Hmm, an interesting thing with that faction economy mod, when it distributes items to the factions and I remurder them for their gear, it seems to mark it as stolen. Like I’m picking up random silver crap and thalmor gear off bandits with the stolen flag.

I mean it kind of was stolen in a way, but the vendor didn’t care the first time, amirite?

So for anyone else doing conflicts and trusting MO2 to point out if textures are overlapping or something, I have some bad news. I asked an idle curiosity question in a discord and got an answer which made me realize that there's a decent shot I had stuff overwriting/not getting used without even realizing it, and now I get to explain for all of you!

So object appearance is mostly governed by mesh (polygons, etc), and textures. Either can be edited/overwritten (some stuff also has like...boundary boxes which involve ESP, and there's texture lighting and a bunch of shit I don't understand, but we'll ignore all that for now). Meshes are the polygonal framework, textures are the image applied to that framework to give an appearance. As mentioned previously, "loose" files always win over files packed in .bsas, and files lower in the load order on the left panel always win over ones higher in the load order. Except, it turns out, when a mesh is modified, it can also change what texture is pointed to. I will give a quick example:

    https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/62809

This is a dragonfly texture. I've used it for a long time, it looks nice. No one really gives a shit, you barely see the dragonflies, but it's a significant improvement over Vanilla. It's ONLY a texture, it does not modify the mesh. It only has conflicts with the .bsas included with the game.

    https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/34159

This is a NEWER dragonfly, released last month. It's higher polygon, I think it looks better, it's what I'm using NOW. It's lower in my load order. However, I noticed that it does not show a conflict with any other thing I have installed, just with the .bsa archive included with USSEP (for some reason?) which is on the mesh. The textures do not conflict.

And this happens because the vanilla texture is in textures/effects/critterdragonfly<#extension>, and the new one is in textures/dragonfly/<texturenames>. Presumably, the edited mesh points to the new location, which means the textures do not show up as conflicts. This is, of course, mildly horrifying my obsessiveness. :P I'm 99% certain it's not going to result in anything awful, just cases like the above where I happened to notice after being on the look-out for it, so I'm mostly going to ignore it, but just figured I'd give a heads up for anyone else going down this dark path as something to be aware of.

  • Jealous DevaJealous Deva Registered User regular
Yeah, apparently that is something of a safety feature to prevent someone from overwriting a texture intended for a new mesh with one for the vanilla mesh and either getting a red triangle or a mismatched texture abomination.

Texture paths can, and often are, baked into user-made .NIF meshes. Such models will ignore any texture paths set in the Creation Kit.

You know, its amazing to me going back and playing skyrim how totally unique it is as far as feeling like I’m running around in a world.

Games like assassins creed origins/odessy or witcher 3 have big open worlds (and really good ones in a lot of ways) but they don’t have that “cool stuff buried away everywhere” and “every noc has a story” feel that skyrim has. The earlier ES games were almost there but the tech just wasn’t entirely there yet for the variety of skyrim (though in a lot of ways some of the design was better). Fallout 4 tried but was just not a good world design at all.

I guess the closest thing I can think of to catching that same feeling is post-wastelanders Fallout 76?

honestly this is yet another reason I'm still sitting around going "someday, skywind will release," because having the much more interesting world of Morrowind with Skyrim's tech and a full decade of modder knowledge/tweaks behind it is gonna be awesome

I’ve never gotten why they haven’t been jumping all over remaking morrowind and oblivion.

I understand somewhat not wanting to offend/divide the playerbase or whatever. (Because you really couldn’t exactly make a game like Morrowind today mechanically). But still...

Oblivion honestly would be much easier to do because people aren’t going to argue much with updating oblivion gameplay and experience systems/etc to skyrim standards. I’d think an oblivion reimagining that had all the old quests and voice work but updated the things oblivion really needs - terrain, enemy variety, combat and leveling mechanics, oblivion gates - would be quite cheap to make and do really well.

It's actually a lot harder and would take many more resources than you're thinking. Just look at how long it took the Final Fantasy VII remake to happen, and that's ended up just part one of probably three or four. There's also the question of: is it worth piling that many dev resources into a project that probably won't sell as many copies as something new and fresh?

It's also arguably harder to remake those games mechanically than to make new ones. Take Morrowind with its weird roll to hit mechanic and broken spell creation system. If you change nothing you alienate new players who expect an experience similar to Skyrim, but every change is going to make part of the community froth with rage. There is no way to please everyone with a remake and you are almost guaranteed to piss off a significant part of the fanbase, many of whom are still angry after Fallout 76.

Yeah but for oblivion you have basically all the voice and script work done, a lot of the assets are basically fine or just need a retexture, plus you can reuse a lot of skyrim stuff. Sure its more work and cost than going from skyrim to skyrim se but it shouldn’t be anywhere near new game levels.

Damn, beyond skyrim bruma is pretty nice. I have run into a few rough spots here and there (Literally fell into the side of a mountain like it was daggerfall at one point), but the quests are really great, the voice acting is good, and it maintains that oblivion feel and tone.

If they can maintain the same level of quality throughout the whole continent that would be pretty amazing.

    I did another thing: https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/35910

Also, probably won't do a big "new stuff" post this month because it's all textures. 16 of the top 20 most endorsed mods of the past month are textures. A lot of which are from the guy who'd been stealing some textures, got banned, then reinstated provisionally.

So really, I'll just say: check out the parent mods for that patch collection, and then a couple other things of note:

https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/34681 - alternate ways of solving the Icerunner quest which don't involve you being an idiot
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/35568 - SkyUI theme that looks neat (this should probably make the above 17)
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/35785 - some facegen morphs that look good, but haven't dug into them?
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/35404 - Northbourne made an NPC replacer for all Whiterun folks and they look VERY good. It even includes some NPCs that WICO didn't even cover!
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/35806 - last one of the JKs Interiors so far to come out, Sleeping Giant Inn.

other than that....yeah, textures. They're nice looking textures, but just lots and lots of textures.

He did a lot of atrocities working for alduin, had a crisis of conscience, and switched sides and gave the nords the tools to fight back. So he did some shitty things a few thousand years ago but has the self awareness to know they were wrong and has actually made a concerted effort to do better. He himself admits that he has evil tendencies and should probably have been executed for them... but he is aware of that and has successfully controlled those tendencies for thousands of years. Also, there are going to be dragons one way or another, they have been hunted for thousands of years and there are still plenty running around in skyrim... so why not have them led or at least influenced by someone who understands the value of not being a dick? So my recommended character build for the starting Morrowind nerd is a custom class I like to call the Bastard ( or the Charlatan, if you want to be Rated G)

    Your MAJOR SKILLS should be:
    * Athletics (GOTTA GO FAST)
    * Acrobatics (JUMP GOOD)
    * Sneak (HA! Now you can't see me!)
    * Speechcraft (I roll to SEDUCE / Now you think I'm cool)
    * Security (Locks? What locks?)

    Your MINOR SKILLS should be:
    * Block (Taking damage is for nerds)
    * Restoration (I didn't take damage, fuck you)
    * A weapon skill you enjoy / fits your flavor (recommendation for BOW or SPEAR) (You do need to kill things, at some point)
    * An armor skill you enjoy / fits your flavor (Taking damage is for NERDS)
    * IDK WHATEVER. You want money pick Mercantile, you want Mark/Recall you pick Mysticism, do what you want (do what you want)

    Your ATTRIBUTES should be:

    * Luck, probably? (it's annoying to level and the bonus is good)
    * something based on whatever your other fave is

My only real additions to that list are
    1. Yes, absolutely take Mysticism. Mark/Recall are massively helpful.
    2. Take Alteration in place of Block for all that it adds to traversal. Levitate and Water Breathing are super useful for all the things you just can't access without them. Jump lets you get around far more quickly and (and improve your Acrobatics/Restoration leveling if you use it at a magnitude that returns a bit of fall damage each time). Feather comes in handy when you lose track of your encumbrance and suddenly can't move at all because you're two pounds over the limit.

I like Morrowind a lot but it does have kind of a big problem with focusing on making money and using trainers leading to character skill progression at like 100x the rate of just doing stuff. The vast majority of quest rewards are crap and the raise-skills-through-use system is wildly uneven. Hand-to-hand maxes out hilariously quickly while Alchemy, Speechcraft, and even Athletics probably never will through normal use. I have to use mods and set arbitrary rules for myself (like no training skills past a certain point) to force a balance between my min-maxing urges and actually experiencing/enjoying the game's content.

I just don’t worry too much about it? Its not oblivion, enemies don’t level that much with you, so if you mess up your stats you can always just go level more (unless you are somehow level capped and still having trouble, in which case go abuse alchemy and enchanting and you should fix it right up).

He's been a problem, and might be one in the future, but right now he's way down on the list. My Dragonborn was confident in her ability to take him if it became necessary, and also didn't appreciate being told what to do.
This came back to bite her later, as it was one of a few things which, in my headcanon/story, got her betrayed and murdered by her "allies" in a repeat of what happened to her (spiritual) ancestor Nerevar.

I mean, chances are good that if he's playing the long game, you won't be alive long enough to stop him, which is kinda their deal.

But also, fuck them, he's cool and they're not.

Even as an evil dragon, his attitude towards humans was not "eat all of them".

So I'm definitely not siding with the folks going "the only good dragon is a dead dragon". If you're gonna kill somebody because they possibly might do bad stuff down the road, you may as well just kill everybody everywhere because they've got the same potential. And none of them have spent an age of the world conquering their darker tendencies to help mankind, so I'd say the dragon is a hell of a lot more "good" than the people that want you to take his head.

    I never finished Skyrim.
I think I got to the part where they ask you to kill the good dragon.

He’s not good, is the thing.

    I mean, yes and no?
He did a lot of atrocities working for alduin, had a crisis of conscience, and switched sides and gave the nords the tools to fight back. So he did some shitty things a few thousand years ago but has the self awareness to know they were wrong and has actually made a concerted effort to do better. He himself admits that he has evil tendencies and should probably have been executed for them... but he is aware of that and has successfully controlled those tendencies for thousands of years. Also, there are going to be dragons one way or another, they have been hunted for thousands of years and there are still plenty running around in skyrim... so why not have them led or at least influenced by someone who understands the value of not being a dick? ...I legit did not know there was a way to resolve the Grey-Mane/Battleborn thing without raiding and freeing him yourself, this entire time.

Reading the description of that file just brings up everything I don't like about the Unofficial Patch makers.

If you started a cult that handed out the ability to shout your enemies to death and devour the souls of dragons for more power, I'd be willing to take a chance that you've moved beyond your long history of crimes against humanity in ages past.

Well, as long as you hand out the the voice powers at max level instead of making us work through them in stages.
