Merry information evaluation day and a happy source criticism to all.

This is a thread for sharing and talking about the various actual fake news stories that every site feels compelled to make one of on this day.

Round-up of Google's several different pranks

http://www.royalalberthall.com/about-the-hall/news/2017/april/140-stars-to-celebrate-twitters-greatest-moments-at-the-royal-albert-hall/

https://www.reddit.com/r/place/ - a kind of game/social experiment where each user can, with a 10 minute cooldown, place different coloured pixels on the same grid. Already it's a mix of dick jokes and weird cults because Reddit. R/denmark made a flag of red and white pixels that is now being slowly attacked by Swedish redditors armed with yellow and blue pixels - history repeats itself, first time as tragedy, second as farce, and 12th time as dumb internet bullshit.

Apart from links, personal anecdotes of real life pranks are also more than welcome!

Ms. Pac-Man on google maps is a blast and should probably just be a feature at this point.

I tried playing it in my neighbourhood but the fact that there are so few straight streets and right angles here makes it a lot harder. Seems better for cities on grid systems.

Netflix has a 45 minute special of Will Arnett narrating things like a guy sharpening pencils, someone microwaving a burrito, grass growing, etc.

There are some really funny parts to it. You can tell he's having fun with it.

    Are personal anecdotes welcome?

I work in a psychologist practice. My coworker came out of her first session this morning to see a ton of congratulation messages from friends and family on Facebook and SMS.

Her boyfriend waited until she left for work (It's Saturday here so he wasn't working, but we were), broke into her Facebook account and posted a sonogram with some sort of announcement message.

She was livid and simultaneously impressed.

Apparently he had been sitting on this idea for 3 years because they hadn't been in town together for April Fool's since he thought it up.

Yes, including real life stories is a good idea, I have added a note to the OP.

I always prefer the ones that are obvious jokes from the start. Not really a fan of the ones trying to actually fool you.

I absolutely hate fake pregnancy announcements for April Fools. There's nothing particularly clever about them, and they're punishing to people who are having difficulty conceiving or who lost a child.

My best friend has been on a cruise this weekend should be back today. My last message to her was about all (well, some of) the stuff I did with the girl I started dating a month ago.

If bff asks for an update today I'm considering telling her we eloped last week. Reasons against this joke: BFF would believe it at least for a minute, and her boyfriend's lack of a proposal has been a touchy subject (so I probably won't).

Jobindex A/S recruiting on behalf of the US Embassy

The greatest job, just the best, really
I promised that I would find a fantastic new Ambassador to Denmark. US has the best job, and it is really quite amazing just how great this Ambassador job is. America first, you know, but Denmark can be second, whereever it is.

Denmark is not even a country
It’s fake, Denmark. You cannot have a country with only 5 million people. I’ve talked to people and they all think what I said. It’s a tiny little place and they even claim to have the best beer in the world. That’s crooked. America has the best beer ever brewed. It’s tremendous.

    Not the smartest people
Also, Denmark claims to have had the happiest people. They’re smart. Much smarter than the other Europeans, but let’s be honest. Denmark made a dumb deal, they sold us the Virgin Islands. That’s really stupid. Ask anyone, Denmark has lots of appeal, but they’re absolutely stupid. Dumb. Really stupid. I’m smart.

Make America in Denmark great again
The US Ambassador will be an American. I need someone who can say “Donald, I’m going to treat the Americans well. I’m going to take care of Americans, do the best for Americans in Denmark. They are treated horribly by the Danish - the people, not the pastry.” We’re only just beginning and we’re getting major things done but I need you to:
    • Teach the uneducated Danes about crowd sizes
    • Promote good The Apprentice rerun ratings well beyond Europe’s borders, but not as far as Mexico
    • Unite Denmark and the US in the epic battle against Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin
    • Figure out what the hell is going on

I need the best man for the job
I really need a very, very, very amazing man, a great, great developer who:
    • Has a view on women that predates four score and seven years
    • Can tell me what happened in Sweden last night
    • Has a great take on nasty people and no time for political correctness
    • Can find Denmark on a map
    • Has really big hands

    Yes or no?
You’ll be working at the best embassy in Denmark, really. It’s the best. It’s got a great big wall. And I need a brilliant man for this job, because I can’t bring this job back to America. I know you are out there, I know our best negotiators, I know the overrated guys, the underrated guys, the guys that nobody ever heard of that are great. One of the best men in the world, by the way. Make no mistake – at all, this is what other people wish they had done, but they haven’t, because I have. And I need that man in Denmark.

Apply no later than today April 1st at imyourmandonald@jobindex.dk.

Don’t forget to include a check for my re-election campaign along with your letter of application and resume. The one who sends the biggest check gets the job. It’s going to happen. It’s going to be huge.

The danish flag seems to have been retaken, but right now the huge swedish flag in the upper part is growing east and looks like it's going to eat a stars and stripes on its way

Let's share and discuss [April Fool's] stories from around the web!

I dunno, I've always thought we should instead ignore them and stop rewarding the practice so that this stupid "tradition" will die out already. Maybe that makes me a stick in the mud, I don't know or particularly care. Pretty much all April Fool jokes fall into 3 categories

-49.5% basically amount to "Isn't it funny to give a person a panic attack?". Well... no. No it's fucking not. It kind of just makes you an asshole.
-49.5% are getting somebody's hopes up and making them excited about something, then punching them down and laughing at their misery. Again, just makes you an asshole.
-The 1% that are actually cool, like Google maps going Pac-Man? Are just good jokes in general and not actually beholden to April Fool's. Meaning they could do them in the middle of November and it would still be good.

Seriously, we need to make "olol i lied" day not a thing anymore.

I would argue that some of the fake announcements are so obviously silly as to be unbelievable.

I mean, Google Gnome from this year for instance.

Even if you don't enjoy the silliness and jokes for their own sake I think one nice thing about April Fool's is that it makes slightly more people evaluate information critically.

Too bad they then entirely forget how to do it the rest of the year.
