I've been working to close two M&A transactions 20 hours a day since May 30 and literally forgot this was releasing now. Installing it on my work laptop while waiting for other side to turn docs to me. We can dream for multiplayer campaign support in an expansion (hoping they follow their shadowrun release model here), but even without that we should be able to set up a round-robin style Solaris league. It would surprise me, if they do a 3-game release for this, if one of them isn't solaris-focused.
Hmm...something my recently-coffee'd brain noticed and just processed: there's a mechlab button on the main menu. Sure, it's greyed out right now...but holy shit! There's a mechlab button! Now, maybe this was known to everybody already...but since my SOP for a crowdfunded game is to back something and then stop paying attention to it until I can play bits of it, this is news to me and I am legit excited to see what frankenmechs I can slap together!
Also, if LRMs are this strong right now...........muahahahahahahaaa!

Yep, they turned it off for the beta, but it'll be live with the real game.
Man, I now really wish I backed this at all. Going to have to wait for the release at this point aren't I? I think I felt so burnt from MW:O that I didn't want to throw more money at an IP that had so recently let me down. Damn.

The kickstarter has instructions for backing now in order to get beta access. Harebrained Schemes is the only studio i'd kickstart any more - Jordan Weisman (a) knows BattleTech and (b) knows game development. Ever since the first shadowrun, Harebrained Schemes knows how to scope a project properly and then execute on development, so within that limited scope, you get very well-made games. Like the Shadowrun games aren't the most sprawling (heh) but they tell great stories and offer great gameplay within their confines.

Weisman is one of the few I trust. Plus he straight up designed Mechwarrior the rpg in the 80's. Helped design the original table top battletech. Worked on Mechcommander. And basically HBS knows how to do crowd funding. Part of that, they never release a campaign until they already have a plan for the game if the campaign is on the low end or fails.
But seriously there are few people that know Battletech as well as Weisman.
I'd love there to be a few more effects aside from Inspire for the pilots. Its a neat mechanic, but seems to reward you when you already have an advantage. It seems like the match quickly devolves into trading blows most of the time with not a whole lot to break it up.
Some stuff that helps you when you are missing 85% shots all the time, or hitting a mech with no torso armor in its fresh legs 5 times in a row: "Finish It" called shot at 50% damage? Maybe like a pilot skill "Revenge" for extra damage and extra heat that pops up if two of your teammates get knocked down or destroyed in a single turn?
Its weird how the opening missile shots and knockdowns seem to give all my pilots 2 wounds right off, but then you never see another head shot for the rest of the round. I wonder if there is a hidden modifier involved or I'm just imagining it.

One thing I've started noticing is that HBS Battletech seems to favor mixed arms instead of boating. That scenario you're describing about missing the 85% shots or RNG hitting legs instead of stripped torsos can be resolved already...it just requires concentrated fire from two (or more) of your mechs: LRMs feel like they're the great equalizer. Need a guaranteed hit in a particular section? Hit the target with concentrated LRM fire until it gets knocked down. You now have called shots for everybody else who gets a turn before the target stands up.
As for head shots...I had one of my Commandos from that match I described at the bottom of the last page do a called-shot alpha strike at point-blank range on the head of a knocked over Griffin. From what I could tell, there is no head destruction for easy kills...and there are limits to how many pilot injuries can be accrued per attack.
Oh, and an update on ammo crits: from what I can tell, there are no ammo explosions in the game (at least for now). It was mentioned the other day that it took two crits to set off an ammo explosion and I asked if you can get multiple crits on ammo in a single attack. Well, I kinda answered my own question and sort of verified the lack of ammo explosions with my morning match: three LRM ammo crits with one attack against a Shadow Hawk and nothing really happened other than the SHD not being able to fire its LRM anymore.

Oh head destruction is definitely a thing. I think the called shot mechanic is slightly obfuscated: seems to be a roll for called location, but if it fails then you hit random location.

Hmm...it'd be kind of nice to see the numbers for it, then. Like I said, it was point-blank (as in "I was standing over the head" point-blank) while using range-appropriate weapons.

Oddly, missing a called point-blank shot is right in line with the TT rules.
You didn't start seeing brutal headcaps until later, when the Clans showed up with Targeting Computers.
Also: This game continues to be so fucking good. I just played a 4v4 All Locusts match, and went 4-0 on the other team. :P

Curiously, the at-range after moving large laser called shot on the same mech (to the right torso) connected perfectly and critted the section out. I mean, it all worked out...but it'd be kind of nice to have info transparency when it comes to the chance-to-hit of a called shot.

I would kill for a combat log like in the Infinity Engine games to show the rolls.

It's possible they could parse this out. In the file directory for the game right now, there's a DumpBox folder that contains some subfolders for games I've played (not all of them, oddly). There's a combat log file right there in it.
However, it's currently filled with hum-dingers like this:
CombatLog.InvocationHandler [LOG] Invoking INVOCATION: ID = P1TDG.29, type = AbstractActorMovementInvocation, seed = 91198, netRouted = True, wasNetRouted = False
CombatLog.Invocations [LOG] Invoking a MOVE!
I think our Stompy Robots are magicians, for all the invoking invocations they're making...
So about this... backer beta. I know little about battletech, apart from my love for mechwarrior 2, and huge mechs in general- anyone got an overview of the different mechs I can read up on?
Love this beta so far! I need to get at least a minor amount of knowledge before the multiplayer part hits :P

HBS has a pretty great track record, yeah. I absolutely adore their shadowrun games (and backed / bought all of them asap), which, together with my very, very fond memories of Mechwarrior 2 made supporting this a no brainer

Noticed the lack of MAD and WHM and I'm sad. Also kinda sad the thug won't appear since it's not in mwo.

The beta as it stands currently on has you playing against enemy AI on a handful of maps and with a selection of match conditions for which mechs can be picked (BV and budget are in play for that). PvP combat is supposed to be patched in so they can test it for full release.
The full game is going to definitely have a campaign mode, along with the multiplayer support.
Oh fuck off PGI... You can tempt me all you want, I serve a new maste........
...wait, did you say Nova Cat? Hang on....
...
Sonuvabitch, let me get my credit card.
EDIT - although, I have to ask: why Cobra Cat of all things?
And people wonder why PGI is offering far far less, for far far more.
Yeah, unfortunately, I've made pretty well known that my two main weak points when it comes to mechs are Marauders (this includes the IICs) and the Nova Cat. Stone Rhino would be one, too...but Rhinos don't appeal to my inner "Cat Lady"

Is there much of a campaign in the HBS game, or is it all just scrims? How does team composition work?
Just scrimmages.
The beta is just scrimmages, but as someone else said the main game absolutely has a story mode/campaign. They are calling it "story mode."
I assume it'll be similar to Battletech II: The Crescent Hawk's Revenge. Which I guess was mainly just scrimmages, after all. I can't recall because I never got far into it.
