Need help finding video/graphic card drivers on ASUS Laptop

Gnome-InterruptusGnome-Interruptus Registered User regular
So first things first, the reason for me looking for drivers is I want to play "Total War: Warhammer" on my laptop, but the game gives me a message about my drivers being out of date.

I have tried updating any drivers I could find from the ASUS website, but it is painful to crawl through, and I'm not even sure if they have the most recent version there.

I have also tried going directly to the video card manufacturers website, but because the video card is in the laptop, they suggested I go there.

Can anyone point me to a link with the most up to date driver?

System:
ASUS X751L
8GB memory
Win8 x64
i7-4500U

Current video driver is:
Intel(R) HD Graphics Family
2014-12-15
10.18.14.4062

Thanks

    https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/75460/Intel-Core-i7-4500U-Processor-4M-Cache-up-to-3-00-GHz-

Should be the second link. These drivers are much more recent, but it's still possible that they won't have the level of directx support necessary to play your game.

Edit: it's also possibly the third link, depending on your version of windows.

I tried the 3rd link, since I'm running Win8, but received an error message that "This installation package is not supported by this processor type"

I tried running the Intel System Identification and got:

    SYSTEM INFORMATION

    Computer Manufacturer ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC.
    Computer Model X751LA
    Operating System (O/S) Microsoft Windows 8.1 (build 9600), 64-bit
    Operating System Build (O/S) 9600
    Operating System (version) 6.3.9600
    System RAM 8.0 GB

    GRAPHICS INFORMATION

    Graphics Product [1] Intel®HDGraphics4400
    Graphics Driver Version 10.18.14.4062
    3D Acceleration Yes
Hardware Transform & Lighting Support Yes
    Video Memory 1.8 GB
    Vertex Shader Support 5.0
    Pixel Shader Support 5.0
    Microsoft DirectX* Version 11.0
I checked the ASUS website, but their driver is even older than the one I am using, and told me so when I tried to install it just to make sure.

I am at my wits end here, updating a driver should not be this difficult on a computer I bought brand new 2 years ago.

EDIT: Fuck, my bad, hit the wrong download link, trying again.

EDIT2: New error message: "The driver being installed is not validated for this computer. Please obtain the appropriate driver from the computer manufacturer."

Will try seeing if there is a work around. Will definitely advise any future purchases to not be from ASUS. :bigfrown:

Can you download this, extract the zip and run cpuz_x64.exe, screenshot the cpu and graphics tabs and post them here?

Here are the specs from the CPU-Z app

I tried uninstalling the current driver, and seeing if I could install / update to one of the downloads, but no joy there. Got errors about having the wrong file system? Ugh, eventually got it to reinstall the factory driver (10.13.xxx) then updated that to the recent one (10.18.14.4062). Absolutely cannot seem to get the most current one (15.36.31.4414).

Did you download the 32 or 64 bit versions of the drivers from intel's site?

The first time it was the 32 bit version, once I realized my error, I have been downloading and trying to use the 64 bit versions (both the app & zip versions).

Same message about there being a custom manufacturer driver installed and to contact them for an update.

Ok, uninstall the gpu driver and restart. Run the utility again and see what happens.

If I try to manually install the driver as per the instructions here:
    https://www-ssl.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/graphics-drivers/000005629.html

I get a message that the most current driver is already installed, when I browse the list of approved drivers it only shows the original factory driver and the currently installed one.

Something is configured to only accept drivers from ASUS as valid drivers, and ASUS has dropped the ball and stopped releasing drivers since 2014 it seems. Their most recent version is 10.18.10.3960

Out of curiosity, what happens if you tell windows to search for a new version?

  • Gnome-InterruptusGnome-Interruptus Registered User regular
I get a message that it is already up to date.

Thank you for all your help, but I am going to leave it as is for now, and maybe bang my head against this wall again at a later date.

I'm wondering if I might be better off paying for an upgrade to Windows 10, and if that might free me from this ASUS hell.

Really regret not taking the free upgrade, but ironically enough the reason I didn't upgrade my laptop was because I didn't want to try and find all the correct drivers for a new OS.

Sucks that we couldn't fix it. Technically your machine meets the minimum specs, so it should be able to work, but even the more recent driver is 2 years old.

  • Gnome-InterruptusGnome-Interruptus Registered User regular
Okay, finally managed to finangle together a fix.

Used the ZIP file from the link you provided, then used the instructions from here to get it installed:
    http://www.windowscentral.com/how-install-intel-beta-graphics-drivers-surface

    Now have:
    10.18.14.4414
    2016-03-23

Which is progress, so thank you so much!

That is the most current one. Only the last 4 numbers matter.

    Does the game run now?
