It appears it is I who lost track of time. Yeah, 1.5 years isn't long. Certainly feels ages ago though.

Just got back into playing it regularly again. Hoping the last update is eastern front maps/weapons/skins at least

We'll just have to wait for what's coming in June, but from the image on that update page, there's a possibility for North Africa. But one thing that kinda nixes most hopes for Eastern Front is from DICE themselves responding to a tweet on how there won't be any new Tides of War chapters after Chapter 6.

It seems like their intention was to do a live service of WW2 in order(ish) of events.

Invasion of Norway, Fall of France, Africa
    Then Greece
    Pacific theater

They probably intended an Eastern Front content drop, followed by maybe others but capping off in Berlin probably.

I'm kinda sad they failed. I have my gripes about the accuracy of the game, but I loved the idea of reminding people WW2 was not just Normandy, Stalingrad and Berlin. People used to say WW2 was done to death, but there are entire front that I have never seen in games. I loved that Norway, France and Greece got shout outs!

So, the fact that people want yet another Normandy, Stalingrad and Berlin game bothers me. But I also get it. That's the public perception, and fighting it is really had.

I think LevelCap nailed the expectation on the head: people watched Band of Brothers, Saving Private Ryan, Enemy at the Gates, and all the other shows/movies/books about the US invasion of Fortress Europe and of the Eastern Front, so they wanted to have epic matches with those settings as the backdrop. The only thing they had to hold them over was the expectation that the GaaS model would eventually get those theaters added in the game. Now, though...

EDIT - note that I'm not disagreeing with your assessment that it's nice to see the other theaters brought to the forefront. I absolutely loved the snow maps and everything about the Grecian maps (except for the whole fighting...dammit reds, I just wanna stroll through the vineyards!)

This is probably reaaaally nit-picky, but besides me not being in the mood for a shooter at the time, one of the first MP footage reels I saw featured one of the V1 bombs exploding in the middle of an outdoor area, with a lot of trees around it.

The huge explosion came and the trees.... They just remained static. It just felt so cheap to me, you have this huge explosion which doesn't really do anything to the environment, when back in BC2, tanks that fired their main cannon had a back-pressure effect that affected shrubbery/trees around them.

It just made me feel like the game was a cheap cash grab and no longer a passion project like BF3 felt like.

I remember there being a rumor a while ago that there were two battlefield games in development, BC3 and BFV. BC3 got delayed, and BFV got pushed out the door early.

I think they could of done a mix of maps between forgotten and classic at launch. Being more clear with their plans for the Service part would of helped. Or, just chose a time period dirring the war and stick with it. Real odd seeing Tigers in Norway in 1940. Trying to cover all of WW2 with the same assets feels odd.

I’m very conflicted on BF V and now a 6 being announced. I‘Ve loved BF from 2142 and titan assault through BC2 and on. BF 4 was just awesome for me. I loved it, loved all the unlocks, ribbons, challenges, and the. There’s the story and tags hidden through the DLCs. It just seemed as you mastered one part of BF 4 there was another layer to dive in. That all culminated for me with the phantom dog tags. I loved BF1 with the real destructive environments and towns, but it felt like the layers of challenge disappeared in an effort to work in micro transactions and the inexplicable difficulty in getting ribbons and medals to work although the later DLCs seemed to straighten some things out, others never really made an appearance and the new modes didn’t grab me, mostly due to my personal limits on time I’m able to sit through matches. The guns also lacked a lot of the customization although part of that really was attributed to some of the realism of the time. I also really am waffly on the elite classes. Ultimately I think I’d do without.

Then BF V rolls out and there really was a lot to like. Brought the beauty and levels of BF 1 but somehow, inexplicably they broke almost all of the other things that keep me playing. Like ALL of it. Ribbons, medals, unlocks, outfits, tags. They took lessons from Starwars Battlefront apparently in how to completely ignore the things that kept people playing and spent time and effort on things I could not care less about. Particularly the battle royal mode. Holy crap I did not effing care. I want to like BF. I really like the more strategic layer of playing versus the DM modes of call of duty. Maybe call of duty has implemented similar modes I can gravitate to, but last I checked there weren’t any that were similar. I just don’t know what to think about studios worried more about MTX than about putting things in to keep you playing and fun. I thought tides of war challenges would be it at first, but it got old pretty quickly. I really feel like they lost their way. I want to want BF 6, but it’s squarely on the wait and probably not list after having splurged for ultimate packs in the past. There was much there to build on and they did t seem able to work on any of those things the players wanted.

I hope they can turn it around but I just don’t see it. I want to want it again. There’s nothing quite like it out there that I’ve found.

With BFV and Anthem's 'live services' completely shitting the bed, I'm not sure I'm even interest in BF6.

Hell, the last BF I loved was 4. And that's ages ago, now.

To be fair, I never saw FO76 and NMS making a come back.

FO76 is currently undergoing their comeback with the Steam release coinciding with them adding in a story doled out with quest NPCs.

NMS made a comeback last year with their Beyond update.

    I wouldn't say FO76 is making a comeback..

last BF game I really loved was 4. 1 just didn't click with me. I think 5 is better than 1, for me, but that isn't saying a whole lot.

Going from being reviled to a "Mostly Positive" rating on Steam counts as a 'comeback' in my book.

As for the last Battlefield game I really loved, I gotta give it up to Hardline. Liked it better than 4...but since nobody is playing Hardline, BF4 ain't bad for a consolation Battlefield game. If I had to rank them, my personal list would be: Hardline > BF4 > > BF3 > > BF1 > > > > > BF5

Do I want to play BF 2042 now that I have the rig for it? Absolutely. Do I want to pay 70 buckers for a multiplayer-only game that also forces me to get entangled in EA's bullshit?

    Maybe.

I'm sure singleplayer has it's players, but I can not imagine the majority of the people picking up a Battlefield for that. I feel like the first Battlefield that even had one was BF4 (which wasn't great - looked good on PS4 at launch though).

. . .personally I would have liked a Bad Company announcement, maybe do it like COD does taking turns with releases, however I am fine with a Battlefield that gets back to what makes the games fun. The WW2 one was just. . .yeah. If we can get back to BF3 (or even BF2) in quality. . .heaven.

It's funny that you mention Bad Company in the paragraph after saying that BF4 had the first real single-player story mode. :P

That said, BF3 had a story mode too (which wasn't god awful, mind you) but BF4's campaign let you unlock a couple of guns for multiplayer that really helped out the classes those guns were for (P90 for engineer, M249 for support).

BF1's reveal trailer was excellent and had me sold near instantly. BF5's reveal trailer was terrible and put me off the game entirely. This one is somewhere in the middle - it just doesn't really do a lot for me.

What I'm most worried about is the mention of season passes and battle passes. If I'm paying full AAA price for a game, I can do without the F2P 'engagement' mechanics, thanks.

I probably shouldn't have talked about what I never played: I MAYBE spent ten minutes in BF4 campaign and was like "What am I doing here. . ." I'm not surprised Bad Company had a campaign since it was a spinoff and seemed to have an identity in mind.

. . .I honestly don't know why BC is in the doghouse, especially after several experiments from DICE. A return to objective (not hold the point) based gameplay would be amazing (Return to Caste Wolfenstein remaining my all time favorite of the genre). The point to point combat was just so good. Honestly I'm probably transporting most of my fond memories of Battlefield mainline from gaming in Bad Company.

I've come to accept that most of these AAA-productions are co-opting severe political/social issues as a way to engage players while furiously denying their connection as a way to have their cake and eat it with the crowd of brainlets who believe these kinds of aesthetics can exist in a vacuum. They'll deny it because they're all so terrified of their financial prospects if their playerbase catches on to a whiff of "politics", which says a lot about both the player population and the money men behind these productions.

It is what it is, unfortunately, since we live in an era where a counter-culture against critical thought is actively flourishing and feels validated

This isn't even a recent decision on DICE's part that could have been motivated by the political climate. It's been canon that the Battlefield Universe encounters a climate disaster/refugee crisis in the form of an oncoming Ice Age that renders most of the planet uninhabitable. That's literally the premise of 2142, a game which came out 15 years ago. While those were political issues at the time, they weren't as prominent as they've become within the past 15 years. With a title like 2042, this is obviously some sort of prequel to the 2142 story. So a climate/refugee crisis is kind of a given. DICE's hands are tied and they can't remove those topics if they wanted to without a huge retcon.

My concern with the game is that I couldn't stop cringing during that trailer. I'm honestly surprised that the soldiers didn't all line up and start doing that flossing dance. What the hell was that pile of garbage that they greenlit? I think it might have been worse than the chaotic hot mess that was the BFV trailer.
    • chaotic mess of soldiers. Seriously every frame is stuffed with as many soldiers that they can fit on screen at one time. They're just standing around in big blobs and not using any kind of tactics. Just a series of mosh pits where they're shooting each other.
    • Continuing to mosh pit fight while a rocketship is launching 50 meters away from you.
    • Centering the view on some soldier going out of his way to steal the dogtags. Sure it happens in the game, but a real soldier isn't going to bother wasting time with that so don't highlight it in the damn trailer.
    • I think that the little bird BTFOing the two KA-50's in that way was stupid. I can't take the game seriously if they don't even try to be serious in the damn cinemetics. They might have been KA-52s. I didn't look close enough and I'm not watching that again.
    • Another random mosh pit of soldiers standing around shooting each other for no reason on the top of a random skyscraper put aside their differences when the little bird says hello
    • The mosh pit kinda scatters despite the fact that they all have rifles that would be extremely effective against a little bird at that range.
    • They fling an ATV into the little bird... Again, they're not even trying to take themselves seriously
    • The fighter pilot ejects, has a anti-tank missile for some reason, shoots the chasing plane, and lands back in his jet. No. Just NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
    • Wingsuit out of a TORNADO!!!!!! Why not just make it a sharknnado full of Megalodons at this point? That would be completely in-tone with the rest of that vomit.

I'm honestly surprised that the wingsuit guy didn't dab in mid-air as he flew past the camera in the final shot. It feels like my nightmares that modern DICE would revisit 2142 and piss on its grave are coming to fruition.

Also the the swarm of assorted special editions is a always a red flag.

    Edit:
Also, the US / Russian pair off is odd. An EU vs China would be more logical since China will play a big role in the ultimate creation of the PAC, which was one of the major-powers in 2142. It makes me think DICE is trying to get in bed with the CCP and is terrified of casting china in a negative light whatsoever.

It all sounds very Battlefield to me. Things like the guy ejecting, shooting an rpg and then landing back in the jet were things players actually recorded themselves doing all the way back in bf3.

I was only surprised the 4 wheeler didn't have c4 on it when it hit the helicopter.

The trailer was more honest in how people actually play these games. It's not a sim and people by and large don't play it that way.
