Just pulled off my second Squad victory, and this time it was a really solid win. I was so excited I forgot the chicken dinner screen shot.

It was a great game though. We controlled our drop zone, got geared and did a great job holding down key terrain while keeping ahead of the circle. The final guy gave up his position taking out one of my team mates, he didn't last long after that.

It was starting to feel like I would never win another squad game.

Vehicle kills is pretty broken with the ambient game lag. Like they will have driven you over far before the vehicle reaches you, defending yourself is pretty futile.

Okay, I had a fantastic solo experience this evening I need to tell.

It starts with me parachuting into the mechanic's shop near the flooded city (the plane was flying almost directly north to south through the middle of the map) and I see a guy land there at the same time as I do and we are running to the car in the garage. I made it to the car first and accidentally exited it while spammed F, as did he and there was another guy who runs into the house near by.

I manage to get seated in the car, the guy (who was wearing a Where's Wally shirt is still standing at the car so I can't run him over when the guy comes out of the house with a pistol.

I yell at Wally to jump in the car, he does, I floor it and we zoom off while pistol fire hits the back of the car. We agree not to shoot at each other (his English is fine, so we can talk, Aussie players often get shunted to the Asia servers) and make a run for the Georgopol docks to do some shopping. I drop him off at the first warehouse and drive up to the next one on the off chance he's thinking about offing me after all.

Get a level three police vest, lvl2 helmet and a scar with lots of ammo when a jeep pulls up at the entrance. I gun down it's inhabitant and loot some more ammo then turn around and go looking for Wally to tell him the guy had a whole bunch of armour when I see a guy scurry up one of the control towers. I don't think it's Wally but I'm not sure if he's got a new shirt so I hold off shooting, but then he turns around, sees me, opens fire, and I manage to kill him first after taking cover behind a container and then shooting him as he comes around.

I didn't catch Wally's in game name, but hope that it isn't him.

Just as I loot the guy's body I see another guy come up between the ladder and I shoot a couple of times before spotting the shirt and realising it's Wally!

I apologise and luckily he didn't return fire when I started shooting (he saw me pick up a duster so he must have guessed it was me still) and thankfully most of the bullets hit the stairs rather than him.

Now kitted out, we run over to the jeep whose occupant I looted earlier, he cleans him out then we hop in the jeep and drive off as the blue circle constricts for the first time. As we're zipping down the road we run into a Dacia, Wally hangs out the window and opens fire as I ram the back of the car, then maintain a straight line so that Wally can shoot it's driver. The car veers over and crashes into the side of the stone bridge and we each hop out, I need some painkillers from the shots I took earlier which he doesn't have, but Wally does! And drops them for me.

Another foe vanquished, we return to the jeep and zip down the road, heading for the school when I see a guy in a red shirt near one of the little shacks. Wally has seen him too and I loop right around the shack and pull up at the back. I shoot the glass out of one of the windows and it's inhabitant runs outside to shoot at me rather than eat a grenade and lands a couple of shots but isn't expecting Wally, who pops out around the back of the jeep and shoots him dead. I heal once more, we loot him for ammo and then go off for more adventures. We drive past the school as the blue has almost finished constricting and drive up a hill to where two buildings are located. The doors are open, so my plan is to just wait in the jeep looking over our shoulder as a red zone has just started up in front of us.

As we're idling I hear a shotgun go off to our right (we're parked in between the two to hide us better) so I jump out of the car and run around the car and take out the guy. Wally fortunately is unhurt and covers while I run up to loot the shotgunner. While I'm picking through his attachments Wally opens up and kills another guy who ran up the hill. Wall goes to loot him while I cover, then runs back and tells me there are more painkillers in his pack and heads for the jeep. I'm about to stand up to run over and grab them when a third guy shows up, presumably chasing Wally and not expecting another player to be there in a solo game. I gun him down, both Wally and I are cracking up laughing at this point at the non-stop stream of bad guys that keep cropping up. I can hear some other people in the same room as him that are also laughing when his voice comes in so we have an audience of some sort watching these unexpected hijinks.

The red zone has stopped, so we peel out in our jeep again giggling like a pair of idiots (one of the guys on the hill had a gas can, so we are refueled and good to go again) and approaching the center of the circle roughly near the military tunnels when I see a supply crate in the distance coming down. I ask Wally if he wants to go for it and he agrees, so we head over and arrive just as it lands. There is a buggy parked close by, so I ram it with the jeep and do a lap to look for the driver but don't see anything. I tell Wally I'll park the jeep so that it covers him as he loots it, pull up and he hops out to loot it. I jump out to cover him and get clipped by the buggy driver from a rock nearby, crippling me.

I shout out "Wally nooooo!" and the sniper runs up to finish the job and headshots me just as Wally pops around the corner of the jeep and I see him kill the sniper.

Wally and the other people in the room realise I've gone down and also shout out "noooo" while laughing.

It cut off my voice before I could ask him what his Steam name was so I could friend him.

It turns out love can bloom on the battlefield.

Don't get out of a car right next to a building. You'll get stuck between the car and the wall, making your character float in the air. You'll eventually get unstuck and hit the ground and the game will think you've been falling for 15 seconds and deals according fall damage.

My technique is to keep my headphones off while in the lobby/plane. Because one can only be called so many racial/homophobic slurs and hear "China #1" so many times.

That said, if you ever come across someone in the lobby crawling on their belly and whispering "snnnnaaaaakkkkkeee" while in the lobby island that is me and I am drunk.

I doubt you'll have much success, but even a temporary cease-fire is really contrary to the spirit of the game. I thought the devs were even banning accounts that team up in solos.

I think they were against people purposely joining solo queues as teams. I imagine that love blooming on the battlefield is something the devs would be all about. That is emergent gameplay at it's finest.

Oh, I was not aware that was the case.

I knew that you could get into trouble for queuing together with a friend in solos and meeting up with each other.

My game tonight was mostly born out of not wanting him to die immediately as the game started since that always sucks and then kind of grew organically from there.

We definitely had a couple of times where we pulled it out due to one of us popping out that wasn't expected. I'll steer clear of doing in the future if that is the case.

That's gotten me thinking about a game type where everyone cues solo and gets matched with a partner during startup, only there's no indication of who your partner is. So everyone drops with nothing but their partner's handle and maybe if they have a male or female character model. Make radios a lootable item that can be heard even on the ground or in someone else's inventory, and maybe PA systems in certain cities.

I'd probably adjust how much time there is between circle contractions to be a bit longer for this. And maybe no down but not out mechanic.

I know that the dev's comments recently have been about speeding up the action but I'd actually like to see a mode that slows the action down too. Either by slowing the circles or removing them completely.

An endurance style match where there's only a loose understanding of where players are would be great.

I also LOVE the idea of radios for long ranch comms.

I do think soloq needs the 3rd and 4th circles to be faster. It's like four or five minutes of camping a building if you're playing smart, and that's kinda lame.

The incentive would be winning. Maybe after the herd is 50% culled there could be loose indicators of groups of people.

The only way this mode might be fun is if there were multiple planes dropping in new players and the aim wasn't to be the last man standing but instead last the longest/have the most kills before you died. Increase drop crate rates, and new players start off with a P1911 and 30 shots so they aren't completely screwed. Have weapons/ammo respawn in places when there are no players within X meters from it, ect. I'd decrease the money made or disable it completely but it would be interesting of a mode.

But by moving and going after other people in their fortified positions you're increasing your chances of losing more than your chances of winning, since you'll be fighting from a largely worse position. Unless by endurance-style you mean rewarding people who can avoid getting bored long enough to outlast the other players' patience and mow them down as they move to avoid an indefinite stalemate.

I do kinda get where you're trying to go with this, but I think in practice it'd shake out to be boring and unrewarding. Playing safe is just too good.

I hope when the game comes out and is open sourced, someone makes a Mass Action Army game, where you get squads of people who are part of a larger army and there are objective points on the map people must hold, destroy, arm, ect. with a final base that must be taken down. I think that would be fun as hell.

  • SatanIsMyMotorSatanIsMyMotor Fuck Warren Ellis Registered User regular
How about a bounty mode? You parachute onto the island with a bounty for a single player. You get an indication on the map for a 100 yard area in which your bounty is. If you kill the bounty you get their bounties also.

Absolutely, that'd be cool. The main thing a game on a map this big needs is motivation to go somewhere else and force fights, and there's lots of ways you could come up with to do that.

That would be flipping awesome, even with more then one flag (spawn randomly around at map, update location on map every minute or so. pick em up like items). Reminds me of some of the weirder CTF variants I played on games like Infantry or Subspace(Now continuum)

I like what Sacriel does with his hacked (in the creative sense, not the pejorative) game modes. Sac Hawk Down, where the Delta Force "shirts" team is smaller and allowed to carry ARs, and has to defend a point from the "skins" who are only allowed SMGs and shotguns. And the inverse of that, where the shirts team is on offense.

I hope that custom game tools become more robust to support creative game modes like those, and perhaps VIP escort, package retrieval (grab the pan!), etc.

Not should there be; you pulled and tossed the pin, lol.

Sacriel always bitches when he fires a sniper rifle then instantly switches to an AR without letting the bolt action animation play. Then when he switches back to the rifle, he has to cycle the bolt before he can fire the weapon again.

I just sat under the stairs waiting for a solid four minutes.

    Sitting, waiting.

Dude comes by, I hear him poking around the building to the left of me.

He pops out, spins instantly to my position and pops two in my head, despite me unloading a full mess of buckshot into his.

    I die.

There's no way he heard me there, he just kinda knew I'd be there. I mean, maybe it was an excellent guess, but still.

I'm kinda sick of this game in singleplayer. All it takes is an instant of bad luck, and it doesn't matter what skill you do or don't have. At least in squads or duos, you can mitigate that bad luck with good teamwork.
