Is this a scam?

So in my desperation in seeking money, since every place I've applied to has yet to call me back, I signed up to be a mystery shopper with some place called Corporate Research Vision, which is based out of Canada.

They sent me a check for $980, of which $120 is my pay, and the rest is used for the shop (a Money Gram for $830, and a $30 charge for the money gram). My wife is against the idea, and I'm mulling this over.

Does anyone have any experience with them? Any advice (aside don't send money until the check clears)?

Scam. Simple web search using Google found this story on some local newspaper's sheriff office's blotter:
Detective Twitchell is investigating a report of check fraud. A South Thomaston woman was sent two $1,500 checks from an Internet company called Corporate Research Vision. The checks were found to be fraudulent.

every person who doesn't like an acquired taste always seems to think everyone who likes it is faking it. it should be an official fallacy.

Scam. But if the check clears = free money for you.
    It won't clear.

Heck, I heard things like this could be a scam. Let me just phone my lawyer in Nigeria and see what he says.

[edit]: he says it's perfectly legit. Sent me a fax and few emails about some other deals also. :^:

My wife works as a scheduler for a mystery shopping company, so there are some legit ones out there. If you ever have to give the company money, it's probably a scam. You should also always be wary of anything involving moneygrams or money orders.
