So it took me a while but I've realized I need a macbook mouse. Anyone want to recommend a nice wireless mouse for macbook work? A couple people have mentioned the mighty mouse but I don't really want to go that pricey. However if you think it's definitely worth it I'm open to its consideration.

Any of these should be fine. I have the 5th one down, and it's nice and responsive.

Also, I switched my Quicksilver and Spotlight hotkeys because I use Quicksilver way more than I use Spotlight.

How do you mean, duplicated? Like, Imported twice?

I know when importing downloaded stuff it gets duplicated if you drag the playlist file in as well as the mp3s.

I just acquired an iPod Video, which is a considerable upgrade from my iPod mini. I would rather like to have all my photos on it (partly as a backup, partly as just to have them on hand). The hard drive on my laptop, however, is too small to have all my photos on it, so I can't simply do a regular sync (as once I synched again, with the photos not there, they would be removed from the iPod. Is there a third party application that will allow me to add photos onto the iPod in the requisite .ithm format in the manner I want?

    I'm running OSX.

Your iPod as a backup device for photos seems like but is not agood idea. How often would you put a real hard drive in your pocket and take it all over the place with you? Probably not very often, you wouldn't want to break it afterall. How often would you put an iPod in your pocket and take it around with you? Probably quite often because it's a media player! You're far more likely to break an iPod than you are a dedicated external drive used for backups. Bite the bullet and either buy a backup hard drive or back up to DVD/CD and save yourself the heartache.

That being said, iTunes give you the option of storing the original photo on the iPod, deselect that option in the Photos tab of your iPod options. Since the iPod only has a 320x240 screen iTunes makes resized copies of all of your photos before storing them on the iPod so the iPod itself doesn't have to scale them.

I already do back up to DVD; those that aren't on the laptop are on the computer at home as well. I'd just like to use the iPod as another basket to keep some of my eggs in. I agree that using it as the only backup would be less than ideal (though it would still be better than nothing at all - and if it did break, you'd notice quickly).

Panther was released in October and no back-to-school promotions were run i.e., don't expect such a thing to happen. The release date will likely be announced sometime over the summer and it isn't like everyone knows it is supposed to be released in the fall. If your purchase is contingent on getting Leopard pre-installed it's not going to be that hard to figure out when such a machine will be available.

    Oof.
OK, so I'm pretty sure that my Hard Drive is poked on my MBP. I try loading iPhoto and it just stalls. My HD starts making "clicking" noises.

So I tried backing up my files to an external Hard Drive and it keeps stopping at different files (depending on what I'm backing up, so movie, songs, pics etc.) and cant continue...

The only other clue is that I recently managed to ruin my bootcamp partition (the XP side - my fault) and so I used bootcamp assistant to remove my XP partition. This was about a day before things went pear shaped. So, my question is:

Could a format help? or do you think its definitely a Hardware issue? As I type, the HD isnt making any noise, but iPhoto will freeze when I load it still.

Will the Disk Utility let me know for sure if its a hardware issue?

Wow, I feel like an idiot.

I've always wished Safari had a confirm dialog for Command-Q, cuz when you have three windows with ten tabs each it couldn't possibly be farther in meaning from Command-W. I finally got the bright idea to just open up the .nib and change the damn key.

    controlq.png

That is going to save me so much unnecessary heartache.

FYI, Safari Three fixes this problem by asking if you want to Quit when multiple windows/tabs open, which is a godsend.

Stupid question: I want to get the $1,300 MacBook, but with a 160gb hard drive instead of the default. Since a quick search of Newegg says that it's cheaper to let Apple do it, is there a way to do this through an Apple Store or do I have to order online? I'd rather get it from a store if it means a shorter wait, but I don't know what their deal is for doing hardware upgrades in-store.

My Macbook has been freezing up today, just goes dead. The mouse is moveable but wont click on anything, just frozen really.

Happened twice today, once after using keynote and leaving the machine for a minute, come back and nothing responds (except the pointer) and when I was alt-tabbing earlier, it froze with the colourful spinny thing. Only fix is to hold the power button for a few seconds and start back up.

Is my Macbook borked? Or was i just unlucky this afternoon? It does tend to be carried around in a bag sleeping in it's padded sleeve though... And I still have the years free applecare on it.

I quite like quicksilver - I'm not a power user by any means, but it makes opening apps a breeze.

    Hmm, Skype? Acrobat reader etc.

Most of my apps depend very much on what I do...

I got Flip4mac which allows me to watch wmv files in my browser.

Maybe a second browser, for the odd occasion when Safari doesnt work properly (Oh god apple, why cant you make it work with gmail properly!?!)

I'm curious in what way Safari borks Gmail. Mine works great.
