heeeelloooooooooo. I haven't been here in a while and lost my old email address so can't reset my password. I used to be 'webofink' but now am this guy over here. So... I forgot how this place works, what do I do now. Who are you all? Who am I? What's going on?
to be honest, unless either of those two or any of the current crop of bastards actively came up to me, or unless i was involved in some sort of actual organised protest or anything, i probably wouldn't do more than say something just loud enough to remind them that they shouldn't feel welcomed in polite society

Yeah but now you'll pay a $500 fine if you do that.

Yup! It was pretty cool, I'm like, minor minor internet famous! Which is pretty much the most famous I've ever been. And is more than I should expect, given that I'm long past 14 years of age.
edit- oh wait, the TISM page!?! Cool! It was the TISM fanpage yesterday. Tomorrow... the world!
On Friday I got a letter from AMP, who I used to have my superannuation with, saying: "Darndest thing! We checked and uh, a while back it looks like we rounded down when we should have rounded up! So here you go! No hard feelings, right?" And attached was a cheque for $23.

We just need to get a really good one, then they can stay in as long as they like. No term limits, baby!!!
I went to take a look at the list of PMs because I wanted to check how the numbers compared and what the what happened after Howard? Up till then it wasn't even that different to Germany (8 chancellors since 1949). As many PMs in the last 11 years as between 1971 and 2007?!

Well, we voted in a bloke named Kevin in '07, then right at the end of his first term as PM one of the more popular (and slightly more leftist) senior minsters from his cabinet (actually his Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard!) managed to usurp him.
Then he got her back two and a half years later after two failed attempts at taking the party leadership back from her.
The major conservative party spent tens if not hundreds of millions of dollars on an advertising blitz about how "unstable" the Labor party was for the next election, and got themselves voted in as the party of 'stability'. They then proceeded to do exactly what they said they wouldn't do, and have not one, but two leadership spills just like the Labor party had done previously...
And it's looking somewhat like we might have the next federal election in May 2019, and with it get ourselves a new Prime Minister because the LNP are shitting themselves to death at the moment - they're losing seats that have been safe conservative seats since the second world war.
George Pell got convicted, but the order is subject to suppression orders in australia. Here's a link to an overseas article by the dailybeast that's geoblocked normally
Frankly, I disagree with Antony Green's first tweet, and agree with the response from Stonehouse.
Group voting tickets that 'distort the vote', where all the independents preference all the other independents before any major party, become effectively a vote between the major/minor parties and 'Any other rando as determined by lottery'.
Hopefully all the randos only preference aligned randos first instead of some round-robin thing, or worse instead of based on some power-brokers master preference plan.
But if not, then we need a higher quality pool of randos, not the removal of group preferences. And that's 'easily' fixed by encouraging more randos to run.
Any major/minor party that loses out to the 'Anyone else' vote should feel ashamed, not blame the vote system.
Antony voicing an opinion on the above is also likely grounds for his being fired from the public broadcaster too.
All public servants are bound by the APS Act, which demands political impartiality in their work, at threat of dismissal.
A public-facing representative stating an opinion on how GVT is a 'blight' is impuning on the legitimacy of parties elected based on preference flows.
This makes the argument for the major/minor parties for them, that this practice should be abolished, and this can be hardly claimed to be politically impartial.
That said, Antony's quite right with respect to typosquatting parties being trash.
... which will likely mean we end up with the one of the main forces behind the two labor party spills in as PM.
It's not like he hasn't been angling for it forever.
Remember when it was revealed he was informing on the goings on in parliament and Australian to the US while trying to get their support for a run at PM himself due to bitterness at being skipped over by Kevin Rudd when he handed out portfolios.
So... What the fuck is going on with Disney content on streaming services in Australia? Stan is boasting getting Disney content soon, are we just not getting Disney+?
I always heard Disney were going to launch their own streaming service, so I assumed that would be available down here. Perhamps Stan just went in and secured all that #content for [period of time]?

Good god is that egregious. They'll happily allow some teenager to be torn to shreds as public enemy number one and then continue to malign them after they've been vindicated, but an honest to god institutional scoundrel gets a free pass. Fucking gross

it's a weird thing because it's only in place until his next upcoming trial in march
and the rationale is so that members of the jury aren't unduly influenced by knowing that he's been convicted of the same offences before
but it's such a weird legal fiction that it would be a miscarriage of justice if the jury knew that he had been convicted of an earlier offence because it might mean that they would assume that he might have done it again
I'd argue that name suppression is usually a very good thing*. Because it is usually in place for very good reasons. And this would be one of them. It is only temporary in this case and it has been put in place because they don't want to mistrial the trial in March.
*The most common reason for permanent name suppression is that the abuser is family of the victim so identifying the accused/guilty means identifying the victim.
i guess my problem isn't with supression orders as a concept
but more with the idea that the jury knowing about previous crimes would be a miscarriage of justice and could result in a mistrial
like, i get everything about not dragging up someone's complete history in criminal trials. and it's generally a good thing
but our justice system is very bad with dealing with patterns of abuse, especially domestic or sexual abuse, or systematic abuse of authority, because everything must be dealt with in isolation
in this case, the fact that the dude wouldn't be able to be convicted of a second set of crimes because people were made aware that he was found guilty of a first set of crimes is absurd to me
I think it's fairly reasonable to treat each set of crimes individually. If the jury knows that someone did a similar crime (or even a completely different crime) then they will be biased against the defendant. And it degrades the idea
of innocent until proven guilty.

It is possible I've never watched the show but the tune wafted through the halls of my school anyway.
The spellbinder theme is too short to work, sadly.
Lovely to be here.

I drove past Troy Buswell and unfortunately couldn't get my window down fast enough that he could hear me screaming "tuuuuuuuuuuurd" as I went past.
