Hit 60 last night, after much hitting my head against the server I did my level 60 class quest and...was disappointed. Spoilers for Paladin below
I have been chasing after Oathkeeper and this one Paladin since the beginning. Hes manipulated myself and several other people, lied and emotionally screwed people over and even set this kid on a the path of becoming a Paladin for vengeance as a lie, all to find a Paladin with a soul bright enough to reignite Oathkeeper after he found it. He did find it (and I think we helped in Realm Reborn) and after much to do *I* re awaken Oathkeeper...then hand it over to a guy who can't get it to shine. Dude come on, give me the sword I've worked my ass off for.
I was so pissed at that quest.
What the fuck do you mean I don't get to keep the sweet glowing sword?! I have to give it to this asshole who is clearly NOT meant to have it?!
It was a bummer. Hopefully Stormblood quest is better.
Real fun when someone in the FC chat is ignoring the "no spoilers" directive and being an ass when asked to stop because it's "not technically a spoiler."
Oh is this still happening? It was happening Friday too with some people. Late HW-spoilers in chat and I kinda jokingly said "Spoilers! :P" and got a huge conversation started about how people need to get over it and hurry up and beat the MSQ.
I mean, a lot of people are probably new or returning who haven't quite caught up yet and I know of at least 2 people in the guild for which that would have been an actual spoiler. I know there's a bunch of people in the guild who aren't forumers so that's probably related? It just seemed like a weird reaction to a, I thought, polite request.
Yeah, I've only done the 3.0 HW MSQ so anything beyond that is spoilers territory. It's impossible to avoid some of them, like the Trial fights and dungeon names, but I've done a pretty good job of going in blind for actual plot details thus far. I wanted to wait to finish HW once I got SMN to 60, but then RDM came out and I fell in love so that's the new designated MSQ job. Level 57 right now with a full set of Shire gear ready to go so I should be able to get cracking on the remainder of HW this weekend.
Because we're back doing Gladiator stuff! It's pretty cool seeing Myllia again. But it really doesn't scream paladin. At least it's better than the clusterfuck that HW PLD quests were
I'm getting close to capping on poes... and only level 63. Is there anything I could/should buy with them that could help out with gearing up at 70? Or am I unable to do that until I actually am 70? (If so, what would you recommend I buy with the tomes?)
I don't think there's anything available through poetics currently that'll help at 70. I bought the two Orchestrion rolls that were previously available with Lore/Scripture to delay having to think about what to use extra poetics on.

I don't know why this is in spoilers, but yes, poetics is the "pre-SB" currency. Useful for gearing up a new 60, but beyond that you're not going to see much use for the trek to 70.
The one exception here is that poetics were also used at certain points in the anima weapon quests so it's reasonable to assume they might be used in 4.X at some point, but that's not anytime soon.
Oh yes. I want to try MCH and/or BRD now that they aren't just physical casters. But I don't want to start them without the earrings (and lol, ARC is my lowest by far at 18, so... yes please, I would like to stack earrings and ring and all the bonuses!)
I'm on the "Do these three dungeons then collect aetheric density" step of my anima, so it's very close to being done. And is still the best weapon/shield I've gotten so that's nice. Not super far into Stormblood yet though.
Can you get the aetheric density/light for doing stormblood stuff? I know it doesn't work in ARR stuff, but I'm thinking it might work in SB since it's a higher level and not a lower one? That'd be really handy but I'll find out later!

I honestly don't know. I can't see any reason why not honestly, though doing unsynced runs of HW content would probably be faster.

Would the earrings even make a difference if I'm doing my leveling via PotD and Frontlines?

Ah, yeah. Armory applies to PotD at least, but I don't know if the earrings would. Definitely works for DoL/DoH I expect, since it appears the friendship ring does?

Always remember the PLD class in Japanese is just Knight.
The problem with unloading too much damage at once is it tends to get the boss very interested in you rather than the tank. Something I'm finding out as RDM when launching Enchanted Redoublement combo + Fleche.

As a tank, it's been surprising doing older content and having SAM and RDMs in there make it actually tricky to keep aggro.
I'm digging Paladin so far. What is Holy Spirit's intended usage? Pulling stuff from long range or something? It's great in PvP, in PvE I'm not seeing the point.

Yeah. Aggro dump buttons are important, though tanks need to have a healthy buffer for aggro too.
Someone also mentioned that there's a vendor in Ishgard that sells item level 255 gear in the Jeweled Crozier, for all those new RDM and SAM alts getting leveled up.
There is. I used it to grab gear for my Warrior (since I haven't played since basically HW release). It looked like every slot had 255.
The first handful of MSQ quests give you high quality versions of the same!
I'd heard that also. I'm still making my way through the MSQ since I was way back around Alexander release for my MSQ. I just did Xelphatol and judging by the wiki I've still got 17 quests left to go before SB.
I would just like to say that, if someone else hasn't; the difference in power between the normal and HQ versions of leveling gear is virtually undetectable to all but the most adept players. And even then, you'll jump to the next ilvl vendor gear fast enough that it really won't matter. EDIT: I say this because you will be spending a good chunk of your time in synced content and out in the wild killing trivial enemies alone.
My advice: sell all the HQ quest gear. Check the markets before you start doing a bunch and see which ones are selling at higher prices, and just make bank of the people who want HQ versions for their alts before crafters get enough gear to regularly craft them.
The gil will last longer and do more for you than the bump in stats for a couple levels.
Obviously the difference in quality between normal and HQ gear at the level cap can matter massively. I'm referring only to the leveling gear.
Also, looking at the ilvl scaling from vendor gear 60-70, it seems to be about the same as 50-60 where Ironworks gear, particularly if augmented, worked more than good enough for the whole journey. Since you spent most of it soloing or doing synced dungeons, you were at worst slightly behind the curve but it rarely mattered. In that I mean, Shire gear, particularly if augmented, could easily carry you through 60-70 until you get your 70 gear, and it only costs poetics which will probably be spilling out your ears during the whole process.
So my slightly different advice: save the gil and get shire stuff, instead of vendor stuff, upgrade it, and market all the HQ quest gear. You'll be a bit underpowered sliding into 70, buy a weapon upgrade if you really feel weak and the ilvl/stats are noticeably different. At 70 afaik you get a basic AF gear set given to you, just toss that on and go.
EDIT: Actually maybe nevermind on a lot of this. :rotate: It looks like a lot of people have this same idea, market has tons of HQ fending/healing gear for less than the generic vendor prices. Maybe another class armor is worth more, dunno; but well, hell. keep it maybe? I'm sure some will pop up in GC turnins and they could be worth a ton of xp.

From a cursory glance it looks like the only way to build oath gauge in shield oath stance besides getting blocks. Not having played with the new oath gauge but that seems like it would be fairly important.
Balmung has a 6,200 player queue right now. Oh my god that's ridiculous.
I free transferred off of that server the first moment I could onto one of the others (Mateus). Best decision I could have made but nothing was really holding me there.
I'm on the "Do these three dungeons then collect aetheric density" step of my anima, so it's very close to being done. And is still the best weapon/shield I've gotten so that's nice. Not super far into Stormblood yet though.

I'm pretty sure you can't, though I haven't gotten to the first SB dungeon, I know you don't get any density from ARR dungeons. Its just been nice to run leveling queue and immediately get thrown into a HW dungeon because everyone is leveling up a Red Mage or a Samurai. Its gonna be more annoying in a little while because everyone (or a large group) will transition to SB and I'll have to specifically queue for HW stuff with no roulette bonus.
The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it. ~ Terry Pratchett
It does say "all classes" so maybe they work for DoL/H? Someone would have to test, mine are all 60.
EDIT: while they do say "level 50 and below" I'm not totally sure if the massive stat loss for 50 gear is worth the bump in speed of going 50-51. Maybe it is. Actually, yeah, probably.
EDIT2: totally unrelated; didn't A rank hunts in HW zones give allied seals before 4.0? They don't now. Weird change.
... I'm probably going to end up doing any story necessary dungeons as Scholar. Damnit.
The horrors of the only new classes being DPS.
Still not sure why they thought that was a good idea.
Or why people actually said "nah I don't think it will actually make a difference"
Like the lure of NEW CLASS! was enough to throw the balance off and have DPS/Heals/Tanks all switching spots throughout the day for the "needed class" bonus in HW. This shouldn't have a been a surprise!
Consider queuing as DPS and then hunting down aether currents while you wait. It's not like you're waiting on a daily EX roulette 6 weeks after a patch with nothing to do while you wait.

I mean, in the grand scheme of things, it probably doesn't make much of a difference. Even when HW came out, there was only like a week, maaaaybe two, where there was even a chance of seeing DPS as a role in need. (I still remember I nearly fell out of my chair when I saw it on the leveling roulette). I think they even showed some stats awhile back at one of their big shows about how players tended to go back to their "main" role after a short while after the HW classes came out. So, while in the short term, it will be more skewed that usual, I expect it'll go back to the norm fairly shortly.

Arguing about what constitutes a spoiler ought to be a bannable offense. You let something slip and someone calls you out, fine. But you get defensive and start drawing the conversation out, go directly to gaol.
Yeah, no. You're being ridiculous.
I'm certainly not the one that was defending it first and foremost, but I said my piece that the dude on the box art/in the trailers/plastered on buildings at E3 isn't exactly a spoiler.

Oh yea, I don't doubt it will work itself out eventually. Although these new DPS jobs seem to be getting a lot more praise than usual so maybe there will be fewer people returning to old classes afterwards.
Only time will tell!

I would like to get a clarification for the "light" portion of the 3.0 Anima quest. The quest text says the weapon can be equipped or in my inventory; but does that mean I will get light no matter what job I'm on, as long as I have the quest and have my staff in my armory?

Odd. No, you need to have the weapon equipped. In your inventory only applies to checking it with the glass iirc.

Having them both is an embarrassment of riches. Never been so sure of my mains.
In other news, I'm finishing the Heavensward story, on a SAM decked out in 260, and LEMME TELL YA, there is nothing quite like an overgeared SAM.
You got more prep to do than any other class, but when it does line up JUST RIGHT? I did Antitower, and on the frog boss I crit for 14 FUCKIN K.
No materia, no nothin.
Overgeared SAM's are gonna be a hoot.
That... makes a lot more sense, actually.
