By the end of this year? Unlikely. Earliest would be Macworld in January..., and I actually doubt that...
I just got my Touch today, actually, and I have over 15 gigs of music, so it won't all fit. But I've found it's forced me to sit and look at my music and see what I actually listen to and only sync that...which cut out nearly 2gigs of music...
Ah, I remember when I first started doing that. 2 gigs will only be the start, after a while I started getting really brutal on my collection. So many albums I kept complete just for the sake of keeping it complete. After a while, tracks that I NEVER listen to were gradually weeded out.
Mind you, I did just buy a 160 gig Classic yesterday under the pretense of using it as an external HDD for my increasingly cramped 60 gig PowerBook. It's sexy as all get out, and will keep me from wanting a Touch until they have some proper storage space on them.
so the time has finally come for me to get a new laptop. My almost-5 year old powerbook is on life support with a barely backlit display and a recently busted dvd drive. I'mma have to take the ol fella out back and introduce him to the shotgun
So I've been reading up on macbook pros, and I noticed that they are supposedly coming out with upgrades in Januaryish to go along with the new Intel processors. My question is this:
Is it worth the wait? How much of an upgrade is there from what i'd get now, to what i'd get in 4-6 months?
Neo Office (self explanatory) Default App (useful for setting, well.. default apps for stuff) Afloat (Allows you to set windows as always ontop or with certain levels of transparency.. this is actually really useful and spiffy) smc fan control (Useful for us Macbook owners)

Most Mac rumours you need to take with a serious grain of salt until around the month before Macworld.
It's a question of what it's worth to you: do you need a laptop now, or can you hold out? With just three months to go until Macworld, I'd do my best to hold on to what I've got, but if you have a specific need (ie. for school or business, or you watch a lot of DVDs), you'll have to buy. Either way, you're getting an excellent laptop.
Well yeah, I figured if I held out, it would be for macworld. I'm just curious as to how big an upgrade anything they pump out really would be. If it's big, I have no problem holding out. But if its minor, I can buy one tomorrow.

No-one has any idea about that unless you work for Apple R&D. Anything else you hear is a very unsubstantiated rumour.
So I'm thinking of getting an iPod Touch but some things hinder me.
1. I'm afraid it's a dumbed down version of the iPhone internet wise. I don't particularly care about the calendar that much but the internet yes.
2. The metal back scratching gnaws at me so bad because I want it to stay nice and shiny. Is there any way to prevent this?
3. 16 gb or 8 gb? I have 9.4 GB of music, but a lot of it I can do without. Any ideas guys?
4. If I buy it from the apple store, I have to pay 20 bucks worth of taxes whereas I can get it from Amazon for 399 plus 3.99 for one day shipping. Suggestions?
Also, has the negative black effect problem been taken care of yet?
What do you recommend in terms of warranty?

1. Safari is exactly the same as on the iPhone. However, there is no mail application on the iPod Touch.
2. Invisible Shield?
3. 16gb. ALWAYS buy the most space you can afford.
4. It seems like it, for the most part anyway.
Applecare for the warranty if you want one.

IIRC, gizmodo had a recent story about getting a retail swap for their 'negative black' displaying ipod Touch at an Apple Store. Allegedly, there was a defect either introduced in the 37th week (possibly 36th and 37th) of manufacturing, or at the very least, corrected after the 37th week. Part of the serial number reflects which week the product was manufactured, and if the story holds true throughout all stores, the employees there should be able to swap out one with a proper display for you.

Yeah, I've been researching it for a couple of days now but some people are still having trouble with Week 38 touches I've heard from some forums I've come across
I can't get a contract right now (without a $500 deposit because I'm stupid and probably gay).
So then I thought- I can a.) get an iPhone, pay $900 up front, $500 of which is refundable in a year, and pay $60 a month.
Or
I can b.) use my w810 with prepaid and get an iPod Touch for the screen size, wifi, etc. With a $100 prepaid kid, we're talking $500 total.
However.
I then realized "oh shit, why don't I just do this piecemeal" which led me to my ultimate (I thought) solution: get an iPhone and use it as my mp3 player, video player, wifi device, etc. etc. and use my w810 with prepaid for a voice plan until I can afford to splurge on the $500 deposit. This seems like a GREAT idea. The only downside I see is that I'm losing 8 GB of storage for my purchasing price, but this iPhone will eventually be my cellular device and so I'm willing to trade that $ for being able to carry only one device. But this leads to my one (fairly easily answered, I hope) question:
Is it possible to buy the iPhone and activate the AT&T plan for it whenever I wish at my leisure say, 6-8 months from now? Or is it impossible to purchase an iPhone without subsequent (and immediate) activation?
Also, as an aside: living in a big city (Philadelphia), how often am I to likely encounter wifi?

An iPhone is a brick without doing the iTunes activation, which involves setting up an account with AT&T.
I have heard of nefarious ways around this, but unless you are willing to void your gear, you need to set up an AT&T account to do anything with the iPhone.

Well, someone had to tell me. Back to the drawing board, I guess.

You can sign it up for a GoPhone plan if you want to go that route.

!!!
Is there any criteria that I need to meet other than failing the credit check? If this is so I am 100% in, I am completely willing to do GoPhone, I didn't think that was an option with the iPhone.
After some poking around on howardforums it would appear that GoPhone is possible with the iPhone. However, there is some confusion re: how to be offered said GoPhone plans. One tactic is (during activation) inputting a bogus SS#. Allegedly you will fail the credit check and be offered a GoPhone plan. Apparently this is being slowly curtailed, though? I'm wondering if it works for people who list real info but just have bad credit.
So I'm an AT&T customer and I want to buy an iPhone. Does activation require a two-year extension to my contract, or just tacking on the $20/month for a data plan?
Also, all you folks gabbing about NeoOffice: is it still as sluggish as OpenOffice is on most OSes?

Two more years
edit: the two years runs from the day you activate the iphone.
Does anyone here have an iPod Classic? Preferably an 80 gig one?
I got my iPod Touch, and it's really neat and all, but there are way more cons than I thought there would be. Mainly, I'm not happy with how short the battery life is, given it doesn't have a HDD. I started using it probably seven hours ago, didn't even use it the entire seven hours, and only played music (and goofed around with the web browser a bit), and the battery is already down to like, a quarter from a full charge. I also don't like that I can't change tracks or adjust the volume without pulling it out of my pocket.
So with all that in mind, does the iPod Classic actually match its stated battery life? Or is it like the iPod Touch where it falls short (as many reviews online have said)?

I have an iPod Video 80gig, the battery goes on for around 25 hours non stop for me.
As of right now I've decided to hold out for Macworld (or Leopard), but the second PA and the other sites I usually browse are officially blocked at work, I'm dropping some bucks on the new computer.
My girlfriend has an iMac, I think (the one where it's all in the screen) and wants to know if she could hook up a xbox 360 into it to for the display. I have no clue about what kind of inputs it has or if apple makes an adapter for this.

No video-in, so no. You would need to spend about $250 to get a USB TV tuner thingy with video-in, which I am guessing is more than you are willing to pay.
I've been using NeoOffice the past few days and while it loads quick and is pretty well laid out (Inspector is kinda dumb, i'm glad NeoOffice has regular options), it does tend to get bogged down after a lot of continuos use. I'm on a Macbook.
Is there another good video editing program for Macs that's somewhere between Final Cut and iMovie?
I got the new iLife, and I was all "ooh new iMovie maybe it will have new features and be better than the old one." Then I used it and it was stupider than the old version and basically doesn't let you do anything cool, and it's a bitch to find out where to tweak the settings.
Sooo looking for something else. I have a PowerPC iMac, just FYI.
You can download the older iMovie from Apple's website.
Final Cut Express is what you are looking for, but it's $300.
"Hip" Apple advertising videos are not included. Make your own! A dude scratching on a snowboard with an afro and listening to Jurassic 5 on his iPod and some guy filming him who is on a skateboard. Apple will surely buy it from you, and then you'll get your money back.
Thanks Lewisham, but I tried FC Express, and it told me and my video card to fuck off. Apparently it only works with certain video cards and mine is too old?
Was just wondering if there was anything else besides those two options. The original iMovie wasn't cutting it for me either, which was I was hoping the new one would actually have MORE features instead of LESS.
Has anyone had any experience with the new slim mac keyboard? I'm thinking of picking up a wired one for my MacBook Pro, since it's on a stand of sorts most of the time. Does the Apple key still double as the Windows key under Boot Camp? How is the overall satisfaction with it?
