Well this one more so than previous ones because of mantling and the new activities. I like that about this one. It's funny mantling and sliding aren't like super huge new movement stuff, but combat plays really differently now with it. At least on amara I'm constantly going in and out of melee range and sliding and annihilating enemies.

I played a mission that felt kind of like a new arena mission except it took pace over a city block and I was constantly under attack, and it was god damn rollicking fun time.

I love the enemy variety you get tossed at you at least so far. Combat just feels fun.

Didn't pick this up, lots of other gaming going on and D2 Shadowfall in a couple weeks. I did check out the subreddit and youtube and I've seen a few spoilers, this included that really dampened any enthusiasm for picking this up in a year or so on the cheap.
It's ok, Ava's shit child sidekick will get her killed in 4 hopefully for getting best siren killed. Also, the villains are evil streamers? Really?

I can't decide whether or not I like every planet having a cameo from previous games because it makes it that much more unlikely that they could be included as future DLC characters.

I basically want a Smash Bros Ultimate for Borderlands where absolutely everyone is there.

I've seen a few videos where people are using slides into enemies to knock them back and in some cases into the air before shooting them. Honestly, doesn't just look cool but also rather fun. Not to mention, this gives some squishy builds options for dealing with mobs that get into their face. Not sure if it works on bosses, but still knocking enemies down with a slide already looks like it's more effective than dealing a weak melee strike to an enemy that gets into your face and sticking to there.

I just have to say, yeah I was anticipating this game, of course I'm a huge fan of Borderlands 1 & 2 (the PreSequel being a misstep IMO and Tales being not my kind of game) but after a solid whole day of playing, B3 has totally exceeded my expectations, I just love it. This is the peak Borderlands experience and it fits me like a custom glove.

Did two boss battles while two levels below the boss. Early game, so as a percentage the difference was big. Not fun. Do the early side quests. It’s real easy to just keep on with doing the main story, there isn’t as much of a hard break when completing those quests as in the previous games.

Gigabrain was miserable. I had a shock weapon, so I got through his shields well enough, but his health bar took forever. I ran out of three ammo types before I was done. Commander Whatshisame on Maya’s planet is the current pain. I’m 12, he’s 14, al the loot that’s dropping is 13, and I’m not even cracking his shields. It’s definitely side quest time.

For those with performance/optimization concerns; late last night I got hit with a patch request (these are things that apparently stream in to your game), accepted and then went back in to find performance much better in some areas that had earlier been problematic.

So it does appear that they are working on optimization aggressively.

I'm level 23 right now and the best unique I have gotten is probably still the one I earned at level 4, the Binary Mocking Cutsman, a level 12 gun. It dropped from a level 12 bandit technical that was rolling around. SMG, 20 round mag, consumes two rounds per shot. The two bullets go off at ~20 degree angles from one another, fire energy connecting them, forming an expanding horizontal line. As long as both projectiles don't hit a wall, it continues - allowing you to do goofy shit line hit people fully obscured around corners.

Its damage is what's really impressive, though. The beam would melt pretty much everything instantly. Around the level I could equip it, bosses died in literal SECONDS thanks to its 19% chance to inflict a 119 fire damage proc. Even at my current level, I STILL pull it out for bosses, because it remains the highest damage over time weapon I have against beefy targets. It's goofy.

This is stressing me out. I was already pretty confused about what made one gun better than another, whether it was the level or score or the rarity or just straight up what the damage number is. Or sometimes all the numbers seem good but in practice the projectile type sucks. Is there a stat somewhere that just compares sort of your aggregate DPS like Diablo?

Yeah I bought a CoV pistol that is huge in size and looks like an SMG from the vendor. It was level 4, and purple quality. I'm level 12 now and that level 4 gun is unfortunately still the most satisfying weapon I have in my arsenal. It had fire elemental damage on it, it shot fast and with decent accuracy. And all the other guns I've found just aren't as much fun as that one. Sadly, due to that gun being only level 4, I eventually had to make the switch to a much more boring gun, just to get my damage numbers up.

On the topic of game performance, I played for about 4 straight hours in a 3man party last night on a PS4 Original launch day unit. Lots of jankiness. Some of it is probably processor power and video processing and RAM, but others I can squarely just place as a fault of the game.

Some technical issues, annoyances, problems, and issues I ran into last night:
-- Lilith's pathing AI during the very first mission of the game was horrendous. How did that make it past QA? She would walk, stop, pivot in place, pause run, and it was exceedingly janky. It looked like she was keyboard turning. And not at all natural. Had similar issues with Vaughn but not nearly as pronounced, but definitely still noticeable.
-- Lilith actually broke, and stood in place, and we could not finish her escort. We were 10 minutes into the game and had to abandon our game lobby to restart to fix Lilith.
-- Menu lag is awful. Just trying to load the map to pan around and look at something takes far too long. Additionally, every time you change zones, it takes forever to load the talent tree page. I dunno why that page is so inefficient, but it takes sometimes as much as 30 seconds for that page to load.
-- Comparing items and stats is not nearly as easy or good as it was in previous games. The stat comparison doesn't always pop up. Very noticeable in stores, where you actually have to like exit the store to look at your weapon to see how it compares to the weapon in the store.
-- One of my buddies was playing as Flak and good lord those pets are annoying. They get right in my way like all the time, block my shots, obscure my vision, and generally are very party-unfriendly.
-- Without any spoilers, we got to the zero-gravity part on the ship, and in our multiplayer lobby, my friends' characters did not have a floating animation. They were literally using their default run/walk animation in Z-axis space. It looked sooooo bad. To go along with this same point, my Flak buddy's pets were not floating during the zero-gravity part, which was a stark contrast to everybody else floating.
-- Can't skip the opening cutscene. I've already seen it twice. Once when I started my solo game, once when I started my multiplayer character. They *really* need to add a way to skip that. How did such a simple thing slip through their QA?

We had a lot of fun with it, but man. Just based on my first 4 hours of party gameplay, this game needed another month or more in QA just to stamp out some of the bugs and technical issues.

I'd recommend just trying out guns and taking not of what you guns feel good to use. Some stuff really comes down to how you play and that can very over characters. A gun can be legendary and have a high score, but end up feeling crappier than a rare with a lower score because the way the gun is optimized just doesn't mesh with how you play, while the blue ends up being almost a perfect fit.

iron bear has some bad hitching getting in and out of it. similar to full-screen scopes. (also iron bear kind of sucks)

Based on what? I’m only like 13 so far but iron bear has definitely been my “now you’re all in big trouble” button. It’s also a great get out of jail free card. My only complaint is that it’s really short when you’re actively engaged.

So boss spoilers inside, but there's a boss you end up fighting late 20s (I was 28 at the time) that is...awful. The design is great, the abilities it does are cool! It's a cool boss.

The fight took me 23 minutes and I was never in any danger at all. An enemy should not have a million hit points when my guns are hitting for 30.

Iron Bear has been awesome to me so far, I’ve upgraded it a bunch (duration, fuel efficiency, kills remove seconds from cooldown and armor) and gotten homing missile pods and Auto Bear (That makes Iron Bear stay with you for a while after it runs out)

    I’m level 15.

Got another Legendary from Promethea boss, Maggie pistol.

I somehow ended up with 85 golden keys over two days, so have been getting lots of goodies (including legendaries) out of the box.

Are you on PC, Dac? Can we have a pic?

I'm at work right now but I can put up something when I get home. Might even make a small clip to show it.

It honestly felt broken at the time I could equip it, lol. But it was an orange, so you'd hope so.

Thoughts: I started out Amara because I like punching things, but I switched to Zane about four hours in. Looking forward to the skill that let's you consume grenades to dramatically enhance the decoy, somewhat bummed that it's capped at 3 grenades consumed. I enjoy popping the sentinel and decoy and just being like "you guys take care of this."

I have an orange amp shield currently that increases damage by 120%, drains shield by half, and heals for damage done. I whipped out a Jakobs pistol and had a hilarious few levels where I was one-shotting heavies with it. Shield is starting to fall far enough behind in raw numbers compared to other shields at my level, though (415 vs. 700-900) that I might have to swap it out soon.

I am irritated that multi-player is put under the Social tab instead of the play menu. This is the kind of thing where I think they really, REALLY don't want BL to be multiplayer, because this is the kind of thing - treating MP as a sideshow instead of a primary way of playing the game - that was present in Pre-Sequel.

Speaking of PS, I appreciate that there is a zone in this game that is an homage to that game. Despite its faults, I enjoyed the FUCK out of its more floaty combat.

This steep loss of frame rate when zoomed-in is a real problem because it fights against what the game is trying to make the player do.
