The problem is that you're thinking too much. Just because the game throws a high-level gym at you, doesn't mean you're having a hard time. Gyms are supposed to be tough.

guys, when is gender determined for an egg. before you get it or before you hatch it?
Before you get it. Once you get an egg, the gender/nature/IV's and all that random stuff are already locked in. Reseting before it hatches won't change anything. So if you don't get what you were looking for, you'll have to get another egg.
