The map design favors snipers so fucking much it makes me hate this game. Seriously, who designs several maps that allow sniper teams to be able to reach static spawn positions? Oi.

What maps has that happened on?

    To put it mildly, yes.

And @Preacher this has now caught the interest of US Lawmakers it seems. So it might turn into a much larger problem for the industry as a whole.

All because EA made a bunch of Star Wars fans mad.

I'd say it's more all because EA knew no limits to their greed and decided, of all things, to exercise it on a very popular franchise that should lead to a guaranteed profitable game. Instead, the game doesn't even come close to selling out while others are completely out of stock

I mean, over 4,000 hours of playtime or over 2,100 $ investment to unlock everything in the BASE GAME? This remindes me of Mass Effect: Andromeda that featured more grind to unlock everything than Mass Effect 3 with all of its DLCs combined, and then they released a patch that almost DOUBLED the grind. Difference is, it wasn't nearly as popular a franchise, at least not the multiplayer portion of it.

France and Australia have now begun investigations.

    This is getting so spicy.

And you will take big risks to force those situations to come up.

I don't like how that article refers to gaming before dlc and micro transactions as the dark ages of gaming.

From a business standpoint, which I presume is something that Forbes focuses on, they probably do see the whole $60 dollar game with no microtransactions as a throwback.

The first phase of Hoth, Kashyyyk, and Starkiller Base are sniper paradises. Also the second phase of Kamino.

That being said, less than a third of the map phases are sniper friendly or paradise. Most are hard to difficult to snipe on and about a third are actively hostile to snipers.

Oh, I can definitely see that. Those are some rough ones to get out of. I loving sniping on Hoth as either faction though and Kashyyyk is fun for my personal vendetta against those slow moving starships that shoot those green lasers.

Servers have had lag issues since their "performance update" a week or so back.

The population might have something to do with it, though, as it seems fairly high on Xbox at least.

Im having fun with the game. I think I'm over 50 hours now and I'm not even close to bored. I stopped spending credits on crates and am instead focusing on milestones, unlocking guns, and saving up for all the heroes. Finished up almost all the trooper milestones. Ive got quite a few of the cards from crates just from that.

Map balance is generally ok. I've seen both sides be successful on every map so far. Obviously some maps are easier for one side, but players are starting to figure out tactics that even the odds. I used to be annoyed at Heroes in GA, but I've come around on them. Heroes solve the issues with choke points and give some pretty big swing potential for losing teams to make otherwise impossible pushes or last minute defensive stands.

This is a great game that hopefully gets the loot crate issue solved soon so it can grow and be successful.

Had a round on Hoth last night where we had one of the 2 AT-ATs down to about 10% health, or less. Total for the two was 42%. Would have been nice to finally destroy one, but the reduction in reinforcements for the Empire made it pretty easy to hold the base and win on phase 2.

Put some time into this over the weekend, I think I have 3 missions left in the SP campaign, and put a few hours into MP with friends.

Thus far, I can agree with a lot that has been said over these pages to date. It's very fun, very Star Wars, the team that made it should be proud. The people involved in the progression system should be ashamed, and while the credits are flowing fairly swiftly now (because of those bonuses unlocking steadily), I can easily foresee a near future point where I'm on matches only, and that being a slow drip of credits/crates indeed.

Getting murdered by dudes with triple three-dot cards is a bit frustrating, but offset by the knowledge that I am bad at this game. PC skills to controller skills are taking a little time to translate. Fucking shoulder buttons. >.<

Definitely getting better as I learn some of the maps, but starting up a week behind (more, accounting for early unlocks and beta time and whatnot) is going to take a bit of work to overcome.

Gorgeous game, glad I'm getting to play it with friends, cautiously optimistic that progression will get somewhat unfucked, but not naive enough to think that they won't be returning some pay2win element (or 'pay2advantage' if we want to be pedantic) eventually.

First they came for the Muslims, and we said NOT TODAY, MOTHERFUCKER!

Your snowspeeders should have taken it out at that point. AT-ATs can be tow cabled down by snowspeeders once they are below something like 30-50% health. Its harder to do than the first game, and I've honestly never seen anyone be successful, but I have seen speeders attempt it.

Wait there's a Hoth AT-AT map? Is this a specific mode/platform exclusive or something? I don't think I've actually played that map.

Edit: Dang I think I just really have never seen it after like 60 hours of play time... that's just silly.

Do you play Galactic Assault? Its possible to have never seen it due to the way the servers work with their static map rotation:
    dmnyfdsgde001.jpg

It looks like Hoth is the first map on the rotation, so you've just gotta stay after Naboo and its likely you'll get Hoth. Team balancing could also prevent you from seeing Hoth since you can get moved to a different server if the game decides it can't balance the team, but that happens much less often from what I've seen.

I generally never quit out of games, which means I stay on the same server for a long time and it keeps my map variety pretty good. I think I've seen each of the maps probably an equal amount of time.

Man this weekend I had a tough time with this game. The rubber banding started around Friday and just seemed to get progressively worse through the weekend to the point that I couldn’t play anything multiplayer yesterday. I got some arcade challenges done though.

I am still liking the game but I am very ready for the team to announce their proposed progression changes.

And on the maps, I’ve def played more star fighter but on ga I have played Tatooine, kashyyk, and kamino, and takodana tons of times and have not even seen some of those maps yet. No hoth, no deathstar, no Naboo (that’s ok after the alpha/beta tho).

Alright so I tried the game out at a friends house and it is still hella fun. Thinking I might pick this up tomorrow.

Any updates on the MTX? I clicked on the "buy crystals" option out of curiosity and it loaded a blank unfinished screen. Seems like they didn't have much of a plan in place.

They haven't said a word about it since (though we did just come out of a holiday). Last communication was just about them investigating the lag/connection issues.

Lag seemed to be worse in some modes than others. Starfighter was bad at times and always the most noticeable, so I stayed away all weekend. The Hero mode and Blast had almost zero issues the entire weekend for me. Galactic could be bad at peak hours, but was fine late evening or later.

They really do need a defensive push class, especially for places like Camino and Endor where you need to hold button to cap things and don't have a lot of great defense options.

Stayed away from this game until Thanksgiving, even tho I had a digital pre-order. It was a minor thing but they didn't let the pre-order plebs (of the base game) start three days early lol. Between that and the whole microtransaction thing, i was just not in the mood for trying out this game.

Have to say after playing the past four days off and on, I like it. Story is a decent SW typical (altho i still have two or three missions left). The milestones are basically exactly what I loved from the Hutt Contracts in SWBF1. I really enjoy that style of rewarding gameplay (and encouraging learning to play different classes/gear as you unlock them).

Basically agree with most of everything people have already posted here. Up to over 30k credits and i just don't want to spend them until they fix progression. Game would be almost perfect if they hadn't designed around loot boxes. I almost feel giving you a tenth of your earned credits in crafting parts per match would be enough, but idk.

It really is a great game. I dislike that you don't have initially a lot of options within a set class, but with four base classes I believe that's twice the number of guns you got to start out in MP with than the first game. But of course two matches and you probably unlocked a third already, plus a number of cards. Progression could still kill this game, despite how fun it is.

You can't kill what has never been alive. It seems like this game is dead out of the gate, unless they make some major changes to the progression, even the people that are around now aren't going to be for long. The publicity killed any hype for the game (not saying it didn't deserve it).

    nah

Population is high enough and there are about to be a bunch of TLJ related events that will keep the current population around. New maps, story mission, heros, weekend missions and events all through December.

All they need to do is announce their microtransaction plans and this game will blow up.

    PreacherKetarElvenshaeMagicalGoats
  • BoogdudBoogdud Registered User regular
Do you really think the population is high? I'm on pc and maybe the numbers aren't as high there, but I was seeing repeat players in matchmaking and laggy, rubber-banding games. Which just means the matchmaking is struggling to find regional matchups (ie. lower population). It's going to take a lot more than microtransaction plans and maps to get over the stigma. I just don't see it happening at this point. Right now they have the star wars die hard fans (ie. us) and I don't see them picking up the casually interested people unless maybe they start slashing the price of the game, but I don't see that happening.

EA doesn't seem to be able to respond quickly enough to re-balance the progression system. It's pretty obvious how dependent the system was on paid transactions and how unwilling they were to let go of it. I think if they had responded on launch by not only killing the microtransactions but also majorly lowering the cost of crates and increasing the compensation for dupes, and increasing the drop rates of 'good' items in the crates, we probably wouldn't even be having this discussion. But alas..

  • ObiFettObiFett Use the Force As You WishRegistered User regular
The rubberbanding has nothing to do with the current population. It's a server issue that they are aware of. During Early Access there weren't any lag issues and that was the lowest the pop has ever been.

I think the stigma can be beat as soon as they announce their loot crate plans. As long as it's not anti-consumer, of course.

This is a great game that hopefully gets the loot crate issue solved soon so it can grow and be successful.

I've adopted the same strategy: saving money to unlock heroes and working on unlocking guns. I still don't know how they can possibly save the progression system (can they even bring back buy-to-win at all after the outcry? If not, how do they hit people up for more money here on out, and what does that do to the piss-poor lootbox acquisition rate). So, while I hope they change the progression system out of a fear of god and the rampaging masses, I'm not confident they will.

that said, I agree the game is a blast and I'm still not bored with it. Unlocking some guns has helped, but I've gone from maybe getting 1 or 2 kills a match to middle-of-the pack scores and occasionally top score (on objective points, never elims though). It actually is a fun game to play, although unlocking the guns seems a little more tedious than it needs to be, especially when everyone else is ahead of you in unlocking better guns. I just wish it wasn't tied to this aggravating misery of a progression system.

Remember when you payed a set amount for a star wars game and it was just unequivocally good, without qualification?

Adding: Oh, I got a tow cable kill on an AT-AT to win a match this weekend. Extremely satisfying.
