Anyone here stream from their Xbox (twitch or beam)? I keep telling myself that one day I'll do it but then I remember that aside from no one being interested I don't really have a schedule conducive to streaming.

    Still...

Everything I've seen indicates doing it through the Kinect. I haven't had that thing hooked up in a long time and I would assume I could just use my headset and have no video of me on my couch. Anyone have experience or a guide I could read? I'm mostly interested in how to quickly toggle audio as necessary. Haven't really done much reading on it yet (obviously).

I did it once to test it out. No one watch, not like I care though. I don't get the streaming community thing. If someone is amazing, then yeah, I get it. However, the majority of the streamers are just people who pine of subscribers and just run around. I don't get why people watch that. Just like the G4 network, I'm too busy gaming to watch people game. To each their own.

However, the actual process for setting up Beam to stream is ridiculously simple. If you want to stream a video of you live, you have to use Kinect, but I'm fairly certain you can use the headset for voice, as there is an option for streaming chat. I may test it out tonight with a friend of mine who said he'd want to watch my game session while eating dinner. Seemed odd to me, but whatever.

While I agree that being insensitive is an issue, so is being oversensitive.

I went a bit crazy with the Spring Sale:
    • Diablo 3 Ultimate Ed. ($20)
    • Xcom 2 Digital Deluxe ($40)
    • Batman Arkham Knight Premium Ed. ($16)
    • Mirror's Edge Catalyst ($10)
    • Ryse Season Pass ($7)
    • Life is Strange Complete Series ($5)
    • Pac-Man CE 2 ($8)
7 games for about $100. It's hard for me to pass up on those deals, and now I have plenty of games to keep me occupied until Fall. And that's not even counting GwG. I've already gotten my $20 worth of playtime with Diablo 3. My friend and I have been going on gaming binges. I stupidly stayed until until 4am on Saturday, as he's on the West Coast and we had a solid gaming session going.

Yeah, I'm not even sure WHAT I'd stream. The thought reentered my head playing crawl. It might be funny to watch as we all flail and throw stuff at each other. However I think the games if want to stream are more like duelyst on my PC.

Only other thing is so I have game film so I can assess why I'm improving/not improving in certain games (gears for example). Not a great usage of time but I doubt I'll go through with all of this anyway.

In general I tend to watch streams of live events (tournaments) or to try and learn things. To bring up duelyst again, it is a turn based "card" game. So I can play and watch pretty easily. However due to the strategic component I can pick up things and stand on the shoulders of giants.

Comparatively for something like gears I watch partially for the spectacle, partially for strategy. I think gears is fun to watch. I don't really have any idea what the purpose of my twitch/beam channel would be as it relates to these ideas and that's part of what is holding me back. I don't like the idea of diving in and just winging it. I want to go in with a purpose.

The only games I would consider streaming are things like Titanfall where the action is crazy and if you're good, it's pretty sweet to show some of it off. Another game that I think could be good for it would be something like Diablo, where it's mass chaos and some of the combos/builds that are put together are beyond absurd.

Even then, I would probably only stream if someone asked me to so they could watch. The idea that people who don't even know me would want to watch me play a game is very, very foreign and weird to me.

You don't need to use Kinect, unless a) you want video of yourself, and/or b) you want multiple people to be heard (apparently multiple headsets is insufficient; same deal on PS4).

I like to stream now and then, though it's been a while since I last did so. I've been waiting until I got a Kinect/PS4 cam so I could do multiplayer with my wife.

Some streams I've done have been Mega Man stuff for The Mega Man Network, and it's just fun. I particularly like interacting with the chat, but Xbox killing Snap makes that harder to do with Twitch. I haven't tried Beam yet.

I only saw beam mentioned off hand somewhere (here?) To the effect of "well why not just use twitch?". I'll probably research both just for the sake of it but I have the same thought. Why go for the unknown one when even if you don't care that much about taking in the tens of dollars from streaming you could theoretically have an audience on the bigger platform?

  • LBD_NytetraynLBD_Nytetrayn TorontoRegistered User regular
If I understand right, at this moment Beam is easier, but Twitch has the user base, though Beam being native to Xbox One now may help it.

I stream from the Bone to Twitch. You don't need a Kinect if you don't want video. Headset audio works fine. You won't get money for streaming on either platform. The Twitch app utilized Snap so you could see your chat on the screen but now that is not a thing so you'd need a second device (phone, laptop, what have you) near you to read that.

I wouldn't be in it for the money, just kinda for the hell of it so that sounds reasonable. Bas d on what little I've read the entire process sounds simple so I'm not sure what beam is doing differently.

Is deactivating the stream automatic? I would assume even if I have whatever they call the "not-on" power mode deactivated the stream? Aka if I don't do a full power off and unplug the bone and simply power off from a controller that's it?

Beam allows more customization for where you want things displayed as an overlay on the screen while your gaming, whereas apparently Twitch needs to be snapped. It's kind of a middle finger to Twitch from MS, from what I can tell. Someone who actually uses Twitch can answer that part better.

With Beam, if you want to end the stream, just hit the guide, go to the beam segment on the guide, then turn off streaming. Simple as that. It takes more time to turn streaming on with options than it does to end the current stream. Even then, starting the stream is easy as pie.

There is no way that Beam is going to dominate over Twitch, but it seems like their goal is to give non-serious, casual streamers an option to share with friends and maybe groups. It ties in directly with your gamer tag and doesn't require totally different credentials or 3rd-party app to setup. It's built into the console's OS and right there on your guide, kind of saying "hey man, I'm here if you feel like it."

Given that Microsoft usually bakes in some other basic functionality--media players, virtual drives, remote desktops, and most obviously other streaming programs like WMC--them including Beam into the Xbox One's OS isn't that surprising.

To be honest, I didn't even know what Beam was until the intro video for the last OS update. I never gave a shit about streaming for the most part. Now that it's readily available, I admit that I'm mildly interested enough to mention to someone that if they want me to, I can stream my game for them. Other than that, I still don't care. Glad it's an option, though.

That's kinda how I feel. I am not sure which platform I'd choose as I haven't looked at functionality is present in one or the other. Gonna have to read up a bit, but the fact that it's there and if I felt like it I could hop on stream a bit then be done is tempting.

I played way too much of that game. There's a sad lack nowadays of "I've only got 20 minutes, what can I do..." titles like that one. Everything wants to be this all-encompassing "last game you'll ever play" or something.

It's a double-edged sword. Ninja Gaiden is still considered a fucking awesome game--its remake was literally the best action game on the Playstation 3 for the first few years, but that's the strange situation of having a hugely successful title, then making a point of giving a large middle finger to the man behind it after his departure, Itagaki, who was a major supporter of the original Xbox.

Ninja Gaiden, I'd argue, is remembered well not for nostalgia, as it has barely anything to do with the classic Nintendo titles, but on its merit. It certainly held up on PS3, and when I lent it to a friend to play on his Xbox 360 last year, he was surprised how sharp it still looked and played. The same for those handful of other games, particularly those that were new IPs: they weren't follow ups to the sacred cows of 1990s gaming, they were just good games--they had to be, considering how much the internet fucking hated on the original Xbox to the point the XB1 has been treated rather kindly. I don't think it's much exaggeration to say a 10/10 game on Playstation 2 would've been a 7/10 or 8/10 on Xbox simply by virtue of how much people bashed it, and how strong the common narrative was that it would never survive.

It means the console had a rough time (though it did manage to somehow edge out the Gamecube in numbers sold), but it also means those strong titles are actually very good games. There's nothing wrong with nostalgia--but it is resultant of past titles being great games, not necessarily those in the present. And it's probably the single greatest guarantor of a game not being forgotten by time, in an age where a dozen yearly franchises compete for wallets.

A lot of games I remember from the original Xbox unfortunately are licensed ones and weren't well received regardless. Such as alien vs predator: extinction, or that magic the gathering battlegrounds game. I would like to play them again but I'd need to rewire a bunch of stuff after digging out the old box. There are several others that I've hung onto as I had no real incentive to part with them.

I'm the same--due to backwards compatibility, with the exception of playing KOFXIII, I almost never use my Xbox 360 unless I have some abrupt craving to play Ninja Gaiden Black for example (my PS3 is functionally the same, serving as a PS2). Then again, I also have a Dreamcast plugged into my 4K TV, so maybe I'm just holding onto the past too long.

I very much would like to see the original Fuzion Frenzy return. It was the raver version of American Gladiators and was incredible. The backward compatible version on the 360 was terribly slowed down to the point of it not being fun at all, and Fuzion Frenzy 2 sucked. We played the crap out of the original in college, turning it into the ultimate and most even/fair drinking game of all time. If you want the rules, I'd be happy to share.

Most backwards compat titles with online like CoD are either A)full of cheaters and hackers and b)desolate and unplayable (usually because of cheaters). I was so happy to find L4D2 untouched by this, and have been hopping into versus lately. It's been a ton of fun even with randoms sometimes trolling. It's unfortunate nobody plays the DLC, I really want VS No Mercy.

Alas I did encounter a cheater today. Was winning on Swamp Fever going into the finale, but we all died before we got into the house. One guy on the enemy team snagged the grenade launcher and brought it to the door that leads to the boat escape. Using the launcher, he blasted himself through the door and instantly won the game.

how is L4D/L4D2? my friends and i loved monday night combat, but holy shit it was awful trying to play it on xbox one.

i haven't looked at the backwards compatible list in a while. examining it now there isn't a huge hell of a lot that i want to go back and play on there. a lot of that is on me because i tend to almost never replay things (replayability for me is multiplayer). although i need to tell my wife raskulls is available. is shadowrun populated at all? is there anyway to even see how many people are playing a given game?

9/10 games of L4D2 go well/are fun. I mostly play single player stuff on BC because like I said, most online games are dead or teeming with griefers. Even Halo Reach has griefers in Grifball. And because developers and Microsoft have largely moved on, there's no point in reporting them or hoping for things to get patched.

It's why there's no real celebration to be had that Black Ops 1 and 2 are BC, because unless you really like campaign or zombies it's unplayable. Some games hold up better than others. I doubt Shadowrun is even online anymore, but if I recall right it was left unbalanced by devs early on.

And then there's all the EA, Activision and Ubisoft games that have the servers shut down. RIP Skate 3.

L4D & L4D2 were some of my favorite MP games. I spent days upon days upon days worth of gameplay in those. Even years after they came out, I found myself returning to them, because they just kicked all sorts of ass. The VS matches were amazingly fun, especially when you get a good team to play with. It's one of the few games were I consider having a mic to be a requirement. If I knew people were still playing VS, I'd jump back into it in a heartbeat. Normal campaigns are still a ton of fun, though. If you missed those games, you're missing out on something amazing. Totally give those a shot.

    Cool.

how is L4D/L4D2? my friends and i loved monday night combat, but holy shit it was awful trying to play it on xbox one.

i haven't looked at the backwards compatible list in a while. examining it now there isn't a huge hell of a lot that i want to go back and play on there. a lot of that is on me because i tend to almost never replay things (replayability for me is multiplayer). although i need to tell my wife raskulls is available. is shadowrun populated at all? is there anyway to even see how many people are playing a given game?
L4D & L4D2 were some of my favorite MP games. I spent days upon days upon days worth of gameplay in those. Even years after they came out, I found myself returning to them, because they just kicked all sorts of ass. The VS matches were amazingly fun, especially when you get a good team to play with. It's one of the few games were I consider having a mic to be a requirement. If I knew people were still playing VS, I'd jump back into it in a heartbeat. Normal campaigns are still a ton of fun, though. If you missed those games, you're missing out on something amazing. Totally give those a shot.

i meant on BC :P we played the shit out of L4D2 but the experience with MNC has me leery of other BC titles

RIP Skate 3.

i'd mostly be playing with people i know online IRL so as long as it is actually playable (which i MNC borders on not being) should be fine. shadowrun didn't have singleplayer if i remember correctly so i guess there is the option for lan play? it'd be weird if there is no online play

Shit... I misread that. My bad, man.

While I agree that being insensitive is an issue, so is being oversensitive.

The framerate is absolutely more stable and there's usually atleast 30 servers going at any given time. I think this is why games like L4D2 and BF3 last, because they have a server list, with tools to kick toxic players, stable connections, etc.

I stream. Twitch is kind of dumb now that you can't snap it because you'd load game, snap twitch and hit broadcast. Now you have to fully launch twitch then hit broadcast and it should snap like the old times.

I'd try Beam but I actually do get some viewers... they made it very convenient. Maybe I'll stream some Enter the Gungeon tonight on Beam as a test and see the quality.

As far as audio/video, I use the kinect for video and it can do voice but it sounds poor. I use a headset that has a mic. Works well. Twitch will allow you to boost or lower your mic volume as needed. Game volume will control how loud the audience hears it as well so if it's overpowering your voice (Gungeon does that real bad), you can nerf the game sound.
