Looking for a decent fireproof, waterproof safe.
I'm currently searching for a personal safe in which to store sensitive personal documents (Passport, birth certificate, etc) for safety. I'm trying to find a reasonable safe that would be fireproof and waterproof in case of disasters, as well as something to hamper any potential burglars.
The issues I keep finding when researching safes is that every one I look at has
some deal breaking defect listed pretty high up when I read the online reviews. Most of the complaints are:
- Electronic locks on some safes, which cannot be operated in the event that the batteries die (some have key override, not sure how good that can be). Or else have external batteries which compromise safe integrity.
- Moisture and humidity buildup. A surprisingly large number of safe reviews indicate that even in dry environments and with desiccants like silica gel, moisture on the interior of the safe can build up, and damage the contents.
- Lock mechanism failures. Startlingly frequent.
- General craftsmanship issues, including easy-to-pry doors.
I'm sure some of these complaints are just people who were unfortunate enough to win the defective item lottery, but still, combing through reviews is making my head spin and I feel I'm short on resources for this search. I'm hoping anyone has any advice about how to select an appropriate safe for personal use. I'm hoping for something that's reasonably fireproof and waterproof, and something that could be mounted to prevent anyone absconding with it.
Thanks!
