There is gating, but it does not take long at all to unlock things and the intro guns are great. If you really want to get the flatline before going into multiplayer you can do Frontier Defense until that unlocks, or go ham with the CAR.
Picked this up for $6 on the big Xbox sale. Uh wow the campaign is really really fun to play. I don't imagine I'll be taking a super deep dive into multi at this late date but the scummy way EA released this is ridiculous considering how immediately interesting and exciting the campaign is.

It looks like a new Titanfall is coming! It's free to play!
Well I suppose we can start taking bets on what month and year EA will ax Respawn.
October 2020 is my guess.
I’d say it depends on if their Star Wars game comes out and ‘underperforms’ EA’s expectations or if it just gets cancelled outright before release. Plus you figure they can string the corpse of Respawn along as a support studio for DICE.
Man, I loved the hell outta TF1. I actually reached Max Gen in that game. I didn’t get to play much TF2 online because I didn’t have very good internet when it launched but I played the campaign later and it was very good. It’s kind of sad that I’m not sure if I’d bet on ever seeing a TF3.

Oh come on, at least have Titans act as findable vehicles like in Blackout.
Oh come on, at least have Titans act as findable vehicles like in Blackout.
Especially since Titanfall's original premiseclaim to fame was "Call of Duty multiplayer...but with mechs!"
Why can't it be like a large scale Last Titan Standing (a mode that already exists in the game), where everyone starts with Titans, and after their Titans are destroyed they have to run around on foot using anti-Titan measures to take out the rest, then regular guns for the pilots?
According to some sources there was a Titanfall game set to potentially release late last year, but a combination of the Nexon bid and the tech starting to age made them decide to push it back. A game different than this one.
Battle royale is already saturated to death. At this stage in a fad's lifecycle you need to do something really unique to stand out from the already established winners. Like how Smite established itself as an alternative to dota/lol with its unique approach.
This is just br with better parkour. Which I doubt is different enough to break in past the initial hype.

Listen, it's not impossible that this would happen, but it would be almost impressively stupid. Because EA was working in partnership with Respawn until just after Titanfall 2. If they didn't like them any more, all they had to do was dissolve the partnership. Instead, they bought them for some large dollar amount. If they then shuttered them, they would be paying hundreds of millions for the privilege of doing what they could have done for free. So I think in this particular case, won't happen.

I wont argue that that does make logical sense, but EA has literally done this multiple times already. Buy a studio for big money, shutter it 2-3 years later.

Normally, it's like "buy a studio making games for themselves (say, Playfish making mobile games) and try to integrate that process into EA. When it doesn't become as profitable as they expected, abandon the idea and fire everybody." The difference here is that they already making games (and therefore, money) for EA. Unless there's a management shakeup (so the new guy wants to kill and bury all the projects of the old guy), they SHOULD be okay.
I heard a rumor there wasn't even wall running in the battle royale thing, is that known from something official or did someone make that up?
There's nothing official at all other than the fact that EA copyrighted the title last year.
Everything we have is leaks and rumors from people like Jason Schreier and Slasher.

Respawn hasn't been making money for EA. Titanfall 2 sold even less than its predecessor despite being for all the systems and an actually awesome game. EA was quite disappointed. Though it was EA's own damn fault. In fact it was their fault the first one wasn't as much a success as it could have been. They didn't even learn their lesson and repeated the exact same mistake for the sequel.
This F2P Battle Royale entry is not going to do well. BR has been a non-starter for games for over a year now and Titanfall as an IP doesn't have as much of a share of the public consciousness as Battlefield or CoD, both of which also did poorly.
Ugh, actually I am going to make a prediction and say that the game that launches Monday will have a big old "Early Access" sticker on it. Completing the shit trifecta that is EA micro-transactions, Battle Royale, and Early Access.
I will be happy to be wrong.

Call of Duty Black Ops IV (I refuse the IIII designation as it is dumb) actually did really, really well. Not sure where you're getting your info from?
Honestly I'm excited for more Titanfall in general. The gunplay and movement are really satisfying and there's nothing quite like it. I was really good at TF1 but didn't spend as much time on 2 even though it felt great.
I'll be hopping in to check it out for sure, and since it's free I can get it on both Xbox and PS4 which is cool.
Titanfall's movement mechanics simply don't mesh well with BR style game play. TF is all being angry lemur with roller blades, a tiny jet pack and a large bore shotgun. Careening around the map, heading directly towards gunfire as fast as possible.
PUBG for example, is instead played more akin to a panther. For the most part sneaking about in the undergrowth, avoiding the other bigger panthers you've no hope of taking on and occasionally jumping on a tasty gnu you've been stalking for 10 minutes straight.
Panthers are not lemurs people, panthers are not lemurs.
Man, how do they keep fucking this game up. It's so good!
On the other hand, this sounds ever so slightly more appealing than other BR games. I've played all of a single match of PUBG, but I might be willing to give this more of a shot as long as it keeps the series' awesome movement mechanics intact.

Yeah this is all amazing really, the surreal saga of Titanfall. As said already, it feels like it's always been aggressively set up to fail by those who need it to succeed the most...it's the Firefly/Fox debacle of video games to me in terms of marketing, release schedule, etc., Ha.
There are so many cool things about Titanfall 2 that were complete surprise hits for me. It still has the best gunfire/ambient sound effects in any shooter I've played; the flatline is one of the most satisfying virtual guns to shoot for feel and sound feedback for some reason. I actually never played too much online, but I replay the campaign every 3 or 4 months because it's so freaking good.
And now...BR? Hmm.
BB wut is you doin'. No BB.

TBH there were quite a few people, even TF players who said they'd love to play a matchless version of TF so we'll see.
That said one of my issues with TF2 was that I think the map design was adjusted to better suit Titan gameplay but it made them feel less fun in the process. Way too much empty open space when you're playing pilot.

The problem is that, once you take out the mechs, you're left with Call of Duty: Advanced/Infinite Warfare.

No, because anyone who's played those games now they simply aren't as fun or engaging to play. I keep coming back to Titanfall because of the gunplay. Yes, I love giant robots and am sad this game are skipping them, but the main thing you engage with in the game is the on-foot combat.
And it's way better than most CoD games (I haven't tried the newest CoD just to be clear, it looks fine but nowhere near what TF does)

But the mechs are a part of that on-foot combat. The feel of running along a wall, arc grenading a titan to scramble the sensors, grappling hooking into a rodeo and bringing down the titan with a cheeky nuke rodeo and living to scamper away? That's, for me, the definitive experience of Titanfall. Remove titans from that equation, and I may as well just be playing CoD.

If this is just a side project I don't really care either way. But yeah...can't have a mainline TF without Titans imo.
Fighting a Titan as a pilot was doable in TF1 but in 2 the Titans are a lot more able so I was consistently getting squashed. As much as Titans made the game exciting there were times I wish they weren't in the game (such as CTF). I think this is just a different game in the Titanfall universe, with maybe a different playstyle to be had. We also don't know what the maps will look like, if they will feature maybe AI Titans to fight, so maybe the core gameplay remains similar just without pilotable robots. Who knows.

Ah Titanfall, life was unjustly harsh to you.
I don't mind the loss of Titans so much as I do the loss of a campaign. TF2 had an amazing campaign. I want more of that.

I suspect EA's contract with Disney has a "at least 1 game every 2 years" stipulation.
They canceled the most recent one because it wouldn't come out by 2019.
