I think I found where some of the grind complaints come from... I've been putting in quite a bit of time, and nearing the end of the the 4th area (out of 5). But i'm level..... 31. The endgame seems to be at level 50, you get roughly 900xp for any Nemesis interaction, and it's like 20k per level. If this path keeps, and I finish the next zone at 35ish, and then close to 40 from the finale..... Gaining 10 levels through the nemesis system seems exhausting.
This feels like it might be a YMMV thing. I only just got to Seregost (the 2nd region for me), and I'm level 25.
Also, I will say tat I really like that there are plenty of Skill Points to be gained outside of leveling up. It's nice to feel like I'm getting more powerful even if the bar isn't full yet.
Also my first Spoils of War legendary orc is truly terrible. Vulnerable to Executions (Which means you can 2 shot him), and instantly killed by beasts.
I'm pretty sure you can insta-kill him from the Opened Characters screen and auto-collect your legendary loot.
Alternately, make him your bodyguard and then summon him right after you blunder into a pack of sleeping caragors.
That's the 4th (or 5th) zone. The act I zones count for 5.
I'm not worried about skillpoints , but enemy captain damage. I fought a 44 at 31 and I got 2 shot. There is some fierce level scaling
Yeah the lvl scaling can be brutal. I'm 30 and many of the orcs I'm fighting are not messing about.
Any one tried social conquest yet?

Man, my Nemesis from SoM was an absolute cast-iron son of a bitch. Ol' Zugor the Mangler showed up in the Arena segment of Act I as the final champion at level 19 to my 11. He could down me in a single flurry of rapid attacks, and was arrow-proof. He killed me many times before I managed to beat him by cheesing the AI in that segment.
Then he showed up again during the attack on the Gate. Thank God Baranor was there to save me from Zugor's pitiless axes.
Currently Playing:
The Division, Warframe (XB1)
GT: Tanith 6227
For me the Nemesis system is the least interesting thing about the game. There's so many captains I sure as hell can't remember if one ever shows up twice. It's pretty wasted in my opinion.
Just got this, literally the first orc captain i've met has become my favourite orc already.
Poor Naka, got utterly destroyed by me even though he's immune to fire, ranged, poison and freeze attacks, so I killed him with a sword in the gut.
He came back, now as Naka the Survivor. So I killed him again.
Naka came back a 3rd time only this time he had a plan: he was going to ambush ,e during a fight I was having with 2 other captains. Only now Naka's head is encased entirely in metal. and hes screaming about how he can't die. So I kill him once more.
He tries to ambush me a 4th time. Again unsuccessfully.
Then while on my way to get some ithilen I spot him again. I sneak attack him (which dazes him) and then stab him many times before finally cutting off his head.
5 fights with Naka and ive only played about an hour and a half.
Kinda sad he's dead now. if I had could've I would've dominated him and made him a warchief, I grew fond of him and our encounters
Imagine these games without the nemesis system, and how fucking dull they would be.
I don't really see the difference between the Nemesis system and 50 orc designs that spawn at random. The nemesis system is cool but the base game is absolutely fun as balls.

Yeah having your nemesis spawn in the arena was a son of a bitch, I had to run around the outskirts to do stealth attacks over and over on mine
Also another thing more games need to copy from this is random guys fleeing. Like imagine in skyrim if bandits would feel from you if you killed on of their guys, or turned up in powerful armour, etc.

The Nemesis system still absolutely needs to be added to a super hero game.
yeah we really need an open world super hero game like 10 years ago
Like... infamous?
I'm thinking more city of heroes style

I got the ability to summon a drake at will, so combined with the skill that makes your drake take much less damage, it's basically GG Mordor. Just had a crazy amount of fun in something that was outside of the scope of missions are overall story, was fighting in a fortress and decided I was done there, called my drake and shadowmounted, spurred him out into the snowy wilds and saw a guy who ambushed me on a previous follower mission on his caragor just roaming about with his posse. Shot him off his caragor from way up there and then used the lunging grab ability drakes have to pick up his caragor, carry it away, and eat it. Sailed in a fairly smooth circle (glad you can't crash into mountains cause I would have) and spit down some fireballs on approach then hit the breath, torching the remaining little fellas and enraging the captain. I was going to come around for another run but a fucking boulder just sideswiped me as I was coming out of breath, knocking me off and letting me fall like a mile down. The fighting made a graug come out of his cave, and I guess he was pissed that the neighborhood kids were playing war on his lawn cause he didn't like it. Fought with him a bit, yada yada, a captain I had melted earlier came back and gave his "Oh, so you melted me and cut my arms off but GUESS WHAT!" thing. I call my bodyguard in at this point, then dominate the graug. The first captain has called in more caragor, and I dominate all of them. Long story, well, kind of long, but shortened a bit, I ended up riding on my original drake being followed by my bodyguard who has mounted a caragor, a graug, and then another small pack of dominated caragor after all of this, just running from fortress to fortress killing everything, knocking down all the bait, and then dominating all the monsters that came to get it. by the time I was done there were undiscovered captains showing up as well as prior victims of the rampage all either made crazy by it and showing that in the nemesis system, or just being terrified on sight.
oh, and my bodyguard is a deranged captain who became convinced he was actually a former warlord of mine who had died earlier. he has just taken on his personality (very unconvincingly, as they do).
City of heroes style plus nemesis system would be great. I miss COH.
i think the devs tried to do something like that with City of Villains or Champions Online. not as robust as the Nemesis system, but a set up where you'd have a nemesis that would pop up now and again for you to thwart. more fixed than what Monolith have done but its certainly something that has been given thought.
One criticism they at least worked towards improving from the first game is really neat in this one, which is incorporating the nemesis system more into the main quests. It's not exactly intrinsic but there's some neat missions that take advantage of it like (spoiler for the end of carnan wuestline)
having a bunch of guys you killed come back as zombie captains, etc
Also the exact moment I think of putting the difficulty up to nemesis after strolling into a fortress with all spies, the boss, which is ten levels below me, curse kills me instantly and has a no chance trait. It was infuriating but also awesome
as a gear slot. Am I going to start finding those as loot? That would be weird kinda.
I they describe it as "runes" so I think it's like him imbuing it with "new magic"
Also is act 2 the only act? I've done a tonne of story missions and there's no act 3 so far, I'm guessing if there is it's like a few final missions that's it, can't imagine it being as big as act 2

You're not finding actual rings as loot, just runes. Not that it matters from a functional standpoint, but that's what they're meant to be in-game.
I have no idea about Acts or even what story quests specifically push the main quest forward. Just kind of going with the flow, I guess. I imagine act 2 is the middle, though, and probably the longest and most open-ended part.

there's the prologue, act 1, act 2(which i'm still on), and them maybe the late game and post game account for the other acts? there's no 'Complete Act 2' achievement, but there is a secret achievement for conquering that region., which i guess would signal the end of Act 2.

Ah...been so long since I played a game with Arkham style gameplay that I forgot all about the pain of directing your attack in one direction only for it to veer off a bit and hit the one person who could break my combo.

Good god, Nemesis difficulty is the opposite of fucking around.
I've died so much in this arena. Fuck you, Gorgum the Everwounded. Stay dead this time, you mummy sonuvabitch.

Yeah. Nemesis can get really chaotic really quick.
And some of these traits are ridic.
Immune to Execution
Immune to Ranged
Vulnerable to Beasts
Really good at killing beasts
Oh yeah, and he could regenerate health. And defy death.
Spent like an hour on that fight before I figured out that the usual Mordor hit and run tactic was never going to work and got busy striking, ducking, weaving, and combat draining mooks. Killing Gorgum was immensely satisfying when it finally happened.
I've noticed that captains that have a mask or something covering their mouths have a muffled effect added to their speech, such a good touch
Also in terms of building up specials my preferred build is to just build up might slower with the "get might when you're hit too" skill, as opposed to having it where you build it faster but can lose it if you drop your combo. It's just way too easy to get interrupted for me and that makes it impossible to double your might meter for brutal executions which i love
I can see valid approaches for both tho

I know someone was asking about overcharging might before
It's easily possible, but you definitely have to be using the wrath upgrade that increases wrath gain on attacks but causes you to lose all of it upon leaving combat or getting hit
I wonder if Gruk the Machine will stay dead. He started as Gruk the Tarkslayer, when he managed to get a lucky shot on me and kill me after I was out of Last Chances, which promoted him from random orc to named orc, and the name because, well, he slayed me. I decide to hunt him down and kill him (cleaving him in half). He comes back sometime later in the first area, getting the nickname the Machine. I defeat him again but just stab him. The third time I run into him coming back from the second area, he literally cam out of a bush to attack me. That fight ended with me cutting his hand and one of his legs off. Fast forward an hour later, motherfucker attacks me again, we fight for awhile, and then I cleave him in twain again.
I'm running to the area later to start the last mission in the first area, and motherfucker is in the middle of the camp and calls me out again. Rotted chest flesh with ribs sticking out, prosthetic leg and arm, taunting me. He threw goddamn bombs at me after I elven rage charged him and started beating the shit out of him. At the end, I cut his head off.
I don't expect even that to kill him, though
considering I can't go back to the first area right now, I don't think it matters.
It's really frustrating having to juggle my inventory to get the upgrade conditions right per fight. Wish they just needed to be in your inventory to count.
Goddamnit, if you ever need to kill a lot of captains, just try focussing on dominating them, I swear I've done like 5 in a row who've managed to get themselves killed before I dominate them
I found that if you quit the game and reload in the middle of the map you will respawn at the various "Ubisoft Towers" even if you've not activated them.
Just a warning for everyone about the fight pits, the levels mean jack squat, so far pretty regularly my guys will lose to someone up to like 10 levels lower than them, even without any obvious rock paper scissor type weaknesses. Watch out for stuff that enrages opponents in it, that seems to turn them into instant winners
I think I'm close to the end, and I really hope I'm not, because if so they showed way too much of this game's story, and I also spoiled myself on it by watching all of their previews.

I think a Star Wars game would be rad. Like, you're a Sith fighting other Sith for dominance.

There isn't too many drawbacks to dying other than orcs getting stronger, so I don't mind it too much.
