So, I just picked up a macbook for University next year. Already have Adium, Azureus and VLC, what are some other necessary programs to pick up?
I quite like quicksilver - I'm not a power user by any means, but it makes opening apps a breeze.
Hmm, Skype? Acrobat reader etc.
Most of my apps depend very much on what I do...
I got Flip4mac which allows me to watch wmv files in my browser.
Maybe a second browser, for the odd occasion when Safari doesnt work properly (Oh god apple, why cant you make it work with gmail properly!?!)
I'm curious in what way Safari borks Gmail. Mine works great.
Wuzzit do?
Oh, its only the advanced functions that dont work properly. The ability to see and chat with other gmail users via the inbuild IM function. And editing text... There are no Bold, Size, Colour options within safari. Other than that its fine. And to be honest - I just set up apple mail to handle my gmail. That works perfectly.
Sometimes movies play in Safari, and sometimes they open in quicktime (when I can plainly see there is a window in safari it should be showing in). Is there a setting somewhere to get it to always play in safari instead of opening a new quicktime window?

So what are my options for a free excel replacement on OS X, aside from Open Office?

Google Docs? I use that, but not for any real work.
there's NeoOffice, and some other program that I forgot that I promised myself to try out. are you trying to take school notes? or is this something else?

I'd do openoffice in parallels, probably will perform faster than OpenOffice Mac
When you connect a shuffle, iTunes will fill it with random music. Is there a way to create a (smart?) playlist that mimics that function for other iPods? And if so, can you set it to include X number of songs, or X megabytes?

I want to buy a shiny new MacBook Pro this weekend when I go to the States, but my wife says "no."
Unless you have dependants, or you won't be able to pay the bills if you do... it's your money, so why does she get to have a say?
Uh, when you're married, your money becomes BOTH of your's money. Union and all that?
And this is why I am of the opinion that in any union, whether it be for love or business, that involves the joining of money, one should keep their own funds separate. You make an agreement, you put a certain amount aside for whatever you joined your funds for, the rest is yours to do what you wish with. If that happens to include trading it for pennies at the bank, melting them down and taking a searing hot copper bath to really cleanse the pores, then I won't judge.
for parallel/boot camp users, what kind of security do you guys use? i use parallels right now, and i've only done windows updates and use firefox (i only use parallels to code for matlab, so i only go to a school site, no major surfing, IM)
i'm also a bit sad to hear that parallels 3.0 came out ~2 weeks after i bought 2.0, and the upgrade is $50. the big change i've heard is of 3D graphics, anyone have any experience with that? is it close to competing with boot camp?
so i've never heard about this before, or bothered to check, but it seems you can use your student discount for applecare, $183 for piece of mind on my macbook

why won't Delicious Library add my Incredibles DVD
I type in the UPC, it says "lookup failed"
I type in the title, it gives me choices, I click my version (2-disc special), and then it says "lookup failed"
I did a system update yesterday, and now every time I turn on the computer it says that I don't have the hardware for that update. How do I tell it that it's ok and it doesn't need to tell me, etc etc.

So, bar me reading this entire thread or sifting through Apple's keynotes, do we have a (at least vague) release date for 10.5?

They said October. No solid date though.

It's been so long since I've posted here, I've removed my signature since most of what I had here were broken links. Shows over, you can carry on to the next post.

since this part of the thread is already OT - if you really want to keep seperate funds, anything you invest or own before a marriage is still just yours. Any money or assets (or debts) acquired after said marriage are shared by both people. Legally.
So while I was riding my bike today my water bottle opened up and got my iPod pretty wet.
I'm letting it dry, I unfortunatly could not turn it off as the one button that wasn't responding was the power button, but the little unhappy iPod icon came up and it seems to have powered itself down.
I'm afraid to touch it, but should I hold out any hope of it returning to me from the dead? Or should I think about buying another one...
I installed it a bit ago, and pretty much forgot about it. I just went to search a page. This is me: "Hey, where's the— oh. Hey, that's pretty neat. OH MY GOD THAT IS SO AWESOME."
Also the text area close confirm is neat. So far that's just been annoying, but I'm sure its time will come.

For some reason the search function doesn't accept my first key stroke after Apple+F. Really annoying, but I'm loving it so far. Also the spell checker is a nice feature also.

There's an aerosol can of gunk called "tech spray" they have at my local Fry's that we use for the screen with a microfiber cloth.
That's what they use at the Apple store to get rid of smudges from touchy feely customers.

My friend gave me some sheetmusic, but my PC is broken so I can't use them on there

Cool, thanks. I was going to upgrade my mac mini's RAP to 2 gb before 10.5 came out, and this gives me plenty of time.
