OK. I guess I was under the impression the issue was a combination of factors. Lack of proper mental health care and ease of access to firearms.

My biggest concern related to firearms and people's mental health is that they'll kill themselves, not anyone else

Although tbh I dunno if the firearm cat can even be put back into the bag in the US. Fuck's sake, even if you heavily restricted guns, the police already shoot a metric shit ton of people and they're ostensibly supposed to have far more training than even the most strict proposals suggest for private citizens

It's a diversion to move the discussion elsewhere.

They've had Congress for four years now, and how much legislation have they put forth to help the mentally ill? Oh yeah, none, because they really just want to protect white dudes' guns.

Remember when the Black Panthers started open carrying and Fox News lost their fucking mind?

When the Black Panthers openly carried weapons in the 1960s, the NRA made statements about how there was no need for people to be able to carry rifles around openly like that. Yes, you heard right, the NRA was against open carry laws.

    They weren't wrong!

Being visibly armed was the only way that Black Panthers could inform people of their rights at a time when the police would not.

Curious how now the NRA is all for open carry laws though, when it's for the benefit of white people.

People are so afraid of minorities, black folk in particular, owning guns that they will fall over themselves to insist that cops were right to shoot someone for holding a fucking cellphone or whatever.

Which, as I recall, is one of several reasons why the Black Panthers open carried.

I firmly don't support outright weapon bans unless steps are taken to demilitarize the police, and dismantle the cultural structures that make it totally okay to shoot people of color.

Anarchists and other leftists groups have been pushing responsible gun ownership and use for a while, now. And these groups are more often ignored by police in their whole "protect and serve" racket.

Equivocating the reasons why privileged folk support less restricted gun ownership vs. actual marginalized groups is actually a Bad Idea.

We had that Calvin & Hobbes strip and multiple The Far Side panels pinned up at the ranch. Sadly time and weather have destroyed them.

I'm literally surprised no one has done a series where aliens (maybe with government cooperation) massively conscript segments of over populated areas of earth to set up colonies on other planets that can support human life.

The "culling" of humans is actually one of the alien "conspiracy theories". My best friend's grandfather has been big into aliens and conspiracy theories for a very long time. He's even written a book. I interviewed him for a class in middle school and one of the more prominent theories he holds is that major conflicts are actually started on the behalf of ETs who then harvest the dead. He also thinks a super computer in Europe is hunting for him and can only find him via land line, so he has an unlisted number.

Nope. Lives on social security in low income housing. Which may be misleading, most of my home city, and where I grew up, is "low income".

His son (my best friend's youngest uncle) lives with him. He's not incapable of taking care of himself for the most part, he's just always been really deep into aliens and conspiracy theories revolving around aliens.

I really agree with this, there isnt really a clear solution at this point, not one that doesnt involve at least half a century of intense and broad cultural shift.
