I think the point of uncertainty lies in the vagueness of the announcement. They say "continue the story from Detective Pikachu." But they never actually say that it is a brand new game.
People have pointed out that it could just be a port of the 3DS game with an extra epilogue or additional chapters at the end that would end the story, and still be new content, but not necessarily be an entirely new game.

Super excited for the Sword & Shield direct next week now.

With the direct, I may just come here for the news and avoid actually watching it for fear of them showing off a lot of new 'mons. I need that surprise of fresh new dudes while playing the game.

Oh yea, all the mons will be revealed one way or the other before the game comes out. It happens every time. So if you don't wanna see that stuff tread very carefully.
I've been doing info blackouts for new 'mon for the past few generations, so I'm pretty well versed in the methods needed to do so. However, I'm much more into twitter now than I was back then, so I'm gonna have to set up my muted words pretty carefully to avoid them.
It's funny. There's a lot of stuff that I care very deeply about spoilers. For example - Star Wars. I have not watched the trailers for any of the 3 core films, and I sometimes have to go out of my way to avoid seeing online discussions/analysis of trailers for those movies. So I totally get it.
But Pokemon specifically is one thing that I just can't get enough of. The more spoilers the better. Give me all of the info.
Of course, I'm also the type of person who likes to pre-plan my party, so I like to know the full list of new regional 'mons ahead of time and all of their evolutions, so that I can make informed decisions on party composition.

Like, imagine you go in blind and accidentally evolve your Crabrawler right before the elite 4. That's a devastating loss.
Yeah, they released just about every Pokemon in a trailer or showcase in some form before Sun/Moon came out. And obviously they did the same for USUM. I think the best way going forward is going to just be liberal use of spoiler tags until about ~1 month after release. Starters, Pokemon on the box, Main Characters, general mechanics would be fine to openly discuss imo.
To be fair, that's one of the most lazy names they've ever come up with and it's also not immediately apparent. I can't tell you how long it took for me to 'get' certain Pokemon names.
For instance: it took me years to get the pun of delivered in "Delibird,"
There's a ton of non-obvious names too. Nidoran is named as such for it's needle like horn. "Zubbato" is a smacking or flapping sound, Japanese onomatopoeia make up a lot of names left untranslated. Or how Electrode is just electric + explode... I can go on and on
Also I was surprised to learn Chikorita isn't Japanese, but actually a pun on "chicory"
I still think a better name for Delibird would have been Delivibird due to everyone I knew not getting the pun. "What's a santa bird got to do with deli meat?"
Also I'll hazard a couple of guesses as to why Crabrawler evolving would make you sad: 1) its evo is super ugly and 2) it becomes part ice type, a terrible defensive type. Dunno if there's a stat or move based reason why it'd suck, though.
Is ice really that terribly defensive these days? I thought that as time went on, there aren't really and "bad" types anymore, since there's so much type coverage these days. I mean, disclaimer, I don't do a lot of competitive battling. So I don't really have a clear concept of what is good.
What makes ice so bad defensively? It seems pretty on par with most other elements, just taking a quick glance at the type chart.

It’s Chick Corea and you’ll never convince me otherwise

Electrode is actually just it's own thing. It's a conductive point where electricity enters or leaves a circuit.

Ice is weak to 4 types, which is more than every other type besides Grass. Ice is strong against only one type and immune against none, the lowest of all types (Normal is immune against one type and strong against none, elevating it above Ice). On the competitive side, Ice is weak to Rock meaning Stealth Rock is potentially a problem.

A huge part of the issue is that fighting and rock are two of the most commonly-packed coverage moves, so any given team is going to have multiple ways to decimate any ice type at any given time. Add in that they also get blindsided by people running steel moves to deal with faeries and it's an awful, awful time. This also applies to rock types, fwiw, which are also just atrocious defensively adding in the fun earthquake weakness.
Oh, and they don't cover steel's weaknesses so even crossing then with the best defensive type does pretty much nothing.
Pokemon Direct begins in 5 minutes. Friendly reminder to use spoiler tags on all new info since there are members here at PA who want to remain in the dark till they are playing it.
Could people also indicate what sort of info is in each spoiler, if it's not too much of a hassle? While I want to remain in the dark about new Pokemon I am interested in things like new/returning mechanics.
This causes pokemon to get super huge. Introduces a new button on the interface that lets you make your pokemon huge. All moves become Max Moves while Dynamax is active. It lasts for 3 turns.
Multiplayer Max Raid Battles. Players can team up to fight a permanently Dynamaxed pokemon. If the Multiplayer raid battle succeeds, they can catch the dynamax pokemon.

I'm not sure what I think about these new Legendaries.
On the one hand, I'm glad to have some wolf legendaries.
On the other hand, one of them is literally just a wolf with a sword in its mouth. I feel like they could've done better with that one.
The wolf with the sword in its mouth totally reminds me of WolfLink, and the sword isn't the master sword, but that's the image that popped into my head when I saw it. It's basically WolfLink with the master sword in its mouth.

Wait...I wonder if, at some point, Persian was supposed to be Purrsian.

Crabominable looks incredible dumb. And not good dumb like Stunfisk. It's a big disappointment after Crabrawler's cool design
