Right. Is that why in the Pokemon tourney were banning certain pokemon? Why is that? That SHOULD NOT be necessary. Like I said, in Dawn of War do we ban certain races?
If the game were created for only tournament play then the inclusion of pokeymans that would be banned from tournament play would, yes, be silly and evidence of a flaw in the system.
But, in my understanding, the tournament scene is secondary to the One Player game. So, as is sensible, Nintendo built the game primarily focused on single player and so pokeymans were created which are removed from the tournament scene in order to accomodate that crowd.

You do realize that you are taking issue with pokemon tournaments, right? I mean...it's pokemon.
Maybe I should explain. I'm very, very new. I stopped after Gold and now I'm practically obsessed again. I love it.
So I like to understand all the elements of the games I'm playing, and some just don't sit right with me. If I want to be the best, I need to deal with this EV bullshit that isn't even tracked in-game for me to read? I need to find people who own Emerald, FR/LG and the other versions if I even hope to get them all?
"Catching them all" used to be feasible and now it's a huge time pit. How feasible it is to get them all is ridiculous, not to mention it will require people trusting you to trade back. I don't even care so much about competitive play as I do getting them all eventually, something that looks stupidly hard.
I don't know, I'm annoyed. The game is great, it's just the flaws are glaring.
Ahhh HAH! Using Dittos against Ditto. That'll teach you to transform into something like Wobuffett and making me fight you for 10 minutes doing no damage to each other. You can only transform into yourself now.

It's like that Season 1 or 3 episode where ash battles a metapod with his metapod.
I liked that episode. It showed Misty sunbathing...

Metapod, use harden! *5 hours later* Metapod, keep going! We've almost got him! Then later it evolved into Butterfree. And then he let it go and it mated and then died
And Misty should be arrested for those short shorts. No boy can resist them when they're in the age group that show is targeted at.
I liked the epic camera angles they used in that episode and, if i remember correctly, the number of lense flares. It was so tense...would metapod beat metapod? Who could become the hardest? Why was Misty sunbathing in the....

ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooh. She's sunbathing...and they are using harden....
I get it now.
May and Hikari (Dawn) have nothing on Misty.
It's okay to lust after her now, since from the time she debuted on the show, she's probably in her 20s by now.
And leading the gym left vacant by her worthless, worthless sisters. She's a working girl.

Right. Is that why in the Pokemon tourney were banning certain pokemon? Why is that? That SHOULD NOT be necessary. Like I said, in Dawn of War do we ban certain races?
Certain tournaments and rulesets (like the Prime Ball rules in Stadium/Battle Revolution) don't bar their use. It's up to the participants and these days it's more often done to inject some variety into the matches (in that a lot of people will go for TEH UBARZ and then get thrashed to a man because one guy uses almost no legendaries but knows precisely how to build a team to kill them all, sweeping the tournament without effort.)
The only truly broken monster is arguably Wobbuffet, and that's more due to game design flaws in the Pokemon itself than it is to statlines or anything.
Plus, if they use Battle Revolution rules there's YET ANOTHER layer of strategy. You have a team of six monsters... and then you pick three of them out of the six, anonymously, as does your opponent. There's a layer to the game before it even starts.
You really can't understand until you've tried it for yourself, but believe me, Pokemon most certainly can be played competitively.

I don't think they are flaws. I think that is part of the appeal. If everyone could get every pokemon after 24 hours of dedicated play then the game wouldn't be enjoyable. It wouldn't be impressive to catch them all.
The argument that everything needed to be the best should be contained in one location is just foolish. Any strategy game requires outside reading. Hell, pretty much any computer game requires outside reading to know the tricks of playing. Pokemon, World of Warcraft, Magic the Gathering, Disgaea. NO ONE is going to unlock everything in those games without some outside assistance.
I think the challenge is what makes it fun. Digging around on forums to find someone with a Mew who will trade? That is fun. It's enjoyable. It makes the effort worthwhile. Linking up to older games to transfer pokemon? That's a good idea. It keeps those games viable, it makes the time spent playing them worth while. I spent time leveling pokemon in sapphire and now I can transfer them over. That makes me happy. The time wasn't wasted before.
And if a person wants to go out and buy ranger and play it to unlock that egg and then carry it around? Great. Have fun! But if someone doesn't want to put forth the time and effort required to get that egg? Then, well, the egg is not for them.
No one is actively preventing you from catching them all. You just have to decide to do it and you have to put forth the effort. That's what makes it a game. That's what makes it a challenge.
If Ash became best pokeymaster ever in episode 10 then the series would end and that would be that. But the series keeps going, he keeps trying. The games keep going, they keep adding more to it.
It's how the series works. It's how the world works.

I think you're obsessing over this stuff too early. All of these things that you mentioned aren't even supposed to be taken into consideration until you finish the game. I mean, yes, if you want to be the best you have to EV train, but that's the same of any game ever. If you want to be the best, you need to learn the system. The real beauty of this game is you don't need to the best to do anything in it.
Maybe I should explain. I'm very, very new. I stopped after Gold and now I'm practically obsessed again. I love it.

I'll give you EVs not being tracked or explained in the game. I wish this was made more transparent.
Catching them all isn't hard at all though, especially on the PA forums. All you have to do is ask nicely and I bet you can get a ton of FRLG/RSE Pokemon. Hell, I've been given a Torchic, a Magnemite and a Squirtle for a song and dance, practically. Plus, remember that a TON of Pokemon are unlocked once you get the National Dex; most Pokemon are in fact capturable on the D/P carts.
Is there no six on six in PBR? I don't like 3 on 3. :[
I have a Wobby team planned up because a lot of people don't agree with it being cheap.
It's exactly like Stadium. 6 on 6 is an option, as is 3 on 3 pick from 6.
Also, Remote Transfer Forbidden is so hot :winky:
Anyway, summation: yes Pokemon can be played competitively, and no it isn't really going to be that hard to catch 'em all if you're a PA forums member and aren't a jackass.

Is that Misty?
Yes. Yes it is. They also had a scene where they peeked in on her in the hot springs so.... yeah that's totally not safe to link here.
Well, now. Nintendo really knows how to attract it's player base early with collectible critters and then hold onto them with suggestive themed comics.

Well, I am four badges in on my first Pokemon game, I have seen over half of the Sinnoh pokes, own over a 1/3 of them, and have a lvl 41 flaming monkey.
I regret buying this game. It's taking up way too much of my free time.

I dunno. I am not worrying about any of that nonsense and I am still having a blast. I am not trying to play a competitive game... I am trying to gather pokes. I am more interested in the community aspect of online than the competitive aspect.
