Dan complaining so much about the combat in Yakuza 0 is really dragging down my enjoyment of that series
He is really bad at it. Granted, it's not the best designed brawler, and he only plays it once a week, but still...

I kinda gave up on my resumption of my playthrough of Yakuza 2 earlier this year because I absolutely sucked at the combat. It had been several years since I played and I was about halfway through the game, and I didn't really want to start over.
Yeah Dan in the latest episode sounded like he was having a bad day. Alex was trying to ease him a bit but yeah Button mashing will only get so far. The combat system works well in Yakuza games, you just have to get a feel for it.
Maybe Alex or Vinny play the next game.

I might just skip to Yakuza 3 at this point, although I've heard it's not the best in the series. I own 2-5.
I enjoyed all of them. Yakuza 3 is a slow burn but it's still fun. I would highly recommend Yakuza 0 for any one interested in the series though Beast in the East has pretty much covered that.
3 is a good waypoint of sorts really and if they are making a remake of 2 from the ground up as rumors go then maybe pick it up then.

just watched the phil spencer segment from nite 2
i would pay cash money for a phil spencer and jeff gerstmann podcast when they just shoot the shit about the industry, particularly the mid 90s and early 2000s
To be fair, he did explain that he ended up passing because he submitted a big video editing project he had been making for a drinking game as a special final project.
In some places, that would just be called a thesis project.

Dan also wrote a shit ton of game reviews in college.
He decided he wanted to review games for a living, then did so over and over and over on his own time until you would be crazy NOT to hire him to do it.
I wasn't saying he didn't put in the work for his career, I'm saying he didn't put in the work for his degree. 2 different things.
Also recently, I realized that whenever you would hear GB staff members say "We don't just sit around playing video games all day!", it was usually Jeff/Vinny/Austin saying that. Which makes sense when you realize Jeff and Vinny are considered senior management, and Austin was running the Freelancers Program and the news department. Of course they didn't actually do that.
But you always hear Jeff say stuff like "Yeah Brad, I saw you playing Game X at your desk and it looked pretty cool", because I guess Brad doesn't get buried in the meetings that Jeff and Vinny do. Also in the recent 1099 podcast with Dan, he specifically stated that he stays far away from "the business side of stuff" and definitely does play games at his desk/all day.
brad's workload usually heavily depends on how much writing they're doing - he's generally been referred to as The Editor at giant bomb as far as reviewing your writing
Jeff has said as much lately that Giant Bomb, at least the Giant Bomb staff proper, doesn't really do writing anymore, except for rare one offs.
It's a shame, because they are all very good writers. I'll always remember them regretting that Ryan didn't get to write more reviews during his Memorial podcast, where they all start quoting his Pac Man CEDX review ("Pac Man Fever has been effectively weaponized")
I feel that Dan's toilet paper degree is a sore point for those that put in work commensurate to the cost of a college education.
Honestly, if you go into your degree and put a ton of effort into it with no idea why you're putting a ton of effort into it, you're going to come out unhappy. There are situations where you have to do a ton of work just to get through the degree, there are situations where doing a ton of work will be a benefit when you have the degree, and there are situations where anything more than the bare minimum effort is just a waste. Dan had the third and instead concentrated his effort in the things that actually got him jobs. Getting the degree was still super important in the US culture of resume-filtering algorithms, but it wasn't actually relevant to his credentials.
Okay, the conversation they are referring to in the tweets above is pretty great, and actually informative (because Dan doesn't know a thing, and everyone else does and is explaining it, natch)
Also they start the episode with an improv game because of Abby's improv experience, and I want to see how she handles Fiasco this year.
Has anybody else read the comments on the Night 3 video on the site? How can someone that ostensibly subscribes to the site be that far off wrt how these guys should be acting in this context? Like, what the hell?

Alex mentioned wanting to do one while he was in SF with Ben since they are the only GBers who played it

When are they gonna do it, I'm real interested in their opinions.
If not today, then tomorrow, since Alex is in SF right now.
