If you skipped the WiiU, this is probably an interesting console.
If you were a WiiU owner, this is kind of a middle finger.
How so? Are you just talking about Zelda? I mean Splatoon 2 is a sequel, Xenoblade 2 is a sequel. I played and enjoyed earlier games in those franchises on Wii U, it's not like they announced upgraded ports. For really anything except Breath of the Wild and probably Mario Kart. More will come but that doesn't make it a middle finger any more than Skyrim Special Edition was a middle finger to PS3 owners.
If I can get some Secret of Mana online co-op action going, hells yeah.
Thanks.
Knowing this will never happen (because the ball for providing that functionality would be in SE's court), but would be possible, will haunt me forever.
i'm not sure if that's true. i think Nintendo are handling the added online support for SNES titles. least until we're told otherwise.
Why? My understanding is that publishers have been in charge of porting their games to VC since day one. I don't know why the added functionality would be on nintendos back. Nintendo would provide the means, but it wouldn't be reasonable to expect them to integrate the online component for games that they didn't develop or publish.
Ideally the functionality would be invisible to the game, and inputs would be emulated simply as another controller, so games themselves didn't really need to be modified, but we don't know how it will work at this point.
To me it seems safest to assume Nintendo will provide the tools, like they have for the VC all along, but publishers themselves have to actually implement and release their games.
I'm quite happy with what I saw, and I in no way expected Xenoblade Chronicles 2. I'm sold day one, but I foresee a toxic community for a while with Switch discussions.
I'm going to avoid Neogaf like the plague for a while.
We're getting Xenoblade 2, not Chronicles 2. Two different series.
One fantasy the other sci-fi.
I think I'd rather have Chronicles 2. Lord knows I need more giant robots in my life.
The two games were Xenoblade Chronicles (The one that took place on Bionis), and Xenoblade Chronicles X (The one that took place on Mira).
I'm a bit less excited for the Switch than I was before - still gonna pre-order it, but I don't quite like the amount of their resources they spent on bringing back the Wii (which I imagine is to blame for the controller costs). Would have liked a stronger focus on traditional games, I think the detached joycons just look really uncomfortable in any configuration.
I'm still super pumped about the possibilities of the Virtual Console on this thing, and ready to be entirely disappointed later on.
If you skipped the WiiU, this is probably an interesting console. If you were a WiiU owner, this is kind of a middle finger.
Why?
Retreads of WiiU games (Splatoon, MK8DX), no word on if our Virtual Console purchases will transfer over. I'm not buying another new Nintendo console + $110 per controller + monthly online for my kid to keep playing Spla2n. No thanks.

Seriously? I only know them as Xenoblade and Xenoblade Chronicles X. Even the reveal trailer just said Xenoblade. Am I missing something?
edit- Eh, either way I'd still rather a sequel to X. I didn't care for vanilla Xenoblade.

Chronicles wasn't part of the name of the first in Japan iirc, and we got the Japanese videos for everything is all.

This may not be a revelation for some, but I found this demo still of the Switch to be boss as fuck:
Just really sells the simplicity of the machine for me. Mind you, I still want more game options unveiled. I love Zelda, but I can wait a while if that's the extent of the first wave.

Splatoon is a sequel. Mario Kart is enhanced port with lots of new content. Not exactly sure how that is a middle finger to Wii U owners given that we're also getting tons of new games.

I'm glad they went to some effort to replicate Wii functionality, which is a good sign for Wii Virtual Console (as in, downloadable Wii games).

It's no more a middle finger than Wii U was to Wii for having a new Xenoblade and a new Mario Kart and a new Fire Emblem and a new Smash Bros. etc. There are always retreads. And it's not like these are hot on the heels of the last releases, either, they're about the expected number of years later.
I would be surprised if they were that small, but maybe?
Unless they're banking on predominantly digital game sales, they still have to consider shelf space at retail. Most places already have substantially smaller nintendo sections, making the cases for their primary console so small would just encourage even less space, I would assume.
I'm trying to get an AU price, but based on the EU prices it's $550 with Zelda. A PS4 sells for $299.
At that price the Switch is DOA.
Yeah, so $300 US should work out to $400.
Given how prices usually go here I'd be amazed if we see it for less than $450.
I need three titles to buy it and so far I'm not seeing that, so I'm happy to chill for a bit and wait for the price to come down and more titles are announced.
OK. I think I'm gonna check out and try to unwind a bit. I'll see how things look in a day or week or month or so; hopefully more reasons to look forward. Stay safe, everyone.

Nintendo frequently has the biggest section in any (Edit: Non Gamestop) store I go into, thanks to the combination of Wii U and 3DS.

Shelf space is that small because WiiU bombed. If Switch does higher numbers, it will get more space.

I think the whole point is him going to strange and new worlds outside of the Mushroom Kingdom. Including one that looks like our own.
What makes it definitive, I wonder.

Might as well get the switch version then.

Well they're just adapting to the little shelf space they'll be getting at retail.

As i said before, that's only true if you own a Wii U already, which not many people do and the Wii U also retails for $300 if you want to buy new.
