Edit: I'm also going to be living a Nintendo commercial as I travel to Orlando for Star Wars Celebration tommorrow.
You know, I feel like I've seen a lot of people say this sort of thing. "I took it on a plane just like in the commercial" etc.
With so many people living out the commercial in different ways, maybe their outlandish/laughable use cases weren't so crazy after all?
Every single comment I've seen is related to playing on an airplane.. which isn't outlandish at all. It was the fucking rooftop party where you're waving your friend over from her window 250m away that was laughable. Or just.. you know.. partying on a rooftop.
In other news, I'm totally buying Mario Kart immediately, but the trailer for it is completely ridiculous. The narration sounds like it was recorded in an Uber on the way to the studio.
Knowing Nintendo they're gonna need that 250m line of sight to communicate during online play. Maybe brush up on smoke signaling while they're at it.
1. I've just hit 40, I've had some RSI issues at work (I'm a programmer), my wrists aren't what they were and it turns out I'm having real trouble holding the Switch in a comfortable manner. Strangely, the GamePad was not a problem at all. It had that ridge to angle it up so I could rest it on my lap and play for long periods. The Switch involves a choice between comfort OR a good viewing angle whilst being able to use the analogue sticks effectively.
2. However! I just got the Hori stand for the Switch and it's excellent. 3 different angles, folds up nicely and is really stable. That plus a Pro Controller and the Switch has realised the promise of portable console gaming
Last night I set the tablet on my chest (propped up in the official case) with the joycons loose and it was GLORIOUS to play Has Been Heroes. Zelda was fine but there were certain button combinations that weren't as comfortable. This game feels made for this control method.
On a related note: 10 hours later, I legit feel bad for the devs behind HBH. It got wrecked in early reviews and I have to wonder if they just didn't understand the game. It's complicated as hell to play WELL but once you do... you feel like a genius. I've got 3 of the pirates down now and some of the spells/item combinations are a blast to play with. Nearly every single fight has an "oh shit" moment where I'm scrambling to set up a defensive maneuver or JUST having a timer reset on time to avoid getting my head caved in.

I mean I watched the Treehouse footage of Has Been Heroes and it did not look like something I was remotely interested in.
It's fine to not be interested in a game, or not like a type of game. It surprises me a bit to see a Mario Kart bundle that doesn't include a second set of Joycons or some steering wheels.
Well at least it supports 2 players right out of the box.
Are we sure about that? I mean, it seems insane it wouldn't because it doesn't need that many buttons but Nintendo continues to surprise.
Looking forward to it either way, as I have a pro controller so I definitely have 2 ready to go.

This marks the third full day since I had to part with my joycon. I am concerned about Link; I haven't heard from him. When last we spoke he had some very promising leads and I'd hoped to be with him again to continue our explorations. I have to be strong for him.
The techno-wizards who agreed to conduct diviniations on my joycon acknowledged that the joycon existed, but they've provided no further updates on their progress to drive out the demons of faulty connection. Supposedly this ritual can take up to 18 days. I'm not sure I can bear it.
The Nintendo gods promised to carry my joycon back to me on overnight angels' wings, but I've begun to suspect the techno-wizards may have decided to keep my joycon for themselves. Perhaps they are envious of the power it grants me. Perhaps they wish to come between me and Link.

Splatoon 2 is listed on Amazon as August apparently? So we got big hitters Mario Kart end of this month, but is that it until then? ARMS comes out sometime before that right? The drought seems real.

Mine had a similar fate, and suddenly, when all hope was lost I had both the fixed and shipped notices pop op back to back.
I'd say the Switch has a pretty decent first year lineup. When I think of software droughts, I think of the PS2. The launch was a little weak, and if you weren't a gearhead (Gran Turismo), there was nothing notable until the first DMC almost a year later (then the floodgates opened with GTA3, MGS2, and FFX).
Sure, if you could nitpick and say multi-plats don't count, but I think BOTW, Arms, MK8, Splatoon 2, Disgaea 5, and Mario Odyssey (plus the various indies) is a nice selection for the first 9-10 months.
and don't forget there are a ton of people (myself included) who may "move around" while playing a game. I rarely sit still with a controller for a long period of time, motion controls makes that impossible if every time I fidget and adjust my arms I

That's tremendously more than the Switch and has some real gems like SSX and Timesplitters.
And yeah I'm focusing mostly on stuff that's only on Switch. The multiplats mostly don't interest me. Puyo Puyo Tetris doing a weird streaming restriction has made me reluctant to get it despite being way interested thanks to Giantbomb streaming the import a while back.
For me, who got it primarily due to Zelda being awesome, Mario Kart is a draw but ARMS and Splatoon 2 don't interest me. Didn't enjoy the Splatoon testfire enough to think I'd play more of that and I have zero interest in ARMS. So maybe just me, but that's a lot of time before anything else I'm interested in happens. Which is kind of a bummer!

That would suck. Drought aside, Splatoon feels like such a Summer game.

That list has loads of sports/shovelware. Even if I give you SSX and Timeplitters (though I think they were more notable for setting things up for their superior sequels), that's still what, 3 good big games in the first 10 months, once you count Gran Turismo?

Armored Core 2, Dead or Alive 2, Dynasty Warriors 2 (okay i'll give you that one), a Madden game, Midnight Club, Moto GP I hear good things about, Ridge Racer V was a big one, Smuggler's Run was really cool at the time, Summoner wasn't terrible, Unreal Tournament? Sports games aren't shovelware even though I don't like or play them myself. It had a bunch of racing and fighting games that may not be your cup of tea, but also a bunch of other stuff. I'm not even counting Gran Turismo, there were still plenty of good solid titles at launch not even counting the first year. The PS2 is not a good comparison here. This is a significantly more varied selection of titles and that's just launch. I don't know if any of those titles count as shovelware as we normally understand it. I think I even played a bunch of Evergrace back in the day.
I like Zelda and Mario Kart 8 seems great but I don't think this comparison works at all, especially if you look at exclusives.
I like my Switch despite Nintendo making weird decisions with it, but I don't think it has a very strong game lineup right now, despite Zelda being amazing.
I was hoping the Direct would have more games but it doesn't sound like it will, so hopefully we'll see more Odyssey at E3 and more game announcements to go with.

Lists are going to be different for everyone. None of those games you listed interested me at all. So you may think it's a strong lineup but for me it's nothing. This is why list wars never end well.
Maybe it's just my tastes coloring my memory. I just remember eyeing the PS2 section for nearly a year before seeing anything that looked interesting to me. It also just seems like people are disagreeing on the definition of said drought. When people talk about the drought of Switch software, it seems like they're focusing on the gaps between high profile titles, and ignoring all the smaller releases in between. But when I bring up the gaps between high profile titles on the PS2, now it's suddenly worth mentioning Orphen and Ready 2 Rumble Boxing.
Well as I mentioned, stuff like Madden might be a big title but not a personally interesting one. The Switch doesn't have a fantastic lineup even if you discount personal taste. A bunch of ports and older games which are nice but not particularly interesting. The new stuff is dropping very sparingly. That's all I'm trying to say, not start a list fight. The PS2 had an objectively larger and more varied lineup at launch than the Switch.
ARMS is spring/summer I think? Splatoon not hitting until August means people looking forward to the big new stuff have quite a while to wait between games, and then another 3-4 months until Mario. Hopefully E3 brings a bunch of announcements but even then that's not stuff coming this year most likely.
More power to you if you're enjoying the little things or the older games, but that's not the discussion I was attempting to have. I don't care if it interests you or me personally. I was talking about the general health of the system's bigger unique releases.

It's fine to not be interested in a game, or not like a type of game.
