Downloaded this while I wait for the xbone version to come out. I played a really long time ago, I believe before they had started doing any of the leagues, aside from the hardcore/standard ones, but didn't remember what I was trying with any of the characters I had.
Decided to roll a ranger and man, is shrapnel arrow fun once you get the multi-shot support gem. The game feels really fresh after all the time i've spent on D3.
I don't want to dissuade you from playing a certain class, far from it. Just know that Evasion as a defense is in a pretty bad spot right now. You're likely to have a hard time if you use a lot of evasion as your primary defense, you may want to look into incorporating the passive that converts all of your evasion into armor.
It's not that evasion can't be done successfully, it's just harder for new players.
Thanks for the heads up. I don't know that i'll stick around long enough to really run into those later game issues but it doesn't hurt to be thinking about. Maybe I'll run up a marauder or witch then and see if it sticks with me. I did pick up a fun sounding lighting orb gem that casts lightening whenever you cast lightening near it.

Evasion works as a layered defense. You don't want to depend on it as your only defense. I'm not good enough to figure out this stuff so I just stack life or ES.

Oh, yeah.
It does work. Energy Shield is more akin to your health than a defense, in fact many builds literally forego having more than one total HP and instead focus it all on Energy Shield.

I just crafted a 5-socket staff with +80% spell damage, added lightning damage to spells, and like 30% global crit mod. Some other decent bonuses too, though one useless one I think (bonus melee damage, which I don't bother with). I can use it in two levels, and it'll probably hold me over for another 20 or so.

Good league for me, this. I might not go as deep into the next one but I'm pleased with my MoM Inquis Storm Call build and I look forward to trying out a different kind of build in the new meta.

Cool. That's how I'd been assuming it worked, but armor doesn't apply to your shields in warframe so I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask.
So are acts 1 and 2 just really easy, or is this firestorm build just super good even when you're barely starting to put it together?

I'm about halfway through merciless and it's not slowing down for me. My biggest complaint is I can't find packs dense enough to challenge my DPS. I haven't done any maps yet though, so I'm sure it'll happen.
Is it too early to talk about league starter builds? We usually have to wait for the big patch notes, but I haven't been paying attention and don't know if there is going to be some major changes right before it starts.

I made a scorching ray MoM trickster on the Beta that was very strong with the changes to the supports, assuming they don't nerf things a bunch, it should be a good starter.
Sunder with zerker or slayer should still be really good as well, and there is always ancestral warchief. I'm guessing they will nerf bezerker, it's nearly as powerful with VP as some of the crazy CI builds were, and you can more easily get 6-7k life now.
Basically try to think which builds might do well with everything having about 3 times more hp (in maps anyway) than they do now, and you'd be on the right track. Builds that relied on instantly blowing shit up in the past didn't do very well on the Beta for me.

I haven't been following the changes much, though I do intend to jump back in when the expansion hits. Are they changing the overall pace of the game, as this comment seems to imply? Longer times to kill and all that? Sounds interesting, if so.

Most of the new act bosses are longer encounters than the original ones, and pretty much everything in maps has about 3 times more HP than it does currently. With some effort you can get pretty decent clearspeed up to about tier 6-8 maps but after that things slowed down a lot for me. I only mapped on two characters, a low-life srs/animate weapon character and a MoM Scorching Ray trickster.
Leveling isn't terribly slow, though the highest zone available in the Beta did feel a bit slower than Merc dried lake ever did. I used hidden potential to level a second Scorching Ray character and I was able to rip through stuff pretty quick.
The HP increases are an indirect nerf to flasks and charges, both of which also received some direct nerfs, so many builds that relied on high uptime of these powerful buffs will probably be less effective overall. I expect most players will skip bosses in maps once they've killed them, but I could be wrong there. I easily got overwhelmed in Breaches on my srs character in yellow maps past t8, I didn't have enough damage to clear the waves of enemies coming at me so I would either have to portal out or die.
It seemed like everything in maps did a fair bit less damage but I never got confirmation if that was actually the case or not.
I think the changes they are making are interesting, but I wonder how hard it will be to safely do red maps.

Sounds like fun changes to me. I'm not a huge fan of the blow up the entire screen instantly meta.
I want to do a Sunder build but I'm lazy and don't want to make a tree myself. Does anyone have a tree + links? I'm torn between going Slayer or Berzerker. Or maybe a juggernaut EQ lab farmer instead?
I used to play hardcore only, but I get maybe 2-3 hours of gaming time a night now, so losing a character is absolutely devastating to me. So I switched to softcore because it allows me to try new encounters without feeling like I might lose multiple weeks of progress.

If you want to transfer stuff from your remove-only tabs now that you're in standard or hardcore, consider getting a program that allows you to set scroll up or down on your mouse wheel as a left-click.
This let's you buy tons of orbs if you want to exchange some of your Alterations for Jeweller's etc., and allows you to move things from a tab to your inventory or vice versa by just rolling while moving the mouse. Faster and less irritating than clicking like a maniac.
Just don't scroll too fast or you get booted for making too many actions per second.

I hate the feeling of losing progress
But
Without that risk in play I find ARPGs kind of stale and tedious
So I'm a hardcore player because it creates an artificial level of challenge that the game otherwise lacks

I play hardcore because I got into PoE watching streams of it, and everyone plays hardcore there, so I got used to all of the build & playing advice being centred around the assumption you were on hardcore. Plus, the economy's different and I prefer that.
I've played a bunch of hardcore in this game, but my friends play softcore, so I've pivoted to playing softcore and doing my best to treat it like hardcore.

Biggest reason I put down the game for a bit until the new league starts.
That was the joke I've seen so far in those "patch notes".
- You can now be found in Fall of Oriath
- You can no longer exist
Sounds about right.
