Pokemon General Discussion Thread: Hot Ditto action inside.

THIS IS FOR SINGLE-PLAYER/GENERAL DISCUSSION. FOR BATTLES AND TRADING, HEAD TO THE WI-FI THREAD

010we0.jpg

Hi, it's Professor Oak again, and I'm here to talk about...

faux5lj8.jpg

...I mean

new_dp_starters.jpg

Diamond and Pearl, the 4th Generation in the long-standing Pokemon series!

Many things have changed since the days of Kanto.

First, there is an all new world:

Mpa_of_Shinou.jpg

with all new gym leaders, trainers, and of course, Pokemon.

In fact, there's 493 of them now! Take a look here: http://serebii.net/pokedex-dp/

And what's more, almost all of them are obtainable between the two versions. The only unobtainables are:

RBY Starters
GSC Starters
RSE Starters
Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres
Entei, Raikou, Suicune
The Regis
Mewtwo, Mew, Lugia, Ho-oh, Latias, Latios, Groudon, Kyogre, Rayquaza, Jirachi, Deoxys

Other than that, you are set with one version!

"But wait! What about version exclusives?"

Ah, young trainer, we now have...

pkmnwifi1qjgenthft2.gif

Wi-Fi Trading!

And not only that, we also have Wi-Fi battling. Not only can you obtain almost every Pokemon, but you can spar with anyone, anytime as well!

For those who lack wi-fi, here are the exclusives: http://serebii.net/diamondpearl/exclusives.shtml

Now there's a reason for you keeping your GBA versions: unlocking Pokemon! After obtaining the Sinnoh Dex (which consists of only SEEING every Pokemon on this list: http://serebii.net/diamondpearl/shinoudex.shtml), you pop in a GBA game and a handful of Pokemon become available for catching! The list of unlockables are here: http://serebii.net/diamondpearl/gbapokemon.shtml

Speaking of GBA versions, there is now a way to transfer your old Pokemon into Diamond and Pearl! Be warned though: once they go to DP, they won't return. Find out more information here: http://serebii.net/diamondpearl/3rdgentrade.shtml

n060615dp17gv4.jpg

The Night/Day system returns as well (which can be manipulated with the DS's clock, so no more staying up at night just to catch that Hoothoot).

No more are the days of types being relegated to Special or Physical status. Now when Pikachu uses Volt Tackle, it won't be a Special attack, but a Physical one.

List of attacks and their new status: http://serebii.net/attackdex-dp/

Not only that, but new abilities have also been added: http://serebii.net/diamondpearl/abilities.shtml

Of course, for the advanced trainer, there are new items to use when EV training, as well as helpful tools for breeding. Don't know what EVs are? This should get you going: http://serebii.net/pokedex-rs/ev.shtml

There is much more to learn about Diamond and Pearl! Of course, if you have any more questions, my assistants would be happy to help.

16720is3.jpg

Hope to see you soon!

So, two people in this thread mentioned their wife or gf having a ds and a game to do underground chat with. Both of you, your new purpose in life is to get ahold of a Spiritomb and a Ditto and BREED that sucker for the rest of us.

Oh, and who was looking for Burmys and Wormadons? I have a few from getting the Macho Brace I can toss or pass around.

I could do it as well, but I need a Ditto. I have 4 pokemon games between my brothers and me.

By the way, could I get added to the friend code list?

I mean, how about that pokemon? I hear it's selling well.

On a real note, apparently the Battle Tower scales your pokemon down to level 50 if they are above. I didn't know that. Really neat.

Serebii.net says that Heatran can be either male or female even though it's a legendary and it can't breed. Is this because there are differences in a male and a female Heatran sprite-wise, or is this just a mistake?

I've never... pokémon'd. This game does looks interesting, especially with the addition of the online mode.

How is the combat? Is there any strategy to it, or is it mostly a matter of choosing a correct (in a paper-rock-scissor sense) with a high level?

Tentative mini-FAQ for common questions here:

Q: I've been gone from the games for a while, what are natures and abilities?
A: Natures are pokemon personalities. There are 16 of them and they are randomly assigned. Four of these are neutral, the other twelve each raise one stat by 10% while lowering another by 10%. For instance, Adamant pokemon have a 10% boost to Attack and a 10% penalty to Special Attack.
Abilities are skills native to a type of pokemon. These can have a variety of effects, such as boosting stats under certain conditions or resisting certain status conditions. Some pokemon may have two abilities native to the species which will be randomly assigned, others have abilities that will change upon evolving.

Q: What are some good pokemon to learn HM moves?
A: Bidoof can learn Cut and Rock Smash. Its evolution, Bibarel, can learn Strength, Surf, Waterfall, and Rock Climb on top of that. Kricketune can learn Cut, Strength, Rock Smash, and Flash. Just about any Flying pokemon can learn Fly and Defog.
Some also like using Drifloon as it can learn Defog, Cut, and Flash. Drifloon can learn Fly on top of that.

    Q: How can I rename a pokemon?
A: If you didn't rename a pokemon you caught or hatched, there's a Name Rater NPC in Eterna City that you can talk to change its nickname. You cannot do this for pokemon you received in trades.

Q: How do I delete an HM move?
A: Canalave City has a Move Deleter NPC. He is the only way to get rid of HM moves. He also appears to not take visitors at night.

Q: How do I relearn a move I overwrote/I see a move listed for this evolution with no level associated with it that I want to learn
A: Pastoria City has a Move Relearner NPC that will teach old moves for a Heart Scale (found in the Underground).

Q: What role does pokemon gender play?
A: For the most part, nothing but a few things are affected.
Some abilities and moves only work on pokemon of the same or opposite gender.
A few pokemon, namely Combee and Burmy, evolve into different forms or don't evolve at all depending on their gender.
For the sake of breeding, the female pokemon is the one that determines the species of the child. The exception is when Ditto is evolved in breeding with a male or a genderless (but non-legendary) pokemon in which case the non-Ditto pokemon always determines offspring species. Don't ask how Ditto breeds with genderless pokemon, all we can theorize is that there is disgusting squishiness involved.

Q: What the hell are these IVs and EVs that I some of you addicts occasionally mention?
A: IVs = Individual values. These are sometimes referred to as a pokemon's genes. They're randomly generated modifiers to each of a pokemon's base stats. These can be bonuses or penalties and are why two pokemon of the same species and nature can have different stats. When breeding, three of these are randomly passed down from the parents to the child.
EVs = Effor values. These are more complicated. These are a type of experience that adds directly to a pokemon's stats on top of what it would get from its base values, levels, and IVs. When defeated, every pokemon gives one or more EV to each pokemon receiving experience for the battle. Which stats the EVs go to depends on the pokemon defeated. For instance, pikachu is a fast little bugger and gives Speed EVs. There's a cap on how many EVs a pokemon can recieve total and a maximum that can be applied to a given stat.
EVs are why trained pokemon have higher stats than wild pokemon of the same species. A knowledgeable player can use EVs to specialize their pokemon to fit a certain role, such as a speedy attacker.
Vitamins work by giving the recipient pokemon EVs in a given stat. Consulting an FAQ is highly recommended as there is no way one can memorize all the EVs each pokemon you can fight gives.

Will edit to add more if I find other quests being asked repeatedly.

While the battling is still the same, they've kinda switched up the stat system.
What used to be that special attack or attack were determined by the move type, now it's such that it's determined based on wither or not it's a physical move.
IE: Fire Punch is considered a physical attack, and Flame Thrower is considered a special attack.

Which is a nice change for things.. course they could have done more.

Also, pokemon abilities can play a huge part. This new game has a whole bunch of crazy new abilities and interesting new attacks.

    Depends on how you play.

It can be as deep as constantly trying to guess your opponents next move, and making it as ineffective as possible, until they slip up and give you a chance.

Or it can be as simple as "This type is weak to that. Let's attack it with that."

After 50 they will stop listening until you get 7 badges. Then the limit is 70. Once you get 8, the limit is 100 (the level cap).
