I was fiddling around with Archive.org and I decided to bring up Apple's site from the week I bought my first Mac.

Holy shit things have gotten cheap.

    iMac 20" $2199
    1.25Ghz G4
    NVIDIA 5200FX
    256MB of PC2700 ram
    80GB HDD

No wonder I settled on an eMac.

    Also: iPods starting at $299!

    Like really fucking hard

But 2 gigs of RAM makes Vista sing and lets me run OSX and XP at the same time flawlessly

So, I just picked up a macbook for University next year. Already have Adium, Azureus and VLC, what are some other necessary programs to pick up?

I quite like quicksilver - I'm not a power user by any means, but it makes opening apps a breeze.

    Hmm, Skype? Acrobat reader etc.

Most of my apps depend very much on what I do...

I got Flip4mac which allows me to watch wmv files in my browser.

Maybe a second browser, for the odd occasion when Safari doesnt work properly (Oh god apple, why cant you make it work with gmail properly!?!)

I'm curious in what way Safari borks Gmail. Mine works great.

    Wuzzit do?

Oh, its only the advanced functions that dont work properly. The ability to see and chat with other gmail users via the inbuild IM function. And editing text... There are no Bold, Size, Colour options within safari. Other than that its fine. And to be honest - I just set up apple mail to handle my gmail. That works perfectly.

Sometimes movies play in Safari, and sometimes they open in quicktime (when I can plainly see there is a window in safari it should be showing in). Is there a setting somewhere to get it to always play in safari instead of opening a new quicktime window?

There's an aerosol can of gunk called "tech spray" they have at my local Fry's that we use for the screen with a microfiber cloth.

That's what they use at the Apple store to get rid of smudges from touchy feely customers.

When you connect a shuffle, iTunes will fill it with random music. Is there a way to create a (smart?) playlist that mimics that function for other iPods? And if so, can you set it to include X number of songs, or X megabytes?

And this is why I am of the opinion that in any union, whether it be for love or business, that involves the joining of money, one should keep their own funds separate. You make an agreement, you put a certain amount aside for whatever you joined your funds for, the rest is yours to do what you wish with. If that happens to include trading it for pennies at the bank, melting them down and taking a searing hot copper bath to really cleanse the pores, then I won't judge.

for parallel/boot camp users, what kind of security do you guys use? i use parallels right now, and i've only done windows updates and use firefox (i only use parallels to code for matlab, so i only go to a school site, no major surfing, IM)

i'm also a bit sad to hear that parallels 3.0 came out ~2 weeks after i bought 2.0, and the upgrade is $50. the big change i've heard is of 3D graphics, anyone have any experience with that? is it close to competing with boot camp?

since this part of the thread is already OT - if you really want to keep seperate funds, anything you invest or own before a marriage is still just yours. Any money or assets (or debts) acquired after said marriage are shared by both people. Legally.

So while I was riding my bike today my water bottle opened up and got my iPod pretty wet.

I'm letting it dry, I unfortunatly could not turn it off as the one button that wasn't responding was the power button, but the little unhappy iPod icon came up and it seems to have powered itself down.

I'm afraid to touch it, but should I hold out any hope of it returning to me from the dead? Or should I think about buying another one... :(

    Dude!

    Safari 3 kicks ass.

I installed it a bit ago, and pretty much forgot about it. I just went to search a page. This is me: "Hey, where's the— oh. Hey, that's pretty neat. OH MY GOD THAT IS SO AWESOME."

Also the text area close confirm is neat. So far that's just been annoying, but I'm sure its time will come.

For some reason the search function doesn't accept my first key stroke after Apple+F. Really annoying, but I'm loving it so far. Also the spell checker is a nice feature also.
