic. I also suspect it's not really something the fast hitting weapons are suited for.
Yeah you need to knock it down as it charges to get any real damage on it, you basically hit it (in the head?) as it's charging. I've gotten decent at it with the Axe. I do know that some attacks can't, and some attacks need cells to be able to do so but not really 100% clear on the mechanics other then that.

I beat the stuffing out of it with Chain Blades, actually. Just chug a stamina potion and long-range chain-fling that puppy constantly.
The fourth party I attempted it with was successful.
Drask, on the other hand... Drask is...
It's Plesioth's tail swipe stapled to Rajang's mouth laser.
Who on their team thought this would be a fun fight??
It's good to see that they got the concept of using effects to show the strength of impacts. It does kind of feel like the power of attacks isn't really being applied to my character, though. I keep being hit by things that would have sent me flying in Monster Hunter but my character in this game just stands there and tanks.
The key to Drask is to cut it's tail off ASAP, it cuts out it's massive tail swipe attack. Also always try to be close to it, when it's enraged and backs up rapidly it's going to do the 3 shot attack so start sprinting either behind it or behind cover if you are too far out. It also always opens with a lightning shot so be ready for that on the approach. That being said it probably took me at least 5 attempts and when I finally got it the team got a E ranking, super close thing.
Especially if you're coming from Monster Hunter or any other hunting game where you can freely experiment from the start.
Monster Hunter thought it was a good idea at one point, too. Go back to Tri and you start with a Sword & Shield and a Greatsword, everything else had to be crafted. Switch Axes even had to be unlocked by story progress.

The first couple missions in Tri gave you enough money to buy any non-switch axe weapon; you were basically only stuck with two weapon types for the tutorial.

Judging by what I've seen so far you can get the axe in like two hours' play. The problem isn't gating content, it's that the rewards feel less like rewards and more like a tutorial grind.
Chain scythes are fun but absolutely underpowered for dps compared to hammer. They want to be dual blades in close with a ranged poke option that burns stamina. But they animation lock way too much.

Awww, I was having tons of fun with this but now I feel like I'm missing out not having a kitty to pet while I play. :P
that sounds... bad. maybe i'll stick with hammer? hammer is fantastic.
i'm finally learning how to not get set on fire like a chump by charrog!

CorriganX on Steam and just about everywhere else.
I don't know if both people need to be online when inviting, but I'll send an invite when I'm home.
Assuming I can get in-game before I go to bed.

Had a daily to use the sword. Got a team with three chainblades. They probably spent more time off their feet than standing up.

Hammer is way better. Jump strike lets you close and smack for solid damage before rolling out. If anything it's too strong.
