I'm curious - has trump enacted that loony plan that was on his website to get Mexico to pay for the wall that was meant to start on day 1 of his term?

He is asking Congress to approve paying for it first, then will ask Mexico to reimburse once it is complete

    So pfffffffffffhahahahahahahahahahaha

What construction company would want the job? You know they are only going to get a small percentage of what was promised and told to wait for Mexico to pay up for the rest.

You think they are actually going to get Mexico to pay for it? bwahahaha.

Here's how it's going to go.
    Congress approves (hopefully not).
Contract goes out to someone that is selected (probably with strangely close ties to Trump in some way).
Job starts, and the costs spiral completely out of control for years, if not decades, all on the taxpayers dime.
This is presented with "alternative facts" so that it doesn't look bad.

Mexico never pays for anything, but there's lots to talk about how Trump is leveraging trade deals or whatever to recoup costs even when the reality is they are doing absolutely nothing.
Maybe they slip in a few more, "oh, you can't count this debt as real debt" somewhere so that they can claim that they made back money.

In the end, it won't matter. If they ultimately go through with it, it's going to be a colossal expense that is 100% going to come out of our pocketbooks, and no one elses, and will be lining the pockets of any company involved for many years to come.
They might hire a few small no name ones for parts to throw to the wolves for cost overruns, but that's the most I'd expect to happen.

Don't forget them forcing the CBO to not actually count the costs as part of the budget....and then Trump will refuse to pay the contractors anyway

I had breakfast recently with a friend who's a former Republican member of Congress. Here's what he said:
Him: Trump is no Republican. He’s just a big fat ego.
Me: Then why didn’t you speak out against him during the campaign?
Him: You kidding? I was surrounded by Trump voters. I’d have been shot.
Me: So what now? What are your former Republican colleagues going to do?
Him (smirking): They’ll play along for a while.
    Me: A while?
Him: They’ll get as much as they want – tax cuts galore, deregulation, military buildup, slash all those poverty programs, and then get to work on Social Security and Medicare – and blame him. And he’s such a fool he’ll want to take credit for everything.
    Me: And then what?
    Him (laughing): They like Pence.
    Me: What do you mean?
Him: Pence is their guy. They all think Trump is out of his mind.
    Me: So what?
Him: So the moment Trump does something really dumb – steps over the line – violates the law in a big stupid clumsy way … and you know he will ...
    Me: They impeach him?
Him: You bet. They pull the trigger.

I think he's giving the congressional GOP too much credit.

I think they are giving america too little credit also.
I'm mildly concerned that if this happens in ~3 years, the honeymoon of "oh thank christ Trump's gone" will let Pence win the next election.
How is a lawful evil cardboard figure, with no likeable positions nor charisma at all, going to win anything? Democrats nominating Nigel Farage for 2020?

Why? I fully expect some, if not all, of the contractors to be able to be traced back to Trump or those close to him.

People will be lining up to grovel at his feet for the chance for his boondoggle of a wall to pave their companies way with gold.

If this happens in three years then they will own every decision Trump made and they supported in the mean time and it will not be kind to them. I mean look at that list. Forget whatever horrible thing Trump does that crosses the line what about that list? When they come for SS and Medicare and the other poverty programs they are going to finally discoverer how divisive and dangerous those topics are. People around here used to think that the GOP avoided doing anything about those things because they knew that while the base would love it everybody else will be out for blood but apparently they don't. Apparently they want to let him do that well I don't think America will forget who gave us Trump and who stood by him for far longer than he should.

"Listen, this wasn't an easy call. But I also believe that when there's doubt the president, the incoming president, gets the benefit of the doubt, and that's the way I've treated every president that I've had the obligation to vote for or against as a member of the United States Senate."

There's something abhorrent about that attitude that I can't put a name to.
Part of which is that somehow Trump is not a True Republican even if he toes the party line and gives them everything they want.
Maybe I'm just disgusted that this unnamed ex-Congressman believes that he's better than Trump. I guess they disapprove of crassness except when they're the direct beneficiaries of it.

I had a semi-glib comment that did not fully capture my thought(s) about whether Republicans' underestimating Trump is analogous to Germans underestimating Hitler, but I am currently unable to craft that thought into a longer, more meaningful post, and, imo, it's not worthy of the conversation for me to just drop in a random Hitler allusion without more clearly describing the similarities.

I won't join the hate train for this one. We all posted stupid shit on social media before. Its just that his posting stupid shit and entering the spotlight is new, and that's why these status are strange to everyone.

That doesn't matter, though. Like, everybody has at some point cut somebody off in traffic, but if it comes out that Spicer once cut somebody off in traffic we might as well yell "god what a fucking asshole! What kind of person cuts somebody off in traffic?" because

1, the ultimate goal here is to embarrass and discredit this administration
2, if the situation were reversed the right wouldn't hesitate and Clinton's press secretary CJ Craig would be CJ "Dippin' Dots" Craig on Fox News forever and conservatives would roll coal down the street to take selfies of themselves defiantly scarfing on Dippin' Dots just to show liberals who the real Americans are because only patriots support the ice cream of the future and Democrats' heads would be exploding over the pettiness and there would be many long-winded forum posts about how Dippin' Dots contributes only to non-intersectional feminism and so they deserve to be boycotted and none of those lefty reactions would stop CNN from asking about Dippin' Dots at every WH press briefing from now until the end of time

So we might as well stop leaving weapons on the table, no matter how small or stupid, because the ultimate goal is to embarrass and discredit this administration, and if making them look foolish also makes me look foolish I'll have all the photographs of all the lives saved when the next election goes the other way to comfort me in my foolishness.

I mean, Dippin' Dots isn't going to bring down Trump, but you can't build a wall without bricks. This is a very minor example of the sort of shit the Democrats need to be prepared to embrace. We need to a little bit unfair. A teensy bit petty. We need to withhold the benefit of the doubt from our enemies, because they will not extend it to us, and the stakes are too high to wholly prioritize purity of method over efficacy of attack.

Or somebody cut Spicer off in traffic and he kept tweeting about it for four years.

every person who doesn't like an acquired taste always seems to think everyone who likes it is faking it. it should be an official fallacy.

the "no true scotch man" fallacy.

@Astaereth not only are you completely correct, I may have also fallen for you a little.

The high road lost us all 3 branches of government for at least 2 years, 2 for 4, and 1 of them may be out of reach for a decade.

The one thing that this administration and it's supporters hate is being mocked.

We do it already amongst ourselves. Time to do it openly.

I'm surprised no one tried to popularize the nickname "Traitor Trump" when all the Russia shit was first breaking, everyone was too focused on the piss story and not the more important bullshit.

Or, like, said his hands were small that one time. And then he responded by sending pictures of them for decades

Julia Hahn, a staff writer at Breitbart News, is expected to join the White House – a move that further underscores Breitbart’s influence in the new administration.

According to two sources briefed on the move, Hahn’s title will be special assistant to the president and she is expected to primarily work under White House chief strategist Steve Bannon, himself a former key player at Breitbart. Prior to joining Trump’s campaign, Bannon, an outspoken populist and member of the president’s inner circle, was chairman of the conservative website.
