I'm honestly in love with this idea. The rival doesn't always need to be a kid your age / your neighbor / Gary. A nasty old woman as your rival is perfect. She's like Mean Mary Poppins.

I feel I should point out Bede is a dude. The official article uses male pronouns and everything.

The Pikachu knock-off this time has a fun gimmick. Also, I wasn't expecting a regional form (Galarian Linoone) to get its own new evolved form (Obstagoon).

Doug Dimmadome is trending on Twitter because of Galarian Weezing
I'm glad to see they stepped outside of the original 151 for at least one of the new regional forms. That seemed like a really arbitrary restriction in Sun/Moon. There are plenty of Pokemon in need of an update to make their typing better, or make their designs more visually interesting. Plus from a lore perspective, it never made sense that only a few Pokemon, all originating from the Kanto region, would evolve differently in Alola.
Hopefully there are more non-original 151 Galar regionals.

In SuMo you literally had your banked pokemon working the mines in PokePelago
Oh wow.
I think I blocked that whole pokepelago out of mind after spending way too long there getting bottle caps and shit before actually making progress in the game.

It kind of feels like Galarian Weezing would make more sense as a Poision/Flying or Poison/Fire type.
More elaborate trailer thoughts now that I have time:
Love the new Zigzagoon and Linoone. I respect what the evolution is going for but it isn't totally my jam.
Galarian Weezing is fantastic.
Morpeko is cute but perhaps my least favorite of the Pikaclones. Hopefully it'll grow on me. Electric/Dark is a fun typing and hopefully the ability triggers with some consistency so you can actually control and use it to your advantage in battle.
People like to point out trees and Pokemon animations etc. as evidence that this game looks "bad", and I will be honest this game certainly has rough edges (Pokemon always does), but the character animation on the people continues to be fantastic. It is a huge leap forward from Sun and Moon (which already had some pretty good character animation!), I love how animated the characters are in this go-around.
I am very glad to see Poke Pelago-esque stuff return in the form of Poke-Jobs, but I am a bit worried from the interface screenshots- timing seems to be less discrete, and in effect may be less useful for the "plug and chug" EV training that Poke Pelago was fantastic for. Also, I had sort of hoped this stuff would have been shifted over to Pokemon Home so that I could just handle it from my phone, which seems more appropriate, but oh well. Hopefully I am overreacting!
I hope that when the anime switches away from Sun and Moon to the new Sword and Shield content that they either go back to their animation style from X/Y, which was brilliant, or at least do something new. I'm not a fan of their One Piece knockoff style that they have been using for all of SuMo. (I don't like One Piece's animation style either).
See, I hope the exact opposite! Sun & Moon's more dynamic and interesting animation (and shift away from just being a series of battles) is the only thing that has made me interested in the Pokemon Anime in years.
Only a passing mention, but it was still kind of weird to hear NPR run an article on the Pokemon World Championships this morning. No real details other than "people from all over the world are gathering in Washington D.C. to play Pokemon together", but still.
The most interesting thing to me was that their choice of a vox-pop was a mother of two who brought her two sons to participate and "is an avid player of Pokemon Go herself", which feels like evidence that Pokemon Go was the major turning point where Pokemon might become something worth mentioning in the broader (non-gaming) culture. (To clarify: Pokemon is, of course, one of the largest media franchises of all time, but it still isn't the kind of thing that makes the morning news on NPR unless the moral guardians are Deeply Concerned about something.)
My favorite musical instrument is the air-raid siren.
This trailer makes me super stoked about Sword and Shield's online/competitive modes. There isn't really anything "huge" here per-se (some new abilities, some new items), but they've all got big implications for the competitive game, the way they are being more forthright in communicating it, and such, makes me optimistic that Game Freak is serious when they say that they're taking competitive balance and stuff into serious consideration as they are developing these new games.
Seeing the reactions on twitter etc. re: stuff like Rental Teams, Ranked Battles, really hammers home that, even though none of this stuff is new, TPCI has been so poor at communicating and showcasing their key features in the past that they might as well be new for a ton of people. Good for them for putting it in the forefront.
AAAAAND one of my big requests, some sort of prize for playing battles online, is there!!!! They listened to me!!!!
I think it's easier to breed for a shiny than to try to reset.
Doesn't resetting use whatever the super terrible baseline chance of shiny is, like 1/4000 or whatever? With breeding you can improve your odds slightly.

I love everything about the news.

He makes a very convincing angry old woman.
Also Marnie is the first cool looking rival we've had since Gen V.
Hopefully there are more non-original 151 Galar regionals.
Also I like to imagine he just says "bully!" all the time instead of his name.

Gamefreak are driving me crazy by witholding the Farfetch'd evolution reveal from me now.
Give it to me.
This Weezing won't actually ever attack. He'll just hire people to murder striking miners battle opposing Pokémon trainers in his stead.
Boosts the amount of money you make at the end of battle for every baby pokemon you have in your party but they take damage every turn.

Mind! I don't mean to say that I know, of my own knowledge, what there is particularly dead about a door-nail."
