If you're having problems with the Finder behaving erratically, I would recommend downloading the excellent and free maintenance utility Onyx. It has a variety of scans and repair options that may clear up some of your problems. I was having some slowdown and generic icon problems with my Finder a few weeks ago, and Onyx cleared them up.
Also, I've been tossing around the idea of picking up a laptop, and have been seriously looking at the Macbook Pro line. I've just got a quick question for you guys. In terms of dual-booting Windows and gaming on it, would I really notice a difference between the 128 and 256 VRAM in the 15-inch models? Unless it would make a serious difference, I really doubt the $500 price difference is worth it. Any thoughts?
So I'm getting the new 15" Macbook Pro (The 2.4 GHz version) with 4 gigs of RAM. I was wondering if any of you could tell me how well it runs games like Half Life 2, Company of Heroes and Oblivion under Bootcamp (booting Vista). Could I play all of these games on the highest settings with the resolution maxed out to the notebook's native resolution?
While not the computer's main purpose, it is a deciding factor for getting it :P

Okay where are these scans and repairs? All I can find is optimization.

That's because the forms URL isn't penny-arcade.com/forums but forums.penny-arcade.com. I love safari.

I have a question.
Is there a way I can line up the icons on my desktop to the left instead of always being on the right?
I know I can do this manually but I always arrange them and they move back to the right.
I bought an iTunes song marked iTunes plus that was supposed to cost 1.39, instead I got a regular iTunes song and was charged 1 dollar. What the hell? I dont want this DRM bullshit
Actually, turns out my credit card was charged 1 dollar, but the song is the 256kbps iTunes Plus version... Hmmm

So AppleInsider is reporting that the new iMac to be announced next month will include a new keyboard that's more MacBook-like.
I'm not sure what to think of this as i want to get the next gen iMac, but i mean....does Apple not believe in a first party ergo keyboard? You'd think that they would as they're all touchy feely with the user experience.
Or am i just crazy to think that?

I think they're just too caught up in a cohesive, uniform aestheticism.
I'm sure this has already been done to death, but I've started using my MacBook (rev a) as my primary machine now and the fact that it is idling / browsing the internet at 53 degrees C really scares the shit out of me.
Is this normal?
Or more appropriately, what sort of temps do other people get. I am running the laptop with the lid closed, however, opening the lid produces a negligible change in temperature and suprizingly, the keyboard underneath is not warm.
My cpu idles at mid-50s also. Is this high? I don't know. I do believe OSX throttles down the fan pretty viciously, for aesthetic reasons I guess.
Also, if there's one thing that is amazing about OSX, its that almost every third-party program I've used so far has an excellent interface in comparison to windows equivalents. I've been trying out SOHO Notes and using Schoolhouse, and I am totally amazed at the prettiness of the UI. Everything just looks so clean and simple, as opposed the usual Windows clusterfuck of buttons, options and menus.

My keyboard is notebook like, not quite notebook, but not quite desktop, kinda in between. I love it, feels perfect to the touch, doesn't make my fingers tired after typing for a long time like my other desktop keyboard does.

Use a program called SMC Fan Control to manually control your fan. It supports multiple settings and settings for battery or charging modes. It drops the temperature pretty handily.
For example, my MBP (which is 1st gen, so I'm pretty sure also has very poorly applied thermal paste), is running at 48C on the CPU itself, 26C Ambient, using my "Balls Deep" setting, which turns up the fans all the way, which is still really not that loud.

Does running these tiny laptop fans "Balls Deep" have any negative effects? I'm really not trying to blow out my fan and pay to get it replaced.
I've already ordered a laptop cooling pad from amazon (they had one with a USB2.0 hub for 11 bucks the other day) and in the week it takes to get here, I just hope im not going to cook this thing

It's been so long since I've posted here, I've removed my signature since most of what I had here were broken links. Shows over, you can carry on to the next post.

I leave my computer running with the fans going at this speed whenever I do downloads and stuff overnight pretty much nonstop for ~1.5 days straight, maybe more than that at "Balls Deep" (which is just what I named my full-speed setting). Nothing has gone wrong for the past year I've been doing this.

So, I'm a first-time Mac user. I'm trying to get used to the new keyboard shortcuts and whatnot. Anyone have a link to a good list of useful shortcuts?
There's one in particular I'd like to know: In Windows, I can press Alt+D to shift the cursor's focus to the address bar of a web browser. Extremely useful. Is there a shortcut for that in OSX? Thanks.
Use the Mac OS X Help to look for more. I've found that unlike windows, the Help is actually helpful.
For your browser shortcut, in Safari you can press CMD+L for "open Location" which highlights the address bar.
Also keep in mind that unlike windows, for the vast majority of programs, Keyboard shortcuts are the same. I.E. "CMD+," nearly always opens an app's preferences. And in Firefox, CMD+L also highlights the address bar.
And if you want to have some fun: Try "Ctrl+CMD+opt+8" (doing it again reverses it...)
Finally, hold shift when activating expose/minimizing windows/doing cool UI stuff for super slowmo mode.

Finder is seeming to crash to the point where I can't use the dock, my functions keys or anything. Now, what is happening?
Also is there a scan disk program for macs?

I have, and its no different than any PC of similar specs.
Except that it gets really hot.
