Trump fired him because he was heading the Russia investigation.
Comey tripping up over Abedin the other day just gave him some semblance of a cover story that I imagine he'd been waiting for.
The Sessions letter doesn't make any mention of that though. I mean I guess it's cover but it remains to be seen if they will actually use it or stick to their "but his emails investigation!" justification.
So, uh, I mean. That letter makes complete sense to me actually...

Does anybody have the full quote from Comey regarding the email forwarding nonsense? That Propublica piece breaks it up in a very suspicious way, and I want to see how much of Graham's phrasing of it is due to what Comey actually said.
Like, did he originally say Huma forwarded thousands of emails containing classified info to Weiner, or that she forwarded thousands, of which some etc. etc.
Also the reasoning given for his firing does not bode well at all.

Father and company are jubilant about this. They want Giuliani as the new director.

Comey: "Trump's campaign/team is under investigation."
Senate: "Hey FCC, give us Trump docs and such."
Trump: "Everyone agrees I am so incredibly not under investigation."
Mental issues. Not meant as a pejorative. This is a problem.
The sheer audacity of that AG letter in trying to claim this decision is in response to non-partisan criticism of Comey, rather than its real intention, is maddening in every sense of the word.
So, uh, I mean. That letter makes complete sense to me actually...
It's audacious because the right spent a very long time crowing about how it was PROOF of malfeasance. It's absolutely a valid reason to fire him. But they've been celebrating all of those right up until they decided that he was in their way.
Tuesday’s letter said “most of the emails found on Mr. Weiner’s laptop computer related to the Clinton investigation occurred as a result of a backup of personal electronic devices, with a small number a result of manual forwarding by Ms. Abedin to Mr. Weiner.’’
The letter also corrected the impression Mr. Comey’s testimony had left with some listeners that 12 classified emails were among those forwarded by Abedin to Weiner.
“Investigators identified approximately 49,000 emails which were potentially relevant to the investigation,” the letter said. “All were reviewed with a particular focus on those containing classified information. Investigators ultimately determined that two e-mail chains containing classified information were manually forwarded to Mr. Weiner’s account.’’
Ten other emails chains that contained classified information were found on the laptop as a result of backup activity.
A trap is for fish: when you've got the fish, you can forget the trap. A snare is for rabbits: when you've got the rabbit, you can forget the snare. Words are for meaning: when you've got the meaning, you can forget the words.
So sessions recuses himself from the Russia investigation, then recommends the firing of the man investigating Russia connections?
That seems bad.
I don't think the recusal amounted to much in practice.

They will go after Clinton and Rice. The western world, excluding Hungary, Poland, and such, will say in no uncertain terms that this means the administration is breaching all modern standards of a modern democracy, condemn the acts, and someplace like Iceland will offer the new FBI director's targets sanctuary.
Good. Fuck Comey. And obviously this is a cover up, which kind of makes it hilarious.
The idea that your vote is a moral statement about you or who you vote for is some backwards ass libertarian nonsense. Your vote is about society. Vote to protect the vulnerable.

Time for a special/independent prosecutor
I've been skeptical of the problems and issues with potential russian ties prior to this. It all seemed incredibly partisan and no different from Clinton taking money from and being influenced by countries in the Middle East
But this is ridiculous. Trump is smart enough to understand how badly this would look and in turn make him look incredibly guilty. His camp must have determined that no matter how bad/guilty this looks, its better than the alternative of what was going to be found. Which means something was going to be found and it was going to be bad to the point of impeachment.
Should we assume that the IC leaks will begin to flow very soon?
I suspect the FBI and CIA are ready to open the floodgates if needs be. Like, if the Executive Branch starts forcing them to stop investigating them through firings and stooge appointments.

The man staged a coup to install an anti-democratic autocrat six months ago and is now fired by the person he installed. That's (darkly) hilarious.

My only surprise is that it took this long. Once that second announcement happened, dude was done. Either Clinton for obvious reasons, or Trump because he needed a convenient excuse to derail an investigation.

I'm still in complete shock. What the fuck does this mean?
My reaction right now is coalescing around "Sessions is weaponizing the DOJ in service of Trump, Trump's corruption, and his oppressive racist ass agenda"
The letter clearly shows they think the AG should decide whether HRC should be charged.
If they actually go there it's going to mean very bad things for this country.
I would say that this already means bad things for the country--firing the head of the secret police for investigating you is straight out of a banana republic. This action was predicted by people with knowledge of how autocratic states rise. Moreover, the administration knows the optics here look awful and are all but an admission of guilt. And they don't care. That should scare the bejesus out of anybody who believes in our representative democracy.
Good. Fuck Comey. And obviously this is a cover up, which kind of makes it hilarious.

Maybe? But I'm not sure how one can fault the man for installing an autocrat while also praising news that further consolidates power around said autocrat.

Oh yeah. Either Comey was telling the truth and there was no investigation, or he was lying and he should be fired anyways. Got him good there, hopefully his 30 pieces of silver will buy hima nice vacation place.

What do you call it when the head of the domestic intelligence agency willingly and falsely leaks information (or leads to it being leaked) to alter the outcome of an election?

I'd be surprised if the new Director doesn't make noises about investigating emails almost immediately.

Brilliant.
Folks keep saying this but it's not quite the right distinction.
There were thousands of Abedin's emails on Weiner's laptop. That is still true.
Where he misspoke is that Abedin was backing up her emails onto Weiner's laptop, she was not forwarding most of them to Weiner.
Which makes a minor difference, yes... But the difference is just how they got there, not whether they were there.
It doesn't really make a difference to Republican attacks on Clinton and Abedin
It doesn't really make a difference to Democratic defenses of Clinton and Abedin
It doesn't change the number of emails that contained classified information that were on the laptop
It doesn't change anything.
That seems bad.

The media will follow Clinton.
No one should have expected otherwise.
I find that far more plausible than the stated reasoning. But that's just a crazy conspiracy theory, right?
Imma let Jared sum up how I feel right now:
edit: but seriously; now we need to demand an independent investigation. This is vulgar.
