I got a Hyper 212 and I have screwed it in place on my Mobo and CPU.

Where do I aim the fan sticking to the heatsink tower? Away from the back fan and towards the front so the 212's fan is above my RAM stacks right? I don't want to turn the PC on before I make sure I won't be overheating things in there.

That looks like it should be good. The back fan is pulling hot air out of the case. You want the heatsink exhaust going in the direction of the back fan so it can get pulled out of the case and replaced with cooler air from the front/top/wherever the intake is.

You want all your case fans oriented to pull air from in the front and push it out the back.

That fan marked 'be quiet' is on the back of the case, so I should move the 212's fan to the other side?

Edit: No wait, the fan is pulling air INTO and through the heatsink, so the fan should be facing the front of my case, right?

The fan is oriented correctly. Make sure the arrow on the fan that indicates airflow is pointing through the heatsink, toward the back of the case.

So is it still a bad time to be building a new PC given the whole cryptocurrency thing? Or have prices gone down on that front?

If a 1070 Ti is actually released that could possibly lower the price of the 1070

it's a great time to build a PC

From what I can see we'll find out around Halloween about the gtx 1070ti

But won't that leach sales from the 1080?

Than in another 6 months Volta comes out. There's always something right around the corner.

While true, it's also miners driving up prices a little still. That isn't always the case, but then you can't exactly predict when that'll happen either.

Just glad I got my 1060 when I did.

anyone here heard of/have bought from a company called Savant PCs (https://www.savantpcs.com/)?

they've got some neat PSU shrouds for a bunch of cases that don't have an "official" shroud, but i can't find much of anything about this company.

It's not about that there's always something new coming, it's that prices are inflated because crypto miners are still buying up all the stock.

I was looking at 1060's this week, and the ones I could buy were all sitting above MSRP, this is Canadian dollars, but a 1060 6GB I know for a fact was $330 6 months ago is currently selling for $392, and that's a "sale" price.....

Prices are also inflated because of ram costs right now. Probably part of the motivation for the 1070ti (which is basically a 1080 with gddr5 instead of gddr5x).

Status on 1080: First round of reply from the ASUS tech inquiry thing is a bunch of 'try this and see if it POSTs', which won't do any good to try because it's been making it past POST even when it's unstable enough to not make it to the login screen.

Status on backup GPU: ended up Amazon Primeing a 1050 ti, both so I can do vidyagames while trying to get the 1080 sorted out and so I can test and figure out if whoops the problem has been my motherboard this whole time.

It is adorably tiny, it barely goes past the PCIe slot, and it doesn't need its own connector to the PSU!

It was that somehow, from within the derelict-horror, they had learned a way to see inside an ugly, broken thing... And take away its pain.

My friend sent me this and I am not really tech savvy, would any of you gents know what the issue might be with his computer not starting up?

Does that look like a PSU issue?

huge demand for flash memory for SSD's/phones meaning more manufacturing time goes to flash storage instead of Flash RAM

Also, there used to be a lot more memory manufacturers but they've been merging or gobbled up till we're left with only 3 I think. So there's no real incentive to open new fab when the lead time for a new facility is something like 2 years and you're making bank right now.

So, someone please correct me if I’m wrong, but the price competitor for the Ryzen 1600 looks to be the i5-8400. By the looks of things, the i5 will be stronger at single-core but the Ryzen will be better at multi-core. So with games and apps utilizing more and more cores, is the 1600 the way to go for a budget build?

I get that this a sim but it’s gotta be close, right?

    http://www.cpu-monkey.com/en/compare_cpu-intel_core_i5_8400-766-vs-amd_ryzen_5_1600-758

  • LD50LD50 Registered User regular
The Ryzen is quite a bit cheaper so it might make more sense to compare it to the Ryzen 1600x, which has a higher clock rate.

IMO you should always buy parts for the games you want to play in a couple years. A lot more games are making heavy use of threading for various tasks that were previously folded into a single thread. All the big name engines (Unity, Unreal, etc) have full support for as many threads as you care to make.

Multithreaded performance is going to be more and more important as time goes on and games continue to advance.

So I need a storage upgrade badly. I'm running <1tb total internal and it's been rough managing what gets installed and culling data and stuff.

I've currently got a Samsung 750evo 240gb SSD as my system drive (and also where my twitchiest multiplayer things install) and an old seagate barracuda 500gb 7200rpm hdd

I want to spend <$100 (the less-er the better) while significantly improving my usable storage. Please to be suggesting solutions, build thread! thank you.

@Meerkat see if your friend can borrow a known good PSU to swap in. Otherwise, it could be (unlikely) the stock HSF starting to die.

I couldn't hear anything so I'm assuming the video was showing that the system would shut itself down after a short period of time.

Holy shit there was a lot of dust in my case's front filter.

I had noticed it building up on the outside, but when I popped the front off today dust was flying everywhere.

I only cleaned it maybe a month ago!

    God damn carpet!

I have the case raised about 8cm off the floor on and vacuum often but I still end up getting a lot of dust on the front

I keep my PC on top of my desk. Compared to when I had it on the floor, I'm getting far less dust buildup on the filters.

I don't want to sacrifice valuable desk space for my tower, so it's dust filters and well designed airflow for me. On the plus side, that works surprisingly well. I opened up my case with the intention of dusting it out. I hadn't done anything in awhile outside of cleaning the external filters, and it was so clean on the inside I didn't have anything to do.

  • XeddicusXeddicus Registered User regular
Dusty filters are just doing their job! Are you overheating? No? Carry on!

....I should probably check my filters....

Doesn't mean you should leave the dust on the filter, though.

I'm just annoyed that the dust seemed to build up so fast.

Ideally I'd like to have it on my desk but there really isn't any room for it.
