I mean, we've known that the player will have downtime between missions, because they've said it multiple times since the beginning. We've known that the player will have the ability to move through capital ships during this downtime because Chris Roberts has said from the beginning that he wants the player to control a pilot that is inside of a ship instead of controlling a ship directly, and they've also demoed it in multiple promo videos. We've known that you'll be able to move through mess halls because we were able to walk around inside of a Javelin and it had a mess hall.
We also know that the game will have a lot of attention paid to ridiculously small details because Chris Roberts literally does not shut up about capital F Fidelity, and hasn't since the original kickstarter.
With all of this in mind, it seems weird to have this level of vitriol over NPC eating animations. Not every update is going to include massive, earth-shaking flashy additions to the game, sometimes its just going to be boring backend stuff or minute details that seem insignificant but when added to all of the other minute details create the sense of immersion that Star Citizen is going for.
If you can't see how farcical RSI calling being able to have people walk with a helmet under their left OR right arm a technical breakthrough after ten years of development and the most money a video game developer has ever been given ever, I'm not sure what else I can really say.
Though I just cannot help but wonder what part of it they were having trouble with, and why they specifically called it a "breakthrough". Was it the helmet just falling through the arm? Did the legs just stop moving when they put the helmet under the left arm vs the right?
At this point it just seems like you're whining just to whine.
I don't understand the perverse sense of pleasure some people seem to have with shitting on this game. If you're not happy with how the development is going than stop paying attention to it. Forget it exists until a release date is announced.
Someone asked if there were Squadron 42 updates at CitizenCon that just happened. There were not.
The last updates were from an email on the 6th of October, that I quoted from directly.
Like-- if people are directly asking about things, complaining about people talking about the things that are being asked directly about seems kinda silly.
RSI, with regards to Squadron 42, has a major credibility problem, and their updates continue to not inspire confidence. I'm not even talking Star Citizen because that was always sorta intended to be its own thing and I'm not gonna begrudge anyone for enjoying what's already been put out, or comment on Star Citizen's development whatsoever-- whatever they're doing on that side of the house is their own business.
But for Squadron 42? Oh yeah, especially after the roadmap to the design of their new roadmap debacle I am happily going to pick apart the little breadcrumbs they drop.

"The team also supported server meshing by decoupling code so that it can run as a standalone service."
Why in the fuck are we worrying about server meshing for a single player game again?
Because the non-singleplayer game uses the same code.
It was that somehow, from within the derelict-horror, they had learned a way to see inside an ugly, broken thing... And take away its pain.

If you can't see what is hilarious about describing "they hold helmets now" as a technical breakthrough for a game that has been in development for 10 years with zillions of dollars and that was supposed to be out like 50 years ago, that's on you. I don't hate Star Citizen/SQ42 but if you can't laugh at how ridiculous of a mess this whole thing is then you've lost perspective. Like, the original estimate for 2014. We are in 2021 and their latest breakthrough is that helmet holding isn't fucked up. That's hilarious. If helmet holding is a breakthrough then what is the label for when the game is actually playable? Mark Hamill is going to die before this thing comes out and it's going to be his memorial! He's 70 already.
So I actually scrolled through what footage I could find of Squadron 42, and the single and only episode of the "new quarterly show" all about Squadron 42 that was released last year, The Briefing Room, and indeed I could not find a single frame of someone holding a helmet in any of it.
I'm fairly certain Star Citizen actually counts as a cult now.
While there are definitely people who have drank a little too much of the kool-aid (and spent a stupid amount of their money), the sadder group is the one who endlessly gloats about how they didn't get "caught in the scam" out of some sad misplaced sense of superiority.
The Derek Smart subreddit is always seeking new members if any of you stalwart champions of the anti-Star Citizen cause are interested.
I still want Star Citizen and Squadron 42 to succeed.
The game isn't there yet, and from what I gathered from CitCon, it's still probably a while out. So in the meantime I'll just continue to play other games, and continue to check in on patches to see what's being added.
Honestly, until we're given the "no more wipes" announcement, I have very little desire to play, just because I don't want to grind up a bunch of aUEC and buy ships, only to lose it all in a wipe. So I'll just wait.

I think you're getting a little paranoid. I am not a "stalwart champion of the anti-Star Citizen cause." I paid $125 the day it was revealed, and threw in another $5 for the Kickstarter, and I haven't asked for my money back nor do I think I got scammed. I've faithfully been the OP of every single Star Citizen thread. I don't have any "sad misplaced sense of superiority" and I don't talk about the game anywhere except here. I just think it's funny that the latest breakthrough in their single player campaign, scheduled for release 7 years ago, is NPCs holding helmets.

You're making a lot of weird accusations over me pointing out the ridiculousness of some of the claims being made by CIG/RSI, as well as their inability to maintain credible lines of communication about a game with an estimated release date of 7 years ago, in direct response to someone asking if CIG/RSI had mentioned one peep of Squadron 42 at CitizenCon, the big ol yearly thing where they talk about all the progress they made on the anniversary of their announcing Squadron 42 and Star Citizen.
No one is a champion or a part of some "anti-Star Citizen cause".
No one is gloating about how they didn't get "caught in the scam".
If you can show me, in any of my above posts, where I've done either of those things, I'll happily eat my hat.
EDIT: Also, I've got my golden ticket and an Aurora sitting about in the hangar. I've got skin in the game, as they say.
I mean-- your first reaction was to ask who hurt me when I was pointing out the silliness of the latest Squadron 42 update.
When I tried to underscore the comedic aspect of it, you accused me of excessive vitriol and whining just to whine, and not understanding the perverse pleasure that some people get from shitting on the game. I can't speak for anyone else's thoughts but to me it feels like you're getting really defensive about this!
No one is angry at you or attacking you. We are making fun of the game, and Chris Roberts as perhaps an extension. I'm just trying to put a comedic spin on practical radio silence from the developers on something, and based off of many years of this, I'm pretty sure they're gonna keep on with the practical radio silence.
It is pretty funny that they're touting helmet holding as a technological breakthrough. Maybe the physics clipping is? Sometimes characters holding things has clipping issues with the character model. Like if an object is held too close to the body, it clips into the body? I'm speaking generally about all video games. There are a few things that always stand out in any video game as character model problems, and nobody has ever bothered to solve those things. Cloaks and cloth physics are one such example. Or as I just mentioned, sometimes holding objects too close to the model will cause polygons from one object to clip into another. For all I know maybe them solving a physics clipping issue actually is a big deal.
\I'm just trying to put a comedic spin on practical radio silence from the developers on something, and based off of many years of this, I'm pretty sure they're gonna keep on with the practical radio silence.
If your aim was a "comedic spin" you missed. Shitting on a game that other people enjoy to try and be oh so hilarious kinda falls flat when we've seen people try the exact same thing over and over again. I hate to have to tell you this but you are not the first person to make fun of Star Citizen's ridiculously long development time and your comments are not particularly clever or novel.
I'm sorry that you do not see the silliness in someone touting helmet holding as a technological breakthrough in gaming, but I'm afraid we're gonna just have to agree to disagree on this one!

I do see the silliness in whining about NPC modeling progress updates for a game that is still in alpha, if that helps.

It's actually not the helmet holding that was the issue. Apparently, holding the helmet with the left arm caused issues with the walking animation.

I'm mostly bummed because it seems like Squadron 42 is suffering due to being tied to Star Citizen, and when and if it does come out it's going to be a Red Dead 2 Situation where it becomes a life simulator. That is certainly a lot of folks Jam, but I was really hoping for a tight story driven space pew pew game. It feels like all this giant open world stuff will be cool for like an hour, then I'll use fast travel for everything.

I'm not entirely clear what the game is supposed to be like these days, but I don't think it is open world. I am currently of the belief that the Idris acts as a sort of mission hub, where you can walk around and talk to crew, listen to story stuff, but then eventually choose a mission and launch from the ship and are directed.

This is some kool-aid drinking levels of rhetoric. Criticizing the project isn't anti-anything, its healthy. Equating others to be followers of that stalker scumbag for daring to criticize is just gross.
It is objectively very funny that 7+ years in they are touting npcs carrying a helmet as a tech breakthrough. Objective humor doesn't exist, but that's very funny.

I completely disagree! The comedy was on point, and they're very clever about it.
They managed to figure out how to make people walk with a helmet under either arm. Truly we have now entered uncharted territory in video gaming with this "technical breakthrough". Never before in video games have we had people walk with a helmet under first their left arm, and then their right. Also they're continuing to make people using their eating utensils properly; obviously of great concern in a single player campaign of space dogfights.
Who hurt you?
Chris Roberts and his dream of feature creep, one would assume.

There is a difference between healthy criticism of a project and desperately trying to dunk on developers with some lame attempt at comedy. I have no problem with anyone criticizing the game and have done plenty of it myself in this thread.

I think a little dunking is fine when the initial release date was November 2014.
Star Citizen is a shitshow, likely because of mismanagement from Chris Roberts. It will also likely become a feature complete game at some point in the future, assuming the funding holds. The whole situation is hilarious, fascinating, and frustrating. There will likely never be a game made like this again. And oddly enough, I’m kinda ok with a madman getting unlimited funds to make the game of his dreams even if it takes well over decade.

Funding should be fine.
They've mentioned before that the amount of money they are making now from licensing the tech they have developed is more than what they get from Crowd Funding.
Which is maybe kind of part of the problem.
edit- Or to elaborate;
CIG is in a privately owned company. Now while I do agree that The Investors can absolutely be dicks, they do generally ensure that products get put out, for good or bad. CIG does not have this and with the funding from the licensing they don't have to deliver shit until they want to. The more fancy new tech they make the more money they make the more fancy new tech they can make.
And I say this as someone who is fine with it all. I've given them $45 USD and have put far and away more hours in to the alpha then I have most recent AAA games. So I'm largely, "Eh, whenever" in terms of the game's release.
edit 2- Honestly, I'm pretty sure the dev team must be, like, 80% German considering how over engineered everything is.

I was gifted the original $20 buy-in back when Star Citizen was a Kickstarter, so I poke my head in here every few years to see if anything of note is happening.
It sure does feel like Chris Roberts either has no idea how to ship a game or else forgot somewhere along the way that that's what he originally set out to do.
Are they still trying to do the ridiculous "model every ship component down to the bolts for realistic damage cascades" thing?
He used to be pretty good at it up until WCIV.
Then he probably bonked his head between that and Freelancer, that was like a prototype for SC that got pressured into release by MS, IIRC. Great game, obviously had a bunch of stuff cut out.

edit- For example, lighting.
The sun at the center of the system literally lights everything in the the system. When you are on a planet and it is day and you see the sun in the sky that is not a skybox. That is literally a big ass physical object a very long ways away from you. When you are planetside at night and you look up at the sky and see specks of light moving around those are ships. The lights are a results of the light of the sun reflecting off the damn ship like in real life.
It is very cool, but honestly, if it was done with smoke and mirrors like a sane developer would do I wouldn't notice a difference.
