I sort of feel like this is getting to a level of detail that is maybe not necessary for an unofficial Wing Commander sequel but who am I to judge Chris Roberts's dreams?

I didn't play Homeworld Re until recently, but apparently most people's problems have been addressed with a substantial fix to formations and how the friendly and enemy AI ship classes behave under certain orders.

It took me about an hour to really get used to the controls, and the first few missions of both games are quite punishing, but once you master them, you can sail through the rest of the campaign and have a lot of fun.

I have an account on RSI and everything but only ever downloaded an alpha hangar thing forever ago. As an original backer, I get Squadron 42 and the whole shebang right? There's an option to buy Squadron 42, but I thought that came with what I got originally. Sounds like I should maybe wait until 3.0 to download and see what's up.

Well, I guess not here either but it's part of why Star Citizen still fills me with hope for some reason. Last time I ran the game after an update it was all laggy again so I'll wait a while before trying to load up my hangar.

    AWACS- Airborne Warning and Control?

Not really sure what you mean, but Elite Dangerous is a great space sim if that's what you're looking for. There's no walking around - It's all flying all the time (well, you can also drive a land rover buggy).

Sure, but can I pay extra to repaint that buggy and drive it around a boxy hangar?!

Yessir. Also, the "pulse" paint packs glow (think TRON).

Yeah, if you were one of the original backers, buying in should net you the full thing. Some part of your profile will list what you currently own, it should tell you there what you have access to.

I seem to be in the incredible minority on it (based of dioscussions on reddit/official forums/anywhere else), but I'm actually really unhappy with what they've done to the Cutlass. It's nicer, sure, but it's WAY bigger and they've taken away the minimalist jack-of-all trades feel to it, in favor of an explicit "This is a pirate raiding and boarding ship" direction. Which is not at all what I wanted out of it.

Pretty sure he's talking about the fact that the original unexpanded goals were about flying ships around but has since been vastly expanded to something where you have to walk out of the space saloon and drive out to your spaceship and park just right to be able to get into your spaceship to finally fly away.

Though I doubt that's going to be a standard situation if you don't want it to be. With how missions are developing, seems to me that if you just want to fly ships around you probably just need to hang around space stations and only pick up the missions that let you stay in your ship.

i think the bigger thing is, i just don't care

if that's a bullet point when the game comes out that's cool, but how about at your giant gamescom yearly press conference you show stuff about the game, or squadron 42, or a release OR FUCKING SOMETHING

at this point just having long videos about small new tech features is insane to me.

Got an hour or so of gameplay, that was neat.

I do admit I love the idea that if you ring up another ship you see the face of the person talking to you in a vid-screen. I am a sucker for that kind of immersion.

Roberts made it pretty clear from the start that his big drive for making this game was to push the envelope of game development, and there's every indication that that's what we're getting. Flying ships around to shoot at each other was the bare-minimum starting point, and I'm frankly pretty glad that we get to see a lot more of the development than just ships flying around and shooting each other. Something like the facetracking and emergent gameplay is way more unique and interesting than watching a collection of ships fighting each other with no context or purpose.

As for Squadron 42, the less they show of it before release, the happier I'll be. I have no desire at all to have to dodge spoilers about it, I want to be able to enjoy it in my own time at release without media blitzes or forum posts trying to ruin my enjoyment. Can't have any spoilers about the singleplayer campaign if the dev actually keeps a lid on it.

The only envelope they've pushed so far is that of game production - beyond anything anyone familiar with game development would consider sane or doable. It's why we still don't have an end in sight after all these years, and why there's still so many unanswered questions about what the game is actually going to be like, and why there's still, years into what should be main production, no clear schedule or feature lock or finished design.

I don't regret putting hundreds of Euros into this game, since its mere existence as an idea has led to a revival of the space sim genre, but I've long stopped seeing it as anything other than an irregular-schedule spaceship porn generator. For everything else? Put up or shut up, imho. Fuck the hype.

Yeah, I just look at the game as being in the standard development mode that any game has, CIG just bothers to put out a lot of info about the process where most devs don't have the interest or, more likely, the resources.

I briefly delve into the info once every few months, but I'm not really interested in putting in any time until 3.0 hits.

I'm less enthused about 3.0 since I found out the netcode features aren't going to be in it; that's what I really need for the multiplayer to actually be playable. That and a fix for the "stand up and be catapulted out of your ship" thing.

CIG bit off more than they could chew. A game of the scope Roberts envisions is easily an 8 year development cycle. Look at how long it takes for R* to release a GTA V or RDR game. These games are in development years before you even know they exist and are only announced near the tail end. Problem with Star Citizen is that it was announced during the conceptual phase with a teaser trailer. So now everyone is huffing and puffing that there's been no progress made for an eventual release date but the truth is that a significant amount of progress has been completed. Unfortunately, this is the problem with crowd funded games. When you get in early, at the very beginning of dev cycle, with a crowd chomping at the bit to play, it's disheartening to have to wait this long.

Honestly, for the crowd funding they should have done the Squadron singleplayer module first without all the bells and whistles. That could have been completed at a reasonable amount of time or possibly even be released by now. But because they chose to make the simulation, MMO, EVE contender of the game first, there's simply no way they could have released it within the time window they were aiming for. You could tell the game's not even Alpha yet because they're still adding features and doing polish passes on maps and locations. I bet they still haven't finished shooting mocap either.

Anyway, I'm still excited for the game. The idea of being able to launch fighters from a capital ship or pick up a rover with another ship excites me greatly. This is going to be a truly immersive world and I really hope CIG can pull it off.

The Gamescom demo looked pretty good in terms of systems. Like, the orbital to atmospheric transition, the way things work together, the foundational stuff that a game could be built on, but there still isn't a game there, so I still have no idea what to expect.

I'm pretty sure the niche I'm desperate to find a game to fill, the same niche Freelancer filled, isn't going to be filled by Star Citizen. The scope is just far too big. I'm still optimistic we'll get something good, though. At least I hope so.

That's why it seems like it's taking forever. They've got a huge playground to fill with content and that's where this game is going to live or die. They're going to have to tweak game mechanics like economy throughout the game's life. I'm hoping they continue to enlist the community to create new content, missions, etc.

I think the fun factor of this game is going to be dependent on how many people are active in our guild and in other guilds. We know there is going to be a lot of derelict ships out there. Capital ships to be salvaged and the like. It's also dependent on how the economy will work and if we can build our own starbases or factories, etc to build our own little empire.

There are a lot of people out there who have bought a lot of ships over the course of the development. If they don't want those ships just collecting dust in the hangar, they're going to want to hire NPCs to fly them if there aren't enough players to fly them. So people will want to generate money to pay them to go out and haul cargo or whatever. Just the sheer number of different systems in this game should ensure a wide variety of playstyles. I still can't wait to see the hard core space sim jockeys teaming up with the hard core FPS types since this game accommodates both.

Even if this game just doesn't quite live up to everything we hoped for, It's still going to be crazy interesting to be a part of it.

It's been a while since I've read an update on it, but the economy is going to be setup so that there's a shit ton of requirements to go from raw material mining all the way to manufactured goods. Players will be able to fill any role in that process taking on missions and fulfilling requests, any slack left by players will be picked up by NPCs who will fulfill those missions just like a player would. With this framework in place it shouldn't be too hard to have it so players can be in charge of said NPCs.

I'm long past the standard notion of hype for this game, but have entered a kind of hibernation state. Just ever so gently keeping tabs on the various awesome systems they keep bringing out without getting too excited. The scope is gigantic, but so far they keep on proving themselves in terms of the tech. The only thing I'm worried about is the netcode. Decent responsiveness has been in dev for a loooong while with not much concrete to show for it. Though I suppose it's very much a binary it is/isn't done thing, so we won't see it until its finished.

As far as I'm aware this is indeed the issue. Normally maps in a game are at most a few km across. CIG has done something entirely new by increasing the size of the "map" by a significant number of factors. The first problem to solve was converting pretty much the ENTIRE CryEngine codebase to have increased dimensional accuracy to allow this. Secondly since the map is a lot bigger there are going to be way more objects in play, so whereas in pretty much any other game you can just have the netcode send info on all objects everywhere, this is not longer viable. Additionally the increased accuracy means you're passing around more data for each object update, so the problem is further exacerbated.

It's not an intractable problem, but since pretty much all issues with it are so deep rooted in the codebase, it's going to be a real beast to change.

They're still in the process of doing so, AFAIK Star Citizen is still running mostly off of CryEngine's built-in netcode.

This is where I landed...about two years ago. I'm considering SC one of those really super sweet games that was announced to be in the process of starting to possibly be developed years ago. I won't plug back in until we're in what once was considered "open beta" quality. SC had made me realize how few fucks I actually give about watching a game get made. It's like meeting the girl of your dreams, who says she's ready to get hot and heavy, only to find out it's going to take 11 years for her to slide off those sweet silk panties.

X3 is great! But so much more than Privateer, and presented somewhat obtusely. No disagreement there, but I would love if it was another proper X game. I would also settle for a Freelancer.

Wing Commander was fun, at the time, but I'm not super hype about fixed sequence of space battles. Really hoping S42 has more in common with Privateer, as Privateer basically ruined me for WC.

It has too, right? All WC would require is the combat flight sim aspect, which seems to be done. Maybe the FPS element. It would seem like a big waste to leave all the private sector elements out of it.
